Background
Peter wrote this letter. He was one of the 12 *apostles. His name was Simon, but Y'shua
changed it to Kefa (John 1:42). ‘Kefa’ means ‘a rock’ or ‘a stone’. A man called Silas
(sometimes the Bible calls him Silvanus) helped Peter to write the letter (see 5:12). In
those days, some men were expert writers. They helped people to write their letters in
the proper way. Peter wrote this letter about 30 years after Y'shua's resurrection.
In the first verse, Peter lists 5 countries. Most of these are in the country that we now call
Turkey. On the day of *Pentecost (Acts 2) people from three of these countries were
visiting the city of Jerusalem. Some of these people may have become Believers in
Y'shua there. Perhaps they went home and started new churches. Peter wrote to Jews
and Gentiles who became followers of Messiah. Peter gave the letter to someone who
travelled to the main churches in these areas. This person read the letter aloud to the
Believers. Then people copied it and sent it to all the smaller churches near to them.
Peter wants to encourage Believers who are suffering for Messiah. Although Believers
might suffer in this life, they will not suffer forever. This world is not their real home. One
day they will live with YHVH and share His glory.
Peter also wants his readers to understand the grace of YHVH. He wants every Believer
to know what YHVH has done for them. He wants them to learn more about YHVH.
This letter is very practical. When a person becomes a Believer in Messiah his life
changes. (‘his’ here refers to both men and women, not just to men.) Peter tells his
readers how to live a good life as a follower of Messiah. Peter was a disciple of Y'shua
for about three years. He saw all that Y'shua did, heard all that He said, and is writing
this letter to encourage Believers to live like Y'shua.
1Pe_1:2 - Sanctified by His Spirit and the Blood - Through the sanctification of the
Spirit - cleansing, to make set apart - to make holy - Just like YHVH sanctified the
Sabbath so He sanctifies us through His Spirit. YHVH "cleansed" the Sabbath from all
defilement and distractions like work or everyday activities, making it set apart for Him
and His glory alone. In the same way YHVH sanctifies us from worldliness, setting us
apart and make us holy for His purpose alone. Sanctification by the Spirit comes
through obedience - that implies action, something you have to do. What do we need
to obey? We should listen to the Spirit of YHVH, reminding us of everything we have
learned Joh_14:26, as well as remind you of the Commandments written on your heart
Jer_31:33-34. Obeying the Spirit of YHVH is to obey His Commandments His Spirit
remind you of in every situation. This is our love towards Him Exo_20:6 Joh_14:15,
Joh_14:21. As we obey His Law in our hearts, so our actions and our lives are
sanctified and cleansed from unrighteousness and we become Holy as He is.
The second part of Sanctification is through the Blood of Messiah - The blood is for the
remission of our sins Mat_26:28, Heb_13:12, Col_1:14, and the forgiveness of our sins.
One part of Sanctification is to be washed by the Blood of the Lamb and the forgiveness
of sin. The other part is to live a set apart life, being sanctified (keep clean) by the Sprit
and obedience to His Commandments.
Through this sanctification of the Sprit and the Blood we receive His Grace and Peace
(Shalom). His Grace is to be sanctified, to be forgiven, to receive His Spirit and to obey
His Commandments (Truth). If you apply this and allow this then you will have a life of
inner peace and Shalom. Shalom means "the completion of the building process".
Y'shua is building a "House" for Himself in ach one of us and together we are His Body
and His Temple which He and His Father indwell Joh_14:23-27.
1Pe_1:3-5 - Are we going to Heaven when we die? - Peter gives praises unto YHVH,
the Father of Y'shua the Messiah. Blessed is the word "baruch" that means 'to kneel
down' and is an expression of exaltation towards YHVH and a sign of humility form the
worshipper. YHVH has made us 'born again' and is the 'offspring' and 'children' of
YHVH. How are we 'Born Again"? By the hope in the One who was resurrected By
YHVH's Spirit. We are 'born again' in the same way YHVH raised Y'shua from the dead -
through the Power of His Spirit Rom_1:4. From this we receive the inheritance of
becoming a undefiled, uncountable or immortal being that will not fade away, guarded in
eternity for you. The translation says "reserved in heaven for you" implying that you will
go to heaven when you die and will live in heaven for eternity with YHVH. This sis
contradicting Revelation that states that the New Jerusalem comes down to earth and
YHVH will live with us on earth forever. "Reserved" can also be more accurately
translated as "guarded" and "heaven" as "eternity". That means that YHVH, Who is
eternal (not bound to time) is guarding our inheritance - which is eternal life in a immortal
undefiled (by sin) state. It does not specify where we will live forever and misinterpreted
as Heaven due to the translation. "Who are kept" better translated as "Guarded" by the
power of Elohim (His Spirit) through faith that leads unto Salvation that will be revealed
(happen) in the last time (days). You are saved only when Y'shua come to judge and He
will come in the Last Days. Your "salvation" or "hope of salvation" is guarded through
YHVH's Spirit (power of Elohim) and your faith (faithfulness in the Truth).
1Pe_1:9 - The END of your faith? Does this imply that your faith will end? Of course
not! It should actually be translated as the GOAL of your faith that is salvation of your
souls. We get the same mistranslation in Rom_10:4 that produced a false doctrine that
Messiah is the END of the Torah/Law. Messiah is the GOAL of the Torah - that means
that He is revealed in the Torah and that the Torah will lead you to Messiah.
