AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEM — ADJUSTMENT / TEST

1. ATC — Functional Test / Inspection
A. Note
This procedure allows for recertification of an ATC while installed on aircraft.
This procedure meets requirements of Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) 91.413 and Part 43
Appendix F.
This procedure is made up of two tests as follows:
• Auto test
• Single test
Auto test procedure can be used for certification of transponder only when performed by a certified
repair station properly equipped to perform transponder certification.
Single test procedure is used for certification of transponder only when the following applies:
• Performed by a certified repair station properly equipped to perform transponder certification
• Any portion of the auto test fails or more information is needed

(d) Apply electrical power to aircraft. See External Electrical Power Application, 20-20-10,
Maintenance Practices.
(e) Ensure there is 50 knots of airspeed on aircraft or weight is off wheels.
NOTE: This can be accomplished via pitot / static test set, weight is off wheels or the
combined WOW circuit breaker is pulled. Some test sets, such as the IFR
6000, may require that the aircraft be in the air or simulated in the air for initial
interrogations.
(f) If auto test being accomplished, comply with the following:
CAUTION: FAILURE TO INSTALL UPPER AND LOWER ANTENNA SHIELDS, WITH
PITOT STATIC TEST SET ATTACHED, MAY CAUSE FALSE TCAS
TARGETS ON OPERATING AIRCRAFT IN VICINITY.
NOTE: Transponder antenna shields are not necessary when performing auto test
using IFR 6000 test set.
1 Ensure transponder not being tested is off.
2 Set up test set for testing ATC systems.
NOTE: Do not use emergency codes 7700, 7770 and 7600 for normal or test
operations.
Do not use codes 0000 or 3000 under any conditions.
It is recommended that local tower be notified when testing ATC system
outside hangar.
(g) Set up IFR 6000 test set to test transponders as follows:
1 Press SETUP key to enter setup menu.
2 Position antenna from aircraft as determined by using IFR 6000 antenna setup
chart.
3 Record height and range of unit under test antenna (in feet) from test set
antenna.
NOTE: On test set, use keys as follows:
• Use SELECT keys to change items (cursor line indicates item
selected)
• Use SLEW keys to change values
4 Record gains (printed on test antenna) and losses (printed on test cable) using
SELECT and SLEW keys.
NOTE: Display indicates ERROR if recorded distances are not in accordance
with antenna position chart.
5 Select antenna to be tested using SLEW keys.
6 Press any key to exit setup menu.

• 1.C.(1) Transponder Test - Auto Test Using IFR 6000 Test Set
• 1.C.(2) Transponder Test - Single Test Using IFR 6000 Test Set
Transponders will not report Mode A or Mode C unless there is 50 knots of airspeed on
aircraft via pitot / static test set, weight is off wheels or the combined WOW circuit
breaker is pulled. Some test sets, such as the IFR 6000 may require that the aircraft be
in the air or simulated in the air for initial interrogations.
CAUTION: KEEP TRANSPONDER ON TIME TO A MINIMUM.
(1) Transponder Test - Auto Test Using IFR 6000 Test Set
(a) On Multifunction Control Display Unit (MCDU), perform the following:
1 On ATC page, select system to be tested.
2 On RADIO page 1, set Transponder Code to 1200 or other desired code.

mounted antenna to pass due to hangar reflections.
Auto test will run until all single and power tests are completed.
During auto test, pressing RUN / STOP key at any time will interrupt test
and can not be restarted where test was interrupted.
During auto test, no reply to UF 16, UF 20 and / or UF 21 does not
constitute a failure.
3 Ensure TEST RUNNING is displayed in bottom line of display.
4 In upper right of display, the following will be displayed at completion of auto test:
