Quantitative Analysis Time: 40mins

1) If I can buy 15 books less for Rs.900 when the price of each book goes up by Rs.3, then find
the original price and the number of copies I could buy at the initial price.

a)60 b)75 c)90 d)12

Sol: let the number of books bought initially for Rs.900 be ‘x’. The original price of book
was 900/x.
Now price of the book is up by Rs.3 i.e. (900/x)+3.
And number of books bought is reduced by 15.
i.e., (x-15)
Since the total amount spent is stell Rs.900, the product of price and number of books is sell
900.
i.e., [(900/x)+3](x-15)=900
solving this equation we get the roots of the equation as 75 an -60.
Since x cannot be negative,x=75.
Thus the original price of the book is 900/75=Rs.12.
Answer: d)12

2) If (x+2)1/2+(x+8)1/2=10, find the value of (x+191/100)

a)22 b)30 c)11 d)60

Sol: (x+2)1\2+(x+8)1\2=10
Squaring both sides, we get

X+2+x+8+2((x+2)1\2 *(x+8)1\2 )=100

x-45=-((x+2)1\2 *(x+8)1\2 )

Again squaring on both sides,

X2-90x+2025=x2+10x+16
X=2009/100
X+191/100=2009/100+191/100=22
Answer: a)22

3) 3x+1 +32x+1=270, find the value of x.

a)2 b)5 c)4 d)6

Sol: 3x+1 +32x+1=270

3.3x+3.32x=270
3x+32x=90
Substitute 3x = a, we get
a+a2=90
a2 +a-90=0
solving we get a=9,-10
a cannot be negative so a=9
3x =9
Therefore x=2;
Answer: a)2

4) The sum of the digits of a two digit number is 7. If the digits are interchanged, the resulting
number is 27 more than the original number. Find the original number.

a)25 b)52 c)35 d)53

Sol: let us take the two digits as x and y. x is ten’s digit and y is the unit’s digit, hence the
number itself is equal to (10x+y).
Since sum of the digits is 7,
X+y=7---- > 1
When the digits are interchanged, y becomes the 10x+y ten’s digit and x the units digit. The
number then becomes (10y+x), since this number is 27 more than the original number, we
get (10y+x)-(10x+y)=27;
y-x=3;-----> 2
on equating 1 and 2 we get y=5;x=2;
thus the number is 25.
Answer:a)25

5) Four years from now. Prakash’s age will be 4 times his son’s age. Twelve years from now he
will be 2.5 times his son’s age. Find their present ages.

a)38 b)28 c)24 d)40

Let prakash and his son’s present ages be x years and y years respectively.
Four years from now, prakash will be (x+4) years and son will be (y+4) years.
X+4=4(y+4)
x-4y=12----- >1
Twelve years from now, Prakash will be x+12 and his son y+12
X+12=5/12*(y+12)
2x-5y=36----- >2
Equatin 1 and 2 we get x=28
Answer:b)28

6) How many values of x and y satisfy the equations 2x+4y=8 and 3x+6y=10?

a)0 b)1 c)infinity d)2

Answer:a)0

Answer: c)infinity
8) Madhav, Munjal, Melkote bought a bike for Rs.45000. Munjal paid one-third of the total
amount paid by Madhav and Melkote. Madhav paid half of the amount paid by Munjal and
Melkote. How much did melkote pay for the bike?

a)Rs.12750 b)Rs.17250 c)Rs.18750 d)Rs.19250

Answer: c)Rs.18750

9) a:b=3:5, then find (2a+4b):(3a+5b)

a)3:5 b)13:17 c)14:17 d)17:14

Answer: b)13:17

10) The runs scored by Rahul and Ramesh are in the ratio of 13:7. If Ramesh scored 48 runs
less than Rahul, then find their individual runs.

a)150 and 102 b)104 and 56 c)140 and 92 d)146 and 98

Answer: b)104 and 56

Sol:13k-7k=48
K=8;
So 104 and 56

11) A,B and C with respective speeds of 9,18,27km/hr ,run around a circular track 1200m
long.If they started at the same time from the same point and run in the same
direction,when will they meet for the first time?

a)480min b)8min c)400min d)25min

Soln:
L=1200
Speed of A(a)=9*(15/8)=2.5 m/sec
Speed of B(b)=18*(15/8)=5 m/sec
Speed of C(c)=27*(15/8)=7.5 m/sec
They will meet for the first time at a time which is the LCM of L/(a-b) and L/(b-c)
L/(b-a)=1200/(5-2.5)=480s
L/(c-b)=1200/(7.5-5)=480s
They will meet for the first time after 480s ie 8 min

12) Two trains running at 45kmph and 54 kmph cross each other in 12 sec when they run in
opposite directions.When they run in the same direction , a person in the faster train
observes that he crossed the other train in 32 sec.Find the length of two trains..

a)80m and 250m b)60m and 270m c)90m and 240m d)100m and 230m

Soln:
Let p,q be the lengths of slow and faster train. When the trains are travelling in the opposite
directions ,relative speeds=45+54=99kmph=27.5mph.
Distance covered=sum of length of 2 trains =p+q
Therefore p+q=12*27.5=330m-----(1)
When the trains are travelling in the same directions , a person in the faster train observes that he
crossed the other train in 32 sec,distance covered is equal to the length of slower train,distance
covered=q
Relative speed=54-45=9=2.5m/sec
Q=2.5*32=80m------(2)
From 1 and 2 p=250m
Answer:80m and 250m

13) A man can row 8km in one hour in still water.If the speed of water current is 2km/hr and it
takes 3 hrs for him to a new place and return,find the starting point to the new place.

a)13 ¼km b)122/4 km c) 111/4 km d) 152/3 km

Soln:
Let the distance be x km
Upstream=8-2=6kmph
Downstream=8+2=10kmph
Total time= Upstream+ Downstream
x/6+x/10=3hrs
16x/60=3
111/4 km

14) At what time between 2 and 3’o clock are the hands of a clock together?

a)3:151/4 b) 2:1010/11 c)5:25 d)6:30

Soln:
To coincide with each other, the angle between them should be 0 deg.Let this happen p min after
2’o clock.
(60+p/2)-6p
p=120/11=10 10/11 min
Coincide at 2:10 10/11’o clock

15) If the hands of a clock coincide every 65 min ,how much time does the clock lose or gain per
day?

a) 10 100/143min b) 15 90/143min c) 12 107/143min d) 10 1/13min

Soln:
If the hands of a clock coincide every 65 min,it makes 65 5/11 min of the clock =65 min of correct
time
Hence the clock gains (65 5/11 – 65)=5/11 every 65 min
In one day it gains (24*60*5/11)/65=10 100/143min
16) A and B working separately can do a piece of work in 6 and 9 days respectively. They work
on alternate days starting with A on the first day. In how many days will the work be done?

a)9 days b)13days c)7days d)5days

Sol: Since they are working on alternate days, let us consider a period of two days.
In a period of two days, work done by A and B=1/6+1/9=5/18.
If we consider 3 such time periods of 2 days(we are considering 3 periods because in the fraction
5/18,the numerator 5 goes 3 times in the denominator 18)
Work done=3*(5/18)=15/18
Remaining work=3/18=1/6
Now it is A’s turn since 3 whole number of periods are over.
Time taken by A to finish 1/6th of the work is one day.
So, total time taken =3*2+1=7 days.

17) A alone can do a piece of work in 12 days and B alone in 18 days. If C takes twice as long as
A and B together, how long will B and C together take to complete the work?

a)12days b)8days c)10days d)6days

Sol: A does the work in 12 days. B in 18 days. Working together takes (12*18)/(12+18)=36/5 days.
C takes twice the time A and B together take;i.e. C takes 2*(36/5)=72/5 days to do the work.
If B and C work together, work done per day=1/18+5/72=9/72=1/8
Hence, B and C together complete in 8 days.

18) A can do a work in 12 days. When he had worked for 3 days B joined him. If they complete
the work in 3 more days, in how many days can B alone finish the work?

a)8 days b)7days c)9days c)6days

Sol: Work done by A in one day=1/12

No. of days A worked=3+3=6
Total work done by A=6*1/12=1/2
The remaining ½ of the work done by B in 3 days.
Complete work done by B in 3*2/1=6 days.

19) A and B together can do a piece of work in 14 2/5 days; B and C together in 12 days.
After A worked for 8 days, B for 12 days C takes up and finished it alone in 6 days. In how
many days will each of them do the work, working alone?
a) B alone can do it in 30 days and A alone can do it in 30 days
b) B alone can do it in 34 days and A alone can do it in 26 days
c) B alone can do it in 36 days and A alone can do it in 24 days
d) B alone can do it in 38 days and A alone can do it in 22 days

Sol: Work done by A and B in 1 day=5/72

Work done by B and C in 1 day=1/12
A worked for 8 days, B for 12 days C for 6 days to complete the work.
8a+12b+6c=1 where a,b,c are the works done in one day by A,B and C respectively.
(8a+8b)+(4b+4c)+2c=1
8(5/72)+4(1/12)+2c=1
40/72+4/12+2c=1
2c=1-(64/72)=8/72
C=4/72=1/18
C alone can complete the work in 18 days.
Work done by B in 1 day=(b+c)-c=1/12-1/18=1/36
Work done by A in 1 day=(a+b)-b=5/72-1/36=1/24
B alone can do it in 36 days and A alone can do it in 24 days.

20) If 9 men and 12 boys can do a piece of work in 4 days and 4 men and 16 boys can do the
same piece of work in 6 days, how long will 6 men and 24 boys take to complete the same
work?

a)5days b)8days c)4days d)6days

Sol: Given 9m+12b can do the work in 4 days and 4m+16b in 6 days
4(9m+12b)=6(4m+16b)=m=4b
Now 9m+12b=9(4m)+12b=48b
We want 6m+24b=48b
6 men and 24 boys also take 4 days to complete the work.
