How to prepare samples of thermal cycle test and what has

changed in the procedure?

 Test plate with mounted junction box is stored in the climatic

chamber

 A force of 5 N shall be applied vertically during the test

 Attach a suitable temperature sensor to the front surface of the

junction box near the middle

 Close chamber and subject the test plates to cycling between

measured junction box temperatures of -40 °C … +85 °C in
accordance with the profile in Figure 1 on the right side
  The current flows periodically through the heat up cycle to
the rated current at temperature from -40°C to +80°C
 Throughout the test

New test procedure for bypass diode thermal test

(part a)
1) Operation of diodes in the direction of current flow
2) Connect wires of the manufacturer´s minimum recommend
cross section to the output terminals of the junction box
3) Connect the leas wire fo VD and ID on both iodes in the
diode terminals
4) Heat the module and junction box up to a temperature of (30 ±
2)°C
5) Apply, the pulsed current (pulse width 1ms) equal to rated
current of juction box, measure the forward voltage VD1 of diode
6) Using the same procedure, measure VD2 at (50 ± 2)°C, VD3 at
(70 ± 2)°C and VD4 at (90 ± 2)°C
7) Then, obtain the VD versus Tj characteristic by a least-squares-
fit curve from VD1, VD2, VD3 and VD4

New test procedure for bypass diode thermal test Requirements:

(part b)
 The diode junction temperature Tj shall not exceed the diode
manufacturer´s maximum junction temperature
8) Heat the module (75 ± 2)°C. Apply a current to the module equal
to the rated current of the junction box. Apply current to the
specimen equal to the rated current ±2% of the junction box.  Current carrying parts not retained in the original position
After 1 h measure the forward voltage of each diode.
9) Using the VD versus Tj characteristic obtained in item 7), obtain
 Deformation of insulation parts serving as protection againgst
Tj from VD at Tamb = 75°C, ID = ISC of the diode during the test in
electric shock
8)
10) Increase the applied current to 1,25 times of the rated current of
the junction box while maintaining the ambient temperature  Other deformation of insulation parts which could impair safety or
inside the specimen at (75 ± 2)°C function of the junction box
11) Maintain the current flow for 1h

The new 2 PfG 1169/10.19
Why a new 2 PfG 1169?

 Two valid international standards

 EN 50618:2014 „Electric cables for photovoltaic systems“
 IEC 62930:2017 „Electric cables for photovoltaic systems with a voltage rating of 1,5 kV DC“

 Both based on the requirements of 2 PfG 1169/08.07

 Differences in the standards

 2 PfG 1169 is a “brand” => Various regions still require tests according to this standard
