MKDungeons FAQ: 1/16/2002

What is Mage Knight Dungeons?

Mage Knight Dungeons is WizKids latest creation. A game that combines the elements that made
Mage Knight Rebellion so popular and fun, with new twists that give the game both a roleplaying and
board-game feel. Dungeons incorporates new concepts such as characters that go up in levels as well as
take damage, treasure chests and traps and ever-changing Dungeon configurations. For more information,
see Mike Mulvihill’s article on the differences between Mage Knight Dungeons and Mage Knight
Rebellion.

What are MK Dungeons Builder’s Kits?

MK Dungeons Builder’s Kits include 6 tiles (which were used to make the maps in the starter
sets), terrain markers, more Wandering Monster Tokens, colored arrows and level markers, and the
Monster Master Token. Use these when playing advanced games. All the rules for these items can be found
in the MK Dungeons rulebook.

Can I use my Mage Knight: Rebellion figures when playing Dungeons?

Yes, you can. Rules for their use can be found in the Mage Knight Dungeons rulebook. Just make
sure you use the Mage Knight Dungeons Special Ability Card when playing MK Dungeons. Many special
abilities have been changed to work differently within the Dungeons context.

What is a Lone Wolf game?

A Lone Wolf game is a Dungeons game played directly out of the box. It is a version of MK
Dungeons designed especially to introduce you to the basic mechanics of game and allow you to play the
game simply and easily—all you need is a friend.

Can I play Lone Wolf at any time, or only out of the Starter Box?
You can play using the Lone Wolf rules any time. It’s simply a faster game. When setting up the
Wandering Monster Tokens, Mage Spawn Pool and treasure chest placement, use the basic rules as if you
were playing out of the box. If you are using tiles, use the rules presented in the Advanced Rules section.

What is a Heroic Team game?

The Heroic Team game is the standard-level game you can play. It allows you to create a team of
Heroes and run them against another team of Heroes. You should play this version of the game once you
have collected figures, tiles, and other components. All the rules for this type of game are in the Advanced
Rules section. Most of our tournaments will be geared toward this kind of game.

Can I use MK Dungeons figures in my MK: Rebellion games?

Yes, you can. The Mage Spawn function the same way as the Mage Spawn in other Mage Knight
products. The Heroes are the their own faction, and follow all the standard faction rules. Make sure that
you use the Mage Knight Rebellion Special Ability Card when playing Rebellion, even for Heroes. Finally,
Heroes can be used at any experience level in MK: Rebellion. Pay the correct point cost for the Heroes
based on their level and make sure you mark them with the correct level token when the game begins, so
all players know the figure’s starting level. Heroes do not gain levels in MK: Rebellion games.

I’m confused by the term “Heroic Team.” I thought all MK: Rebellion figures can be used?
We use the term Heroic Team to represent the team you are playing, regardless of the actual
faction. By definition, a Heroic Team can only have one of any character in it. That’s no problem for
Heroes or other unique figures. When using Rebellion figures, though, you have to decide which ranking
(weak, standard, or tough) of a specific character you wish to use, because you may only use one of each
figure on your team. Limited edition figures, which are variations a sculpture of another figure, are counted
as a unique figure. For example, you could use Podo and a Goblin Volunteer, if you wish.

The same goes for Mage Spawn. Are they the only bad guys?
Again, Mage Spawn is a generic term for the opposition to a Heroic Team. Any available figure
can be tossed into the Mage Spawn Pool. For example, you and your opponent could fill the MS Pool with
Necropolis Sect figures, as if the Heroes were invading the dungeons below a Sect outpost. As long as all
the players agree on the make-up of the pool, anything goes.

Daketh Zhagrim (# 87) has the same point Values at 4th and 5th level. Is this correct?
Yes. Daketh loses Necromancy, but gains a higher Attack Value from 4th level to 5th. So his
character does change. You will need to decide which characteristic is more important when you are
playing. In Mage Knight: Rebellion, you could push him to get Necromancy and sacrifice his better attack.
In the big picture it’s an equal exchange.

Arman Gessep (#72) doesn’t have a Green Square at 5th level? Can he be used in tournaments?
Yes. This was a mistake and will be corrected. Like all Heroes, he can start at any level. It might
be best to mark him starting at fifth level when using him in Mage Knight: Rebellion.

What is an adjacent square?

An adjacent square is any square that touches another square. Imagine the number pad on your phone.
The Number 5 is your Hero. 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, and 9 are all adjacent to your Hero.

What does enhanced front arc mean?

An enhanced front arc is a 180-degree front arc. On the base, the white front-arc marking will
cover half the base rather than just one quarter of it.

How many Wandering Monster Tokens MUST I bring to the game?

This depends on the game you are playing. If you are playing a Lone Wolf game, then you must
bring a number of tokens equal to what is contained in a starter box. For all other variations of the game,
the rulebook describes the number required. Specific tournaments and scenarios may have other
requirements.

How many points of Mage Spawn MUST I bring for the Mage Spawn pool?
This depends on the game you are playing. If you are playing a Lone Wolf game, then you must
bring Mage Spawn equal to what is contained in a Starter box (6 figures at a value per figure of no more
than 40 points). For all other variations of the game, the rulebook describes the number required. Specific
tournaments and scenarios may have other requirements.

When a Wandering Monster Token converts, can the resulting Mage Spawn be used the same turn?
The conversion ends the token’s activation. You may use another activation to activate the Mage
Spawn. In multi-player games, converted Mage Spawn come into play marked with tokens.

If my opponent and I both have Heroes in the same tile as a Mage Spawn or Wandering Monster
Token, who can move that figure?
Neither of you can move the Spawn or token. In this situation, you will probably have more
problems dealing with each other than with the Mage Spawn.

When a trap is triggered, what happens to the chest?

The trap is sprung. Apply the damage to the target(s) or place the Mage Spawn. Collect 25 experience
points. Now the chest may be gathered (and opened) at a cost of 2 speed points. If the Hero does not have
enough speed points to open the treasure chest, it just sits there until someone (and yes, it can be your
opponent) has the 2 speed points required to gather it.

What happens if I get 110 experience points and I only have one Hero? I can’t level one Hero up
more than one level at a time, so do I lose the remaining experience?
You never “lose” experience points. Spend the points this turn to raise the Hero up a level. If at the
beginning of the next turn you still have more than 50 points, then you immediately raise the Hero up
another level.
Can a Hero be healed to a new level?
No. A Hero can only be healed to its current level by the special abilities Healing, Magic Healing,
Regeneration, Vampirism, and the special use of Command. The only way to increase a level is through
experience. Use the Hero level counter to mark your Hero’s current level, so there can be no confusion.

If your Hero is adjacent to more than one enemy figure, must it make a breakaway for EACH enemy
figure? Or does it make a single attempt to break away from 2 or more enemy models?
You only break away from a figure or figures if the Hero is in their front arc. The breakaway
attempt applies to all figures. So if the Hero is in the front arc of two figures, you only make one
breakaway roll. But if the Hero moves into another square and ends up in the front arc of a different figure,
you have to roll again.

Do you retain your Heroic activations after your Hero(s) are eliminated?
Yes. You keep your initial number of activations for the entire game. If all of your Heroes are
eliminated, you can use your activations on Mage Spawn.

If my Hero is eliminated in a Lone Wolf game and has a treasure, where does it go?
Close the chest. DO NOT SPIN THE TREASURE DIAL! Spin the trap back to the blank starting
position. Place the chest in the square the Hero was in when he or she was eliminated. The chest may be
disarmed and gathered as normal.

If a Hero exits the dungeon, is the Hero considered eliminated?

No. A Hero who has exited the dungeon has escaped with his life and with any treasure. Heroes are
only considered eliminated if their stat slots shows all skulls as a result of damage.

When player has 2 Heroes with 4 chests and one of the Heroes leaves the dungeon, what happens to
the treasures?
In this case, two treasure chests are now out of the dungeon and cannot be lost or stolen. The owning
player decides which treasures are safe from his enemies and places them off to the side. He can still apply
the magic items from them to Heroes in the Dungeon.

Is making your counterattack optional?

No. Counterattacks MUST be made if a figure has been attacked (even if the original attack missed). If
a counterattack can be made, it must be made. This rule will be corrected in future editions of the rules.

Does a counterattack have to be made through the front arc?

Counterattacks follow all of the standard rules for attacks; a counterattack must be made through
the front arc. If you want to attack without reprisal, attack a figure outside its front arc.

How many speed points does it cost to make a free spin, and when can I make a free spin?
A free spin can only be made on your turn. It may be made at any time on your turn. Free spinning
on your turn costs no speed points. Whenever a non-friendly figure enters or is placed in a square adjacent
to you, you may spin that figure for free as well, whether it is your turn or not.

How is range measured?

First, you need to determine if there is a clear line of fire. To see if there is a clear line of fire, use
any straight edge or draw an imaginary line from the center of the firer’s square to the center of the target’s
square. Line of fire is blocked and no shot can be made if the imaginary line passes through a square that
contains a figure other than the firer or the target, or if the line of fire crosses blocking terrain, like a wall.

If the firer has a clear line of fire, then count in squares the shortest route to the target using the imaginary
line as a guide. Do not count the square the attacker is standing in for determining range.

If a square is printed with terrain, does the terrain cover the entire square?
Any terrain fills the entire square it occupies. So, if your line of fire clips the edge of a square
containing hindering terrain, you must apply the appropriate modifiers.

Are hindering terrain ranged attack modifiers cumulative for multiple squares of terrain?
No. Regardless of how many terrain squares your line of fire passes through, the target only
receives a single +1 to its defense.

Are walls considered blocking terrain?

Walls are considered blocking terrain for purposes of line of sight.

Does a warrior making a ranged combat attack add +1 to his attack roll if the attack passes through
the target’s rear arc?
Yes. This rule does not apply to Mage Knight: Rebellion or Mage Knight: Unlimited.

Can my Hero disarm a treasure trap if the treasure is not in the front arc of my Hero?
No. The treasure chest must be in the front arc of the Hero and the hero must be in the front arc of
the treasure.

Can you give a Hero a Magic Item from a treasure chest requiring range if the Hero doesn’t have a
ranged attack? Can you give the Hero the bonuses?
If the Hero does not have a ranged attack, he cannot use the Special Ability the item grants him.
The bonus to Speed, Attack or Defense can still be applied to the Hero.

When attacking diagonally, is my line of fire blocked by figures or terrain in the other squares that
share the same corner?
No. Unless the corner is sealed off with a gray wall marking on the tile or if the figures can’t
access it (for example, when using tiles, there may be a chance that a diagonal may be sealed off), you can
attack through the corner. This goes for both close and ranged combat. As a rule of thumb, if a character
can move to a square, he can attack into or through that square.

Can Mage Spawn occupy the same square as a Wandering Monster Token?
No. Figures and tokens may not occupy the same square at any time. Remember, Wandering
Monster Tokens are just unknown Mage Spawn.

When I pass through a figure, do I have to pay 3 speed points PLUS the value of the square occupied
by the figure I’m passing through?
No. When passing through, you only need to pay 3 speed points for the square occupied by the
figure passed.

How many speed points does passing through a figure diagonally cost?
Pay 3 speed points for passing through, 1 for the diagonal movement, and then the cost of the
destination square.

If I control a figure that is passed through, do I have to take my free attack?

If you control a figure that is passed through, you must attack the passing figure through their rear
arc, and they must counterattack you.

Can you use Nimble to make a free spin to counterattack a figure using Sneak Atack?
No, Nimble does not affect free spinning in Dungeons. Make sure you are using the correct
Special Ability Card.

Can I fly through walls?

No. The rules state that you cannot move through blocking terrain, even by using Special
Abilities.
What is a Special Ability Damaging Effect?
A special ability damaging effect is damage caused by any of the following special abilities: Ram, Pole
Arm, and Magic Retaliation. In such cases, the figure inflicts damage without you making an attack roll,
and therefore these attacks are classified as a damaging effect. Special abilities that increase the damage
(such as Venom or Magic Enhancement, or even Weapon Master) are not effects because they all require
an attack roll before they go into effect.

Does Venom add damage to a ranged combat attack? Do you still get to deliver 1 click of damage on
a missed range attack?
Yes and yes.

If my Hero attacks multiple figures because he has multiple range arrows or by using Sweep, does
each of those opposing figures get to counterattack?
Yes. Each figure targeted by the attack gets a separate counterattack if they are able to make one.
Be careful when using your Sweep ability—you can end up taking much more damage than you dish out.

Can a warrior use Sweep in a counterattack?

Yes. You can use the Sweep special ability to counterattack. If you use Sweep, you target all
opposing figures in your front arc. If you do not want to target some figures, turn off that special ability.
The benefit of using Sweep on the counterattack is that the figures do not get to hit you back, because you
are hitting them on a counterattack.

Magic Confusion is not listed as an optional ability. Does that mean I always have to use it?
Magic Confusion is an optional ability. This mistake will be corrected on the next printing of the
SAC.

We were playing a Lone Wolf game and both Heroes died. What does that mean?
It means the dungeon won. The Mage Spawn are eating your Heroes and walking around treasure
chests that are gathering dust. No one will sing the song of your valiant efforts. This unfortunate result can
happen in a Lone Wolf game, which is why most Heroes adventure only in teams. The circumstance of the
dungeon winning will be addressed in tournament rules. At home, set yourself up a new game and try
again. Because the Dungeons game is well balanced, it is possible for both Heroes to die, but it’s more
likely that a Hero will walk out with a treasure chest.

What happens if the Hero uses the vortex special terrain marker to spin the tile 90 degrees and the
tiles no longer match?
The Hero is stuck on that tile unless they spin in the vortex enough times to realign the tile.
