MODULE 1-PRELIM
LESSON #9: Influence Line-Girder

 In this lesson you will be able to draw influence line for a statically determinate structure, also to
determine the maximum live shear and moment in a member.

All concepts sample problems and figures are from the followings books,

 Hibbeler, R. C.(2017). Structural analysis 9th ed. Boston, Pearson

 Leet, Kenneth M. (2011). Fundamentals of structural analysis, McGraw-Hill, Boston

 Kassimali, Aslam (2010). Structural analysis, Cengage Learning, Stamford, CT USA

 J Rungamornrat (2011). Fundamental of Structural Analysis, Rungamornrat, Bangkok Thailand

Girders

• Are the main horizontal supports of a structure, and support smaller beams.

• All girders are beams, but not all beams are girders.

• Unlike beam, the analysis of Girder influence line is by panel.

LESSON 9: INFLUENCE LINE - GIRDER
MODULE 1-PRELIM

Problem #1: (E.6.13, Structural Analysis,

R.C.Hibbeler, 8th ed.)

Draw the influence line for the Reactions and the

shear in panel CD of the floor girder.

Problem #2: (E.6.14, Structural Analysis,

R.C.Hibbeler, 8th ed.)

Solution: Draw the influence line for the moment at point F

of the floor girder
To draw the Influence of the response function
(Reaction, Shear and Moment). You have to place
the 1 unit load in each panel.

Say, to draw the shear at panel CD.

Solution:

When 1 unit is at D ( x= 12) Analysis, Kenneth Leet, 4th. Ed.)

Draw the influence line for the bending moment on

a vertical section through point B on the girder At
points A and F the connection of the stringers to the
floor beam is equivalent to a pin. At points B and E,
the connections of the stringers to the floor beam
are equivalent to a roller.
