H E COVERSHEET
(To be completed by HE students, including Higher Nationals)
I understand that the piece of work submitted will be considered as the final and complete version of my
assignment of which I am the sole author. I have accurately stated the word count. I understand both the
meaning and consequences of plagiarism and that my work has been appropriately attributed unless
otherwise stated. I have not knowingly allowed another to copy my work.
This Coversheet must be attached as the front page of your submission and should be handed in to the
Support Office by the published deadline (failure to meet the deadline, for some assignments, may result in a
mark penalty or a fail).
* The mark or grade shown has not yet been ratified by a University Examination Board. Boards usually sit in
July and September. The mark has been moderated according to Colchester Institute Quality Procedures.
ASSIGNMENT FEEDBACK (minimum specification) – to be completed by the marker
Course teams may use modified versions of this form, assessment grids or other documentation for
feedback provided that, as a minimum, there are clear statements indicating achievement (or not) of
the intended learning outcomes and assessment criteria, giving positive aspects of the assignment,
standard of written English and aspects for improvement.
This assessment has been designed to allow you to demonstrate your understanding of a range
of issues related to health, safety and welfare in the construction industry.
To enable you to complete this assessment you will need to research extensively the main
health, safety and welfare legislation related to a construction project, together with the
mechanisms for non-compliance, and be able to demonstrate through correct interpretation their
application to the industry.
It is expected your report will show that you can organise and manage health and safety in the
workplace, and understand the implications of non compliance.
Students are required to complete the assessment individually. The assessment contains the
following tasks related to the construction industry:
1) Outline, with an example of each, the differences between health and safety regulations
and HSE Approved Codes of Practice.
(20 marks)
2) Identify the typical content of an organisation’s health and safety policy. Why might the
implementation of health and safety standards within an organisation fall below the
standards prescribed by their health and safety policy?
(20 marks)
3) Describe the mechanisms in place for non-compliance with the major pieces of Health,
Safety and Welfare legislation that are relevant to the construction industry.
(20 marks)

will be constructed from an in-situ reinforced concrete structural frame and the 4 unit
factory area using a structural steel portal frame. Establish how specific construction
operations are to be managed and controlled through the application of relevant health,
safety and welfare legislation.
(40 marks)
