WHY DO I WISH TO STUDY ENGLISH LANGUAGE FOR MY A

LEVELS?

Direction- where do I want to go with it?

English in this day and age is such an important necessity because it’s used in every field
we can think of, including fields like medicine, science, telecommunications, etc. English
is the enabler of today’s rapid technological advancements and it binds every field
together. It’s essential to have the ability to read and comprehend the English language as
it could work to my advantage in any career option I try to pursue.
Being spoken by almost 2 billion people it would also enable me to socialize with a
diverse group of people.

Expect- what do I think it gives me?

The English language gives me the confidence I always wanted in my speech and how I
hold myself in front of others. As a child, I was not very confident in my ability to
communicate or how I understood certain things differently. But when I started studying
English at paradise school goa, it made me realize that there is more to it than just some
informal or formal letters. That there is a deeper understanding of everything that I would
read and write. I got to learn that there are several perspectives to English than just the
traditional one that I studied throughout my childhood. As I took more and more interest
in the subject, I kept on practicing my speech and writing through many different
activities and reading novels, etc. As I was studying English, I discovered that language
is what binds the community together and it gives me the chance to understand society
better.
Living in a cosmopolitan world I realized that to move forward in my life whether it be
my career, English will always be a very integral part of my daily life. As I acquired
knowledge of the language it has made me more confident in my ability to communicate
both for personal and formal usage.
I have recently started to read again and it made me realize just how much I missed it in
the first place. Studying the literature side of it would give me another perspective on
how to see and understand things in a deeper and dramatic manner. Since I am planning
to do arts in my A-levels I figured it would complement each other.
English also plays a large role in fine arts as the course requires me to understand,
express, and articulate my feelings through my artistic expression.

Ability- what do I have to bring to this study?

I think I am a sensitive person with an appropriate amount of emotional understanding. I

tried to read a classic called ‘Wuthering Heights’, a few pages I realized that this book
requires a much higher understanding of the literary language that I have yet to learn. I
feel that English literature can really refine the way I express myself and my vocabulary.
I feel that my understanding of looking at things in a more meaningful way would
contribute to the study as literature is all about reading between the lines.
I believe I have an artistic perception of the world and of the literary works that I have
read and I surmise that it does help me gain the ability to understand the meaning that the
author wanted to express
Furthermore, having achieved a satisfactory grade it made me ponder how useful English
would be to me as an individual and a professional. Henceforth it made me wonder what
other abilities I may have that may benefit my future in the field.

Responsibility – what would I do to excel​?

I will have to responsibly take out time for the subject to get my desired grade. I know
that this level of English requires a lot of reading, listening, writing, and an extensive
understanding of the content. I am willing to put my heart and soul into the understanding
of the vast spheres of the subject. I glanced at the syllabus we are required to do and I am
very excited and intrigued by the various concepts I am about to explore.
Being a goal-oriented individual, I trust that I can succeed in this subject while
maintaining an interest in the language.
I will put all my energy and focus during class hours to receive the optimal benefit of the
subject from the class and the teacher.

To conclude my thoughts, English is a perfect fit for the field that I desire to get into.
And to help better myself as an individual and a contributor to today’s society.
