AS English

Hello Learner !

As discussed today, make a schedule for the weeks of 1st July to 20th Aug to Read,
Watch, and Write. The material I suggest here is based on your current level of
engagement with the language and such activity. Give yourself 1week max for a
book, 1 day for a short story/essay, Watch just 1 movie in a week. You may choose to
do any 2-3 of these in the same week.
 You may have seen the movie or read the book before, however do so again
as an English assignment, with attention to the expected essay writing.
 Give yourself enough time to write your essay drafts and then finalise the
submission.
You have 5 written pieces: 2 based on the movies, 2 based on the books, and 1 based
on the short story.

Watch Movie : (any 2)

You’ve Got Mail
Help
Red Joan
Shadows in the Sun

Read: (any 2)
Sophie’s World (Jostein Gaarder)
Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen) or Rebecca (Daphne du Maurier)
The Notebook (Nicholas Spark)
Chocolat (Joanne Harris)

Short story / Essay: (atleast 2)

O Henry
Virginia Woolff
Arundhati Roy
William Dalrymple

1. Based on each Movie you watch:

Write an essay – 750-900 words. Structure it as:
- Opening paragraph, that could include the day/date you saw the movie, the
name of the movie, names of the main actors, the geographical setting of the
movie, the particular social or cultural setting of the story
- Write the central idea / theme of the movie (do not write the story!)
- Is this theme relevant today, how, why? Or what was your take-away that’s
relevant to today
- Is there a part in the story that you would change? Write the change.
- Close/conclude the essay

2. Based on each book you read:

Write an essay – 750-900 words. Structure it as:
- Opening paragraph, that could include name of the book, author, how you
obtained this book, hard book / e-book, days you took to complete the book
- The central idea / theme of the book (do not write the story!)
- Choose one character you like the best
- Describe: Write What, and Why you like this character (incl physical
description, behavior/mannerisms, role in the story itself)
- Narrate: Write about a particular event/action where your liking this character
comes out best
- Close/conclude the essay

If you have given up on a book, then:

- How many pages had you completed
- What was your ‘feel’ about the pages read
- Why did you not want to complete the book
- What ‘alternative’ have you read, why did you chose this one – and then
write the essay on this book that you have completed.

3. Based on any 1 of the short story/essay you read:

Write in 350-400 words how you would ‘end’ the story. So think of an
‘alternate ending of the story’ and write it as a ‘continuation from a certain
point in the last parts of story – so indicate where your ‘insert’ would be.
Structure your essay as:
- Name of the Story, author, your source for read (book, ebook, ‘net pdf, etc)
- The paragraph/4-5 sentences of the original story from where your ‘insert’
begins (indicate the original by writing it in brackets)
- Your insert of alternate ending.

Submission format:
o All essays are handwritten – neat, legible, with attention to structure and
language
o Write on ruled sheets of paper, punch and file as a folder (do not staple)
o Folder of your choice (plastic, card paper, transparent, decorated, etc)
o Write your name, Title of the work, date of the work – on each submission,
and your Name on the Folder cover
o Submit Folder before 25 Aug 2020 (send it over to School)
