China’s Great Leap Forward Movement

In the article of Rostow he introduces that there are five stages of a society’s economic
development the first development the first was traditional society which was further
explained that it is the most basic form of society The second was pre conditions take
off this stage requires fundamental changes, such as a society’s attitudes towards
science, risk-taking, and profit-making. The Third was the take-off stage which is the
most important stage among all at this stage urbanization and industrialization increase,
rapidly expanding the secondary sectors over the primary sector. The fourth stage is the
period of self growth and lastly the age mass- consumption where in the tertiary sector
becomes a mainstay as leading sectors shift towards durable consumer goods and
services. The country of china established “The Great Leap Forward” thus it was widely
seen as a major economic disaster and many deaths as well as the Great Chinese
Famine from 1958 to 1961 were attributed to it. China after World War II and the
conclusion of its civil war, faced considerable internal problems and remained confined
to Soviet influence. The GLF was unsuccessful due to improper implementation of the
five stages and the GLF was impractical in terms of executing this kind of development.
This leads to many Chinese people to suffer and causing 45 million deaths. The
implementation to their economy’s growth didn’t work out well as to what it should be
done, The GLF was equally unsuccessful in diverting the necessary agricultural income
for stimulating the manufacturing sector as a precondition for take-off. There was little
surplus income generated from the agricultural production due to reckless agricultural
innovations as well as poorly planned and constructed irrigation systems. It was said that
the policy was overly ambitious, while poor governance and planning meant that little
could be done to correct for it. The results were far from it due to massive instability
throughout the country, as well as poor planning and execution. These were tangible
harm cause by the great Leap Forward. Besides, seemingly invisible, the severely
negative impact on china in all aspects lies in the talent gap caused by the 10 year
cultural revolution. During this turbulent decade, students at all levels were deprived of
the right to receive of education.
