10 Minutes. Distribute an “Elaborate on Feelings” worksheet. Instruct students to compose sentences for the

do? What made you feel so happy? Do you ever get mad? What makes you mad and how do
you act when you are mad? How do you feel today?

TEACHER INPUT:
Relevance Introduce and show a 9-minute film strip The Way I feel by Janan Cain. Tell students to jot down at
least 4 different feelings or moods that they notice in the film.
MODEL:
Routing I will tell them about experiences in which I felt very happy, very disappointed, very sad or very mad. And
when I did not communicate how I was feeling to my friends or family they were very confused. Share ways I
have learned to handle or deal with my feelings better.

GUIDED PRACTICE:
Retaining / Rehearsing
Divide students into small groups. Have write sentences about four feelings the main character felt in the story and
what caused those feelings. I’ll provid sentence frames e.g.: “The main character felt _____ when _____ because ____.
_____.
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE:
Have students individually complete an “Elaborate on Feelings” worksheet by writing a complete sentence describing
an experience in which they gave felt each of the feelings listed. Have them modify and use a sentence frame based
on the one used in guided practice: i.e. I felt _____ when _____ because_______.

CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING:

Recognizing
Circulate throughout the class to review what the students are writing individually.

ASSESSMENT:
Give the students ten minutes to write about a personal experience when they had a strong emotion (a feeling from the
online story or another chosen from the Feelings Worksheet). What caused it, how long did it last and how did they
handle it?
RESOURCES / MATERIALS:
Internet-accessible white board or computer projector, small sticky note pads for the students to take notes during the
presentation of “The Way I Feel” by Janan Cain, the presentation itself

CLOSURE:
Re-exposure
Recap how it is very normal and natural to experience different feelings in different situations and that it is important to
understand what we are feeling and why so that we can communicate our feelings to our friends and family. It is also
very helpful to know how best to handle our feelings. For example, if we are upset or mad about something, it is better
to get some exercise and avoid creating even more trouble or problems!
