How Plastic Bottles Are Recycled

Plastic bottles are: bales are broken apart by a bale breaker

• separated from other types of plastic is shredded into flakes

containers (glass, metal)
flakes are washed, rinsed, and dried
• sorted by color
flakes are melted and put through extruder
• pressed into bales (around 7,000 bottles
per bale) pellets are formed

The pellets are sold to manufacturers to be used to make fibers2 for carpets and
clothing, nonfood containers, and other products.

for the development o f electric and other types o f cars that may cause lesspollution.
