ENDODONTICS

preclinical course
Endodontic instruments

Armamentarium for endodontic therapy

Session outline

 Roentgenography, magnification
 Instruments for chamber and access
preparation
 Basic endodontic instruments –
standardization and using methods (hand
and rotary instruments)
 Equipment for working lenght evaluation
Instruments for obturation of canal system
Roentgenography
 Radiographs are
essential to all phases of
endodontic therapy
 Inform the diagnosis and
the various treatment
phases and help
evaluate the success or
failure of treatment
 High-quality radiographs
 Film holders
Series of radiographs

 During endodontic treatment- minimum 4

radiographs

1. Periapical radiograph ( diagnostic)

2. Radiograph with an instrument ( WL
radiograph)
3. Radiograph with a filling material (MAP)
4. Control radiograph
Periapical radiograph

Anatomy – number of roots, canals

Curvatures
Abnormal conditions in the pulp or periradicular tissues
Caries, fracture, resorption, leaky restoration
Working length radiograph

Instrument in the canal

Rubber dam clamp

Radiograph with a filling material
(cone fitting)

Guttapercha
Control radiograph
Digital radiography

Digital radiography is a type of X-ray that

uses a small sensor instead of the film
used in conventional X-rays. The sensor
transmits the image to a computer
monitor.

 Digital radiography is rapidly replacing

conventional dental X-rays and provides
several benefits.
Digital radiography

Schick System

Digora System

Trophy System
Digital radiography- advantages
TIME( increased speed of obtaining images- available in seconds)
LESS RADIATION EXPOSURE ( up to 90% of the dose)
MAGNIFICATION (images can be usefully magnified 2-10 times)
 CONTRAST, DENSITY
 HIGHLIGHTING, COLORIZATION
 MEASUREMENTS
LESS EQUIPMENT( eradication of film chemicals, developers)
STORAGE, PRINTING ( all films are labelled by name and date,
filed and retrieved easily, copies are the same as originals and
simple to make)
 PATIENT EDUCATION
Digital radiography
Orifice localization
MAGNIFICATION
Loupes and opearting microscope are tremendous
help during RCT and other procedures

 Magnification eliminates errors, inaccuracy and

guesses…
 Microscope offers
Very light illumination in eyesight line
 Several magnification levels
 Allows documentation
 Ergonomic operator’s position
MICROSCOPE

The microscope in
endodontics is particularly
useful for:

 Identifying cracks
 Finding calcified and
additional canals
 Removing posts and broken
instruments
 Repairing perforations
 Performing periapical
surgery
