Australian Hardware
The primary policy in Australian Hardware is the World Health and Safety Policy whose

aim is to make sure that work is done in a safer manner according to ethics of the Australian

Hardware as well as the legal requirement so as to provide as well as maintain a workplace that

is safe. The principal duty of Australian Hardware is to ensure there is a work environment that

is safe for contractors, employees, visitors as well as customers to carry out their duties. The

Australian Hardware has the commitment to ensure that their workers have a continuous well-

being by implementing policies such as injury policy, sustainability policy as well as the risk

policy.

These three policies are the key players in WHS Act within Australian Hardware because

they all put both human safety as well as environmental safety. Under sustainability policy, the

following principles must be put into consideration:

 To reduce environmental risk, an action must be taken immediately without hesitation.

 Setting stable mechanisms of ensuring that the next generation is treated fair by the

Australian Hardware by not depleting natural resources within the environment.

 By improving both economical as well as social well-being. This was done by

considering resource wastage calculation as well as how the employees are contributing

towards it. The policies that contribute to hazard identification are injury policy as well as

risk policy. These two policies can be combined and categorized under risk management

policing.

WHS Management Systems for Australian Hardware

As part of the proposed WHS Management Systems for Australian Hardware, the work health
and safety programs of the business must be review to ensure that program is specific,
appropriate and up to date. Introduction or amendment of policies must be consider. In this case.
The Australian Hardware must review the procedures regarding the following:
 The manual lifting of outdoor furniture and hardware goods in warehouses and in
customer service areas.
 Hazardous materials handling by forklift drivers, drivers and customer service staff.

These two contribute a lot in the Lost Time to Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR) of the business.
To resolve that issue, the Australian Hardware must introduce a policy in accordance with WHS
requirements. Such policy may include that all heavy furniture and hardware goods must be done
using a forklift. In addition to that, hazardous materials must be properly packed and handled and
employees must have proper training in handling these hazardous materials to avoid injuries.
These new as well as the existing policies must be documented in the business and posted in the
workplace in a convenient and accessible location so that everyone can refer to it whenever
needed. In line with that, it is the role and responsibility of the store manager as well as the
department managers to ensure that these new and existing policies are properly communicated
with the employees and that these policies are being monitored regularly. It is also very
important that training and induction programs must be given to new employees and that the
current employees must be given refreshment trainings from time to time. Also, there must be a
constant documenting of procedures as well as recording of health and safety issues as part of the
monitoring and controlling process. Lastly, for a WHS management system to be successful it
needs to have the commitment of senior management, so communication with senior
management is essential at all stages of this process.
On the other hand, the resources involve in these proposed WHS Management Systems are
human resources including the time and effort of the management to provide training and
monitoring and the employees time and effort to undergo the training, physical resources like the
room needed for the training as well as purchasing additional equipment that are related to the
new policies like extra forklifts and financial resources that include the budget for the training of
the employees.

Worker Participation
PCBU: a Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking has the primary duty of care to ensure
the health and safety of workers while they are at work in the business or undertaking. A PCBU
is also responsible for ensuring work carried out does not carry risk to the health and safety of
others. Officers: are required to exercise ‘due diligence’ to ensure the PCBU meets that duty.
Workers: take reasonable care to ensure acts or omissions do not adversely affect the health and
safety of others; Comply with reasonable instructions from the PCBU to assist them in
complying with the WHS Act; and Co-operate with policies or procedures relating to health and
safety that the workers have been notified of it.

Workplace Hazard identification

Based from the Australian Hardware national WHS data, it is very evident that most of the
incidents recorded were mainly injuries caused by falling objects and lifting heavy equipment or
materials, cuts or wounds while having product demonstrations, and improper chemical
handling.
According to Work Health and Safety Regulation 2017, Management of risk of falling objects, a
person conducting a business or undertaking at a workplace must manage, in accordance risks to
health and safety associated with an object falling on a person, if the falling object is reasonably
likely to injure the person. In order to these, the management must introduce a system to properly
stack and store the boxes, products, equipment and chemicals and must be strictly implemented
to avoid falling objects. Also, the management must require the employees to use forklift and
trolleys when lifting and/or transporting heavy equipment. It is also very important that the
employees, particularly the demonstration, must undergo training on handling and using the
product/equipment so that they will be more familiar and knowledgeable about the products and
reduce the risk of accidents. Regarding chemicals, the forklift driver always have issues with
fumes, it strongly recommended that the forklift must be checked and fix regularly. Lastly, the
recording used by the company is incomplete, the management must pay attention to the
recording and monitoring of the incidents. Employees and the manager or supervisor responsible
in the recordkeeping and monitoring must strictly records all the incidents and make follow ups.
To ensure that the safety plan is being practiced, the management must have a scheduled review
and constant reporting. They must ensure that all incidents are being resolved and followed up
and must change or implement new policies if needed.
For the training and induction of employees, the management must ensure that all new
employees must be given induction and the training needed for their role, for example the
customer service, the demonstration team in particular, must be given a product orientation to
make sure that they are familiar with the product and avoid any injuries. They must have a no
training no work policy.

Risk inadequacy
The inadequacy of PPE in item heavy lifting

The main function of personal protective equipment is to provide a shield between the

wearer as well as the material or item. In item lifting process, energy is what is being utilized

hence there is less significance of the PPE. The employees will be affected health-wisely because

lifting of heavy items is not allowed for it causes a backache, headache as well as muscle

complications. Therefore, it is advisory for Wollongong store to buy material handling machines

such as forklifts to lift the heavy furniture as well as hardware products. Through this, there will

be an increase in efficiency as well as reduction of the costs. For enormous hardware goods, a

medium crane can be employed to help in items lifting.

Expert Advice
1. Understand the risks. Once you know the particular hazards of your job or workplace,
you can take steps to reduce your risk of work-related injury or illness.

2. Reduce workplace stress. Common causes include long hours, heavy workload, job
insecurity and conflicts with coworkers or bosses. Stress can lead to depression, sleeping
difficulties and problems with concentration.

3. Take regular breaks. Staying fresh and alert will help you avoid injury or burnout.
Schedule the most difficult tasks of each day for times when your concentration is best, such as
first thing in the morning.

4. Avoid stooping or twisting. Use ergonomically designed furniture and equipment, and

rearrange your work area so that everything you need is within easy reach.

5. Use mechanical aids whenever possible. Instead of trying to lift or carry a heavy object,
use a wheelbarrow, conveyor belt, crane or forklift.

6. Protect your back. If you do need to pick up and carry heavy loads, keep the load close
to your body and lift with your thigh muscles.

7. Wear protective equipment to suit the task. If worn correctly, gear such as earplugs,
earmuffs, hard hat, safety goggles, gloves or full-face mask can dramatically reduce your risk of
injury.

8. Stay sober. Alcohol and drugs are a contributing factor in around three per cent of
workplace fatalities.

9. Talk over any concerns. Your employer or human resources manager need to be

informed about hazards and risks. Your employer is legally obliged to ensure a safe working
environment.

WHSMS system to further improvement

The Australian Hardware take seriously its legal and ethical obligations to provide employees,
contractors and customers a working environment that will not place people's health, safety and
wellbeing at risk.
In recognising this policy, the Australian Hardware will strive to maintain an injury- and
illness-free workplace with a focus on effective risk management strategies aimed at reducing
workplace risks. This will be achieved by way of:
 Recognition of WHS legislative obligations and a desire to meet those duties
 Developing a risk management-based WHS program that is relevant to Australian
Hardware sites and activities, which will provide the framework in which WHS is
managed across all Australian Hardware sites
 Providing required tools and equipment to safely carry out assigned activities as well as
relevant instruction, training and supervision to ensure that all work activities are carried
out by suitably competent and trained people.
 All sites must be regularly inspected, using a WHS inspection checklist to identify and
resolve hazards.
 As a requirement from The Safe Work Australia Model Code of Practice wherein duty
holders must work through the Hierarchy of Control when managing risks, Australian
Hardware ranks risk control measures from the highest level of protection and reliability
to the lowest level of protection and reliability.
 Encouraging participation and involvement with WHS at all levels through effective
consultative mechanisms
 Monitoring and evaluating WHS performance and activities across all Australian
Hardware sites to ensure that WHS strategies are driving continual improvement.

Recordkeeping Policy and Procedure/s

After conducting WHS inspection, the risks are reviewed on a regular basis using a WHS Risk
Assessment Form and will be treated immediately. Significant WHS and general risks that are
assessed and treated (controls) are placed on organisational unit risk registers.

WHSMS Improvement and Recommendation

After identifying and assessing risks, the company will establish suitable risk control measures
for the highest priority risks with reference to the risk assessment. Based from the risk
assessment, wherein the manual lifting of furniture and hardware goods is a risk factor, then as a
risk control, the management will require employees to use a forklift for heavy materials and
goods as part of the policy. Hazardous materials handling is another risk factor, to control this
risk, the management will introduce a standard for proper packaging and handling of these
hazardous materials.

To ensure that these actions and new procedures are properly communicated, supervisors and
managers will consult with workers directly involved in the process and will meet all the
employees to discuss these procedures. Also, this changes will be posted out o the common areas
of the employees. These risk control measures will be implemented right after the employees
were informed.

As part of the regular monitoring, the company will adopt three monitoring activities:
 Periodic performance monitoring: evaluating control measures in a formal review process
on an annual or semi-annual basis, such as with auditing;
 Scheduled monitoring: monitoring control measures on a regular basis, such as reviewing
hazard trends and identifying problem control measures once per month; and
 Ongoing monitoring: monitoring control measures on a daily basis, such as when hazard
reports are submitted.

Induction WHSMS
The key thing to remember about inductions is that they’re mutually beneficial for both you and
your employee. The new hire feels well-adjusted, which means they’re less likely to start looking
for another job; they’re happier and more settled and you’re less likely to lose them to a different
organization.

WHS Legal Requirement

The proposed WHSMS is based on the relevant legislation:
 Work Health and Safety Act 2011;
 Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011

Organisational Requirements
As part of the Australian Hardware organisational requirement to meet its legal and ethical
obligations to provide a safe workplace, the proposed WHSMS will help the business identify
the improvement and policy needs and will provide a system that aims to promote health and
safety and eliminate problems like injuries that adhere to the standards of the WHS laws.
