Prayer and the Trinity

The Memorial Church of St.
Luke, the Beloved Physician ur tradition teaches us that God is a personal God. In fact, from our
150 Years of Ministry
1861-2011

O Christian tradition we know that God is three persons—the Holy
Trinity; three persons but one God. We may well wonder what
exactly that means, but that is a topic for another article. Suffice it to say
Philadelphia, PA 19115 that “God” is a term similar to the term “human.” If you are in a room with
215.969.3645 (office) three other human beings, there are four persons—including you—in the
stlukesbustleton@yahoo.com room but only one human nature.
www.stlukesbustleton.webs.com The Israelites knew that God was a person because they knew that God
intervened in their lives and history in a number of ways. Most importantly,
SERVICES God chose them as God’s people; freed them from slavery and oppression
Sundays: in Egypt; led them through the wilderness; gave them the Law through
10:30 a.m. Holy Eucharist Moses; by means of which they were able to live together; and led them
with music into the land promised to their ancestor Abraham. In fact, God even
Followed immediately by revealed God’s name to them—YHWH—which was probably pronounced

This is significant because by sharing the Name with them, God was calling
Wednesdays: the Israelites into relationship. Think about what you do when you meet
7:30 p.m. Healing Eucharist someone for the first time. You share your name, right? That is a way of
sharing something of importance with the other person. From that point on,
ACTIVITIES you and that person have a relationship. You can now call upon each other
by name. And so, too, could the Israelites call upon God by name.
Adult Forum- book Over time, however, the Israelites became scrupulous about the use of
discussion: Your Faith, God’s name. They were so worried that they might speak God’s name in
Your Life: An Invitation to vain that they stopped even pronouncing God’s name, and whenever the
the Episcopal Church name appeared in writing, they would say instead “Adonai,” which means
Mondays-7:00p.m. “Lord.” Thus whenever you see the word, “Lord” in scripture, it is
generally the translation for God’s name.
Contemplative Prayer Jesus followed a similar practice, but Jesus introduced a different
Wednesdays – 6:45 p.m. relationship between God and humanity. For Jesus, God is Abba, which is a
in the church office diminutive version of Father—something like “Daddy.” So in this respect
Jesus’ relationship with God was like the relationship between a loving
Inside this issue: parent and child. God was not the more formal “Lord” but the “Daddy.”
And Jesus urged us to speak to God in a similar w saying to his followers

He is also known as the Word of God because he is the Word of God that was spoken in creation when God said “Let
there be…” So Jesus is the human manifestation of the Second Person of the Trinity, which is the Word of God.
Another way of thinking of this is that through speaking, through the word, we come to understand things. And so we
understand God the Father through the Word, Jesus the Christ, who is the human face of God. And because he
assumed a human form, he is one of us—our brother if you will.
Our tradition also teaches that God is known to us as and through the Holy Spirit. Like the Second Person of the
Trinity, the Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Holy Trinity was also with God from the beginning. This is the Spirit
that swept over the face of the waters at the time of creation. And this is also the Spirit that inspired the prophets to
speak God’s truth to the Israelites. It is this Spirit that descended on the Apostles at Pentecost, strengthening them
and enabling them to form the Church. And it is this Spirit that continues to act in the Church and in our hearts so
that we may know the Truth. It is through the indwelling Spirit that we know God and the Christ. It is through the
Spirit that we have our being as well.
So what has all of this to do with prayer? The short answer is that because God is a person, God desires and seeks a
relationship with us. God created us precisely for this reason—that we might know God and share in God’s beauty
and the beauty of God’s created order, of which we are a part. But we are the intelligent part of creation, if you will.
We are that part of creation that is created in God’s image and likeness. And so God seeks a relationship with us, and
we, whether we admit it or even know it or not, desire a relationship with God. It is this that fulfills our life and it is
this for which we were created.
Of course we have a relationship through communing and communicating with God. As we turn to God we are
transformed and find our true Self. And that is what God desires from us. God wants to know us and God wants to be
known by us, which requires presence and conversation. Of course, God is always present to us, but we may not be
present to God. That is why it is so important to take some time each day to spend talking with God.
I say “talking with God” because sometimes we may fall into the habit of talking at God. “God I need this, that and
the other thing. Thanks.” That’s not a conversation and it doesn’t allow us to know God. Similarly, if we do all the
talking, even if it is not a wish list, without listening, we are not really in a conversation either. So what is needed is
some talking perhaps, but most importantly, some listening. It is our listening to God that will transform us in the
end. So while “saying your prayers” is good; don’t suppose that’s an end of the matter. Try listening to God as well.
You might be surprised at what God wishes to say to you. And finally, don’t suppose that you can only speak to God
or listen to God at a prescribed time of the day that you have set aside expressly for that purpose. It is true that we
should have a time designated for praying but it is also true that God is present when we are stuck in traffic or
standing in line at the market or you name it.
So I encourage you to begin getting to know God better through prayer. And if you have questions about how to get
started, ask me; or better yet, ask God. God knows a lot about prayer.

God bless,
Father Tim +

SOUPER BOWL SUDAY IS FEBRUARY 6TH
The History of the Souper Bowl:
A simple prayer: "Lord, even as we enjoy the
Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful
of those who are without a bowl of soup to
eat" is inspiring a youth-led movement to help
hungry and hurting people around the world.

This prayer, delivered by Brad Smith, then a

seminary intern serving at Spring Valley
Presbyterian Church in Columbia, SC, gave
birth to an idea. Why not use Super Bowl
weekend, a time when people come together for
football and fun, to also unify the nation for a
higher good: collecting dollars and canned food
for the needy? Youth could collect donations
at their schools and churches in soup pots,
and then send every dollar DIRECTLY to a
local charity of THEIR choice.

The senior high youth of Spring Valley Presbyterian liked the idea so much they decided to
invite other area churches to join the team. Twenty-two Columbia churches participated that
first year, reporting their results so a total could be determined, and then sending all $5,700
they had raised to area non-profits.

That was 1990. Since then, ordinary young people have generated an extraordinary $70
million for soup kitchens, food banks and other charities in communities across the country.
In addition, hundreds of thousands of youth have experienced for themselves the joy and
satisfaction of giving and serving, inspiring people of all ages to follow their generous
example.

Last year , the Souper Bowl raised $10 million dollars nationwide!
