Advanced Training Course on

Geological Mapping and Mineral Exploration

International School for Geoscience Resources (IS-Geo)

July 8 to 19, 2019

Background:

Geologic mapping provides many types of information essential both in exploration for new mineral deposits
and during subsequent mining. Geologic mapping of outcrops is used to describe the primary lithology and
morphology of rock bodies as well as age relationships between rock units. Mapping gathers structural
information, including attitudes of veins and post ore faults that can be used to predict the geology in the
subsurface, and improves the utility of geophysical data for refinement of subsurface targets.

Geological mapping is a step by step process during which geological map is compiled as a base for the state
and public administration, in particular for making decisions when planning civil works and formulating
policies on energy, mineral resources and environmental protection. The scope of training in geoscientific
mapping is to implement geological mapping through remote sensing and airborne geophysical surveys,
surface geophysical survey and filed experiments and organisational techniques from preparation phase to
finalisation of geological map and explanatory notes for Mineral exploration.

Trainings for geological mapping and mineral exploration are planned in the following main topics:

Satellite images Mapping

Geometrical Mapping Techniques
Fracture Mapping
Airborne Geophysical Survey
Surface Geophysical Survey and
Field training in geological mapping

IS Geo will invite renowned international experts to organise the training activity and all the experts will
provide a course material on their topics which will be compiled by the organisers and provided to all
participants.

Organisers:

national development through dedicated research and service across the geosciences. KIGAM world-leading
basic and applied research inside and outside of Korea lead to the development of new energy and mineral
resources and the mitigation of geological hazards and global climate change on Earth in the future.

The International School for Geoscience Resources(IS-Geo) opened in May 2010 as a geoscience
resource educational institution of the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources. Having
accumulated and shared more than 90 years’ worth of research results, the Korea Institute of Geoscience
and Mineral Resources has developed a variety of educations courses including expert training courses in
cooperation with world-class instructors. By fostering field-cantered geoscience resource professionals and
core global personnel through expert training and establishing a network of overseas human resources
through international cooperation, we contribute to securing the strategic mineral and energy resources of
the nation.

UNESCO launched UNESCO’s Earth Sciences Initiative in Africa to support the development of the next
generation of Earth scientists in Africa who are equipped with the necessary tools, networks and perspectives
to apply sound science to solving and benefiting from the challenges and opportunities of sustainable
development. The opportunities in the Earth sciences are great, starting with traditional mineral extraction
and extending into environmental management such as climate change adaptation, prevention of natural
hazards, and ensuring access to drinking water.

UNECA-AMDC: The African Union (AU) Heads of State and Government have taken deliberate steps to
address this weakness, through the endorsement of the Africa Mining Vision (AMV) and the establishment of
the African Minerals Development Centre (AMDC) to provide strategic operational support for the Vision and
its Action Plan. The AMDC aims to contribute to the fostering of a highly skilled and knowledge-driven mining
sector which delivers greater economic and social benefits as a result of high productivity levels.

Objective:

The overall objective and impact of Advanced Training Course on Geological Mapping and Mineral
Exploration is to improve the understanding and enhance the knowledge of young earth scientists from Africa
on the latest technologies and tools available for solving geosciences problems in Africa. The specific
objective and outcome is to strengthen the knowledge and skills in Africa’s mining sector and specifically of
young scientists from African Network of Earth Science Institutions (ANESI), to make them able to contribute
– in their respective countries – with their expertise and data to informed decision-making and good
governance as well as sustainable use of mineral resources and reinforcing the capacity of earth sciences
institutions.

Expected outcome:

Advanced Training in Geological Mapping aims to raise level of skills of African young scientists working in
the field geology mapping so as to African geologists can make geological maps to finally better cover the
continent at different scales with own good-quality data. Thus, modern geological maps at multiple scales will
match with requirements of potential investors of the public and private sectors, especially in the field of
mining, exploration. This training programme offer the techniques available for mapping with two full day

Letter of Motivation (2pages):

What is the reason for your application for the training course?
Cameroon is a country rich in natural resources such as cobalt / nickel, bauxite, iron, diamond, gold and uranium, natural gas, oil, gemstones etc, constituting
the most important types. The current level of understanding elucidated from studies related to some of these resources {Nguimatsia et al 2018,2019} are still
at an embryonic stage, necessitating further geological studies, particularly detail mapping. Aside poor governance, the limited number of experts in the
mining sector makes it difficult for the country to integrate mining as a key parameter for economic growth. Participating in this field mapping campaign will
foster my knowledge on geologic mapping and equip me with the necessary skills for a better management of mineral resources in Africa. Most importantly,
the networking opportunities I stand to gain through this opportunity will go a long way to initial innovative research in Cameroon.
Please describe the needs you have for the training with regards to your role in the Geological Mapping and
Mineral Exploration at your country
The mission of the Ministry of Mines is to promote the mining sector and improve the economic situation of local communities involved in mining. To achieve
this, it is necessary to update the knowledge on the geology and mineral resources of Cameroon through geological mapping, petrological and metallogenic
studies; Development and adaptation of new technologies (image processing) in geological research and mineral processing.
Establishment of a geological and mapping database for land use planning
Skills are therefore needed for data collection, digitization, updating existing old maps, development of new geological and mining maps including spatial
analysis of these maps to ensure sustainable exploitation and management of resources mineral.

Please describe your inducement to spread the knowledge of the course.

Mapping and practical notions acquired will enable a strategic and operational planning of activities of the Ministry of Mines. All available data will be
organized and structured for effective decision making and better management of our mineral resources. My impact will be perceptible not only at the level of
my colleagues and staffs of the department through capacity building, staff of the ministry of mines will also benefit. There will also be a great impact through
training workshops of partner ministries and institutions that I will organize regularly. The existing documents will be digitized and will be used to update and
produce mining maps in of the country. As a lecturer of mapping and petrography, the quality of my lectures and practical sessions with students will be
enhanced.
Please describe your past experience and current knowledge of geological mapping.
I am currently assistant lecturer in cartography and petrography at the Department of Earth Science at the University of Yaounde 1 (Reference: letter of
recommendation signed by my Head of Department). I teach first-year students in Geology how to produce maps (topographic and geological), read it,
interpret it, make cross sections, etc.
Also, the Department of Earth Science of the University of Yaounde 1, through the thesis of the students, digitizes the old geological maps and updates them
with the new geological information. This work also helps the government in the allocation of new mining permits.
Right from my undergraduate studies through master and finally graduating with a Ph.D. in mineral exploration some months back, I have been involved in
numerous geological field mapping campaigns both for academic purposes and for personal capacity building. This has enable to have a broad understanding
of the various geological settings observed in the country (Cameroon) and the different mineral resources. I have work on bauxite and gold deposits from two
disparate geologic settings (Nguimatsia et al (2018). https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jafrearsci.2018.12.006 ; Nguimatsia et al (2019) https://
doi.org/10.1007/978-3-030-01575-6_58) which has enabled me to also improve not only my mapping skills but also data presentation and interpretation.
Furthermore, I have participate in short courses on African metallogeny centered on geological mapping on phosphate deposits in Morocco (2015) and on
granite-related deposits (Sn-W) in the great-lake area, Rwanda (2017), under the sponsorship of SGA-SEG-UNESCO. These training have enabled me to
widen the scope of my understanding in the collection and interpretation of field data from different scales.
Presently I have a better mastery of the various steps involve in geological mapping from desk study, planning, data collection, map production and
interpretation. Nevertheless, I look forward to enhancing my knowledge of geological mapping and acquiring more skills and techniques. This is because
geological mapping from on terrain to another always has different challenges and one needs to be fully equiped to be able to overcome them for optimum
production. Attending this mapping exercise will enable me to widen the scope of my knowledge of geological mapping, improve my skills and understanding
of geological processes. This will definitely be beneficial not only to myself, but also, to the students which I have the responsibility to train to become better
geologists.
