and some of them really very good. The concept of
the Varga Charts is an exclusive and unique
feature of Vedic Astrology. It is dealt with in the
Shodash Vargadhyay and Varga Vivekaadhyay of
Vrihat Parashar Hora Shastr in details, and
consists of 96 verses in all in the commentary by
Pundit Seeta Ram Jha; but one should not be
surprised if the number of verses devoted to this
topic are either more or less in other
commentaries. A detailed knowledge of the
concept, mechanism, and applications of the Varga
Charts is essential for any body interested in the
study of Vedic Astrology.

It can be said unhesitatingly that it not a subject

which can be explained in brief. It requires at least
a medium sized volume to explain the concept,
dynamics, operation and application of these.
However, I shall try to explain here its concept and
dynamics in brief.

The Concept

The zodiacal circle which is spread over 360º of the

visible skies is divided into 12 zodiacal signs of 30º
00´ 00˝ each. The Varga Charts are based on
further subdivisions of these 12 zodiacal signs.

Incidentally, there is another division of the

zodiacal circle into 27 constellations of 13º 20´ 00˝
each but the divisional charts have no reference to
this division.

Both of these divisions have their specific

applications and the whole frame work of Vedic
Astrology is based on these.

The Mechanism

According to Maharshi Parashar, the zodiacal

circle has 15 types of sub-divisions in addition to
the above mentioned basic division into 12
zodiacal signs, 16 in all, which are called the
kshetra or griha, the Hora, the Dreshkaan etc.
Modern Astrologers call them D-1, D-2, D-3 etc. etc.

These are equal divisions of the zodiacal signs and

extend over arcs of one full sign – 30º (kshetra or
griha), half – 15º 00´ 00˝ (Hora), one third – 10º 00
´ 00˝ (Dreshkaan) and so on and so forth, up to
one sixtieth – 00º 30´ 00˝ (Shastiyansha) of the
zodiacal signs with the exception of the D-30
(Trimshansh) which consists of five in-equal
divisions of the zodiacal signs. In some cases these
divisions follow the zodiacal sequence with out
any interruption as in the case of the D-9 - the
navamaamsha and in some cases they are
interrupted, either within the sign itself as in the
case of the D-03 - the dreshkana or the D-04 – the
chaturthaamsha or at the junction of two signs as
in the case of D-10 – the dashamaamsha; but they
always run in the zodiacal direction with the
exception of the D-30 (Trimshansha).

Some later authorities have mentioned Vargas

other than these 16 also but in absence of any
authentic research or even individual experience
or case studies, it is difficult to say how dependable
they are.

Casting of the Varga Charts

All important books on Vedic Astrology contain

tables showing the distribution and extent of these
sub-divisions over the individual zodiacal signs
and in some, the method of using these tables for
preparing the divisional charts is also explained.
However, I will try to explain the same here also.

In order to cast a particular divisional chart, such

as the D-9 or the D-10, first of all one has to
identify, from the respective table, the arc covered
by that sub-division in which the longitudes of the
ascendant of the foundation chart are located. A
normal chart or format used for drawing a
horoscope, having twelve cells in a cycle, is used
for this purpose also and the name or the number
of the sign, which is assigned to the arc thus
identified according to the distribution of that sub-
division, is noted down in the cell assigned to the
ascendant and the names or the numbers of the
remaining eleven signs follow.

After this the arcs covering the longitudes of the

nine planets are also identified from the tables in a
similar manner and their names are inserted in the
cells bearing the names or the numbers of the
respective signs, as assigned to those arcs in the
respective tables.

Reading a Varga Chart

Verses 42 to 53 in the Shodash Vargadhyaaya and

the entire 43 verses of the chapter Varga
Vivekaadhyaaya explain the method of evaluating
and interpreting different vargas. However, the
commentaries available in the market fail to
explain this part properly.

For example, the most commonly used varga – the

D-9 – is being used as indicating the spouse or the
married life of the native but according to
Maharshi Parashar it indicates only the kalatra-
sukh.

D-9 and the marriage

VPHS Ch. 7 verse 3 says navamamshe kalatraanam

(नवमांशे कलत्राणाम्) – i.e. the navamamsha is about the
kalatras. Kalatra is a Samskrita word meaning ‘the
hips’, and not the marriage or the spouse (जीवनसाथी)
or young women (युवती), as printed in some
astrology soft wares above the D-9 chart. It must,
therefore, be understood clearly that the D-9
reveals information about the pleasures related to
the zone of the body having the hips, that is, the
gratification of the sexual requirements only – at
the concrete as well the abstract level, for both, the
male and the female; it does not necessarily mean
a formal marriage or the spouse except that in all
civilized communities it is presumed that such
gratification, at least at the concrete level follows a
formal / socially acceptable marriage and forms an
important part of such married life and the native’s
relationship with the spouse.

All manifestations in the D-9 chart occurring

before the formal marriage, therefore, may show
either love affairs (at the abstract level) or
licentious activities including live-in-relationships
(at the concrete level) depending on the nature and
the state of the participating determinants and the
kind of their relationships.

Similarly, there is much confusion regarding

interpretation of the other varga charts also.

Use of Varga Charts for making predictions

Unfortunately, not a single book, whether ancient

or contemporary, explains the use of varga charts
in making predictions. This, in itself is a topic
which requires a lot of explaining and therefore, in
stead of doing it here, I refer the readers to the site
www.saptarishisastrology, Articles - volume-X -
serial no. 99 – under the caption ‘New dimensions
in Vimshottari Dasha System’ where the method
for its use in making predictions has been
explained with a number of examples.

Besides, I have also explained the use of varga

charts in making predictions with the help of
numerous examples in the part IV and V of my
book on Kaala Chakra Dasha System, published by
Sagar Publications, New Delhi and I hope this will
help you, Mr. Santosh, as also the other readers, in
using the varga charts meaningfully and
successfully in making correct predictions on its
basis.

What are divisional charts?

Divisional charts are very important tools to find

out the actual functioning & deliverance of any
particular planet during its dasa periods. Most of
the Astrologers (or) those who has good knowledge
& interest in Astrology will focus their mind
heavily on D-1 chart (Lagna Kundali). Few of them
show interest in D-9 chart and also few other
charts. But the predictions that are done on the
basis of D-1 chart may not come true always.
Sometimes the natives will suffer during the
interim periods of good dasa periods. Let us find it
out with few examples.

For example: The Venus is considered as the

highly beneficial planet for Makara Lagna. If the
Venus is going to be placed in its own house, the
5th house (Taurus - Rishaba Rasi) then its
considered to be highly lucky and the Venus
Mahadasa period would be considered to be
golden period in the life of natives. The Venus is
considered as the “Raja Yoga Graha”.

Most of the astrologers predict the Venus

Mahadasa period would deliver the wonderful
results in the native’s life, once they see the 5th
house lord getting placed in the benefice 5th house
in the D-1 chart.

Suppose, if the expected Raja Yoga doesn’t happen

in the native’s life (or) if the native suffer various
troubles in their life during the predicted Venus
dasa periods, then they will put the blame on Rahu
(or) Ketu; (or) they would blame it on Shani transits
periods. [1]

Wonders of Varga Charts 1: Why the predictions

are going wrong? Even if all the parameters
looks fine in the D-1 chart, then why it is not
happening?

I shall explain with certain examples.

Smt. Indira Gandhi was assassinated during the

time, when she was in the zenith of power.

Smt. Indira Gandhi should be able to climb up

to the top level position in her career during the
particular Mahadasa. The same Mahadasa
period should have kept her in the top level
position in the country itself. Then why should
die during the same Mahadasa period?

That is, a particular Mahadasa period brought her

the wonderful victory in her career. The same
period could have taken her precious life.

Conclusions: A particular planet may deliver

different results on career, finances, health and
personal life. [2]

For Example (applicable under a single

Mahadasa period)

1. A person may super rich; but could face

worst difficulties on finances.

2. A person may be successful in the career;

but could face debacle in finances.

3. A succssful & wealthy businessman could

face major setback on health.

4. A successful, wealthy & healthy person

could face worst difficulties in his
personal life.

5. An unhealth person may have wonderful

family and financial strength.

6. A financially poor man could be enjoying

best marital partnerships.

Multiple probablities are likley to happen under

the single Mahadasa periods. The divisional chart
would teach us the deliverance of the Dasa Lords
on all aspects of our life irrespective being happy
(or) living healthy during its dasa periods.

Wonders of Varga Chart 2. The Divisional chart

would tell us the following results:

Divisional charts would tell us the impact on our

life by our parents, brothers & sisters, friends,
love/life/sex/work partners, neighbours, enemies,
well wishers and the family relatives.

1. What will happen to you through your

Parents (or) what will happen to your
parents after you had born?

2. What will happen to you through your

brothers & sisters (or) what will happen to
then after you had born (or) they had
born?

3. What will happen to you through your

friends & enemies (or) what will happen to
them after you had met them (or)
associated with them?

4. What will happen to you through your

love/life/sex partners (or) what will
happen to them after you had met them
(or) associated with them?

5. What will happen to you through your

work/business partners (or) what will
happen to them after you had met them
(or) associated with them?

6. What will happen to you through your

neighbours/associates (or) what will
happen to them during your association
with them?

Conclusions: Everbody’s horoscope would

provide endless probabilities on the imapct that
they face through others (or) the impact that they
create on others during their associated periods.
The Divisional chart would provide the nitty-gritty
of all these details.

Wonders of Vargha Charts 3: The Divisional chart

would tell us, whether a auspicious event would
lead to inauspcious result? (or) an inauspicious
result would lead to auspicious event?

I shall explain these astrological factors

through few examples:

Example 1: Couples are getting united through

love proposals; and they are getting consent from
their Parents too. A grand Wedding ceremony was
conducted and everybody enjoys the marriage
between the Couples.

Suppose if there is a discard on marital

relationships happen within few months and if the
marriage relationship fails (for multiple reasons),
then a auspicious event was leading to a
inauspicious result.

Example 2: There was a family feud; and all the

family members were disunited and living
separetly. Suppose, if any family members
becomes ill and admitted in the hospital, then the
family members get united in the hospital
premises. If the family members reunite among
themselves in a critical moment, then an
inauspicious event would lead to auspicious result.

Wonders of Varga Chart 4. The Divisional chart

would tell us the initimate behaviour and
character of every native. That is, it would tell us
the hidden story (or) dark side of every individual.

Let us understand this astrological factor with

few examples.

Example 1: Suppose a person has decent

behaviour and enjoys positive opinion about his
lifestyle. Nobody would never know that he had an
love/sexual affair at a particular period of time.

Example 2: A person is considered as very rich;

and enjoys good reputation in the society. Nobody
knows that he has large liability to settle.

Example 3: A person is occupying a highest

position in the Organization; and is considered as a
genius in the company. Nobody knows that he had
failed earlier in his school days on the same
subject.

Example 4: A person avoids getting married;

despite being successful in career and strong in
finances and enjoys good physical health. Nobody
knows that he doesn’t have the capability to
remain stimulated during the sexual relationships.

Conclusions: The divisional charts would tell us

the other side (or) darker side of every individual.

Wonders of Varga Chart 5. The Divisional chart

would tell us the nature of debacle, timing of the
debacle, duration of the debacle and impacts of
those debacles.

Let us explain it with few examples.

Example 1: A person who was mentally ill and was

hospitalized to treat the mental illness may be
living/working along with the others in the society.
The Divisional charts clearly shows the kind of
illness, timing of illness, duration of illness and
imapcts due to the illness.

Example 2: A person would have been begging on

the streets and sleeping in the sidewalks. Nobody
knows that he had a wonderful family and good
financial position in the earlier part of his life. The
Divisional chart would tell us the reason for his
poverty & isolation from the family, timing of the
disaster and duration of the sufferings; and also
shows the end results.

Example3: A person remains highly spiritual and

remain devot to his/her God. One day, that
particular person puts his/her faith on another
God (religion) and gets converted into the new
religion. The Divisional chart would tell us the
motive for the conversion and timings of the
conversion; and also the probability of staying in
the new religion and its possible impacts on
his/her life.

Conclusions: The Divisional charts would tell us

the nature of debacle, timings of the debacle,
duration of the debacle and imapcts due to the
debacle.

Benefits of Varga (divisional) charts:

1. We can find the exact functioning and

deliverance of every planet on different
aspects of the life during its dasa periods.

2. Impacts of others on your life and vice-

versa

3. Exact (benefice/malefic) nature of results

on every tasks/assignments/events.

4. It would provide wealth of information

about the hidden life of every individual.

5. It would provide the

nature/timing/duration/impacts of the
debacle.

Author’s Views: There are no books (or) scripts

available that could teach the functioning of
divisional charts. Few astrologers possess this
knowledge due to their good karma (or) divine
blessings. If you are able to identify those
astrologers, and willing to learn/work with them, it
is possible to acquire these knowledges. The
Divisional chart would be carrying wealth of
information.

But understanding the Astrology in a deeper

manner and knowing more about the future
may not be good always.
