If
jazz is an expression of life, then perfection is certainly not the end goal – life is lived from
too many viewpoints to be able to have a “perfection.” If you win every time you play,
doesn’t it get boring? How much challenge and adventure should there be in a life’s game
– in a musical performance? What are the objectives of the musicians? What does the audience
want? How is that determined? Who should determine that? What’s the relationship between the
performers and the audience? Does the giving and receiving of pleasure have anything to do with
it? Do any of these questions really matter? And to whom?

Here are the very distilled results of 2 lengthy tours by this trio. It was impossible to review each
concert that we recorded – there were simply too many – so I quickly chose a few renditions we
did from the different parts of the world we visited.

All I can say is that it was a challenge and an adventure the whole way through. Each night
a different city, a different venue, a different audience, a different piano and a brand new
opportunity to bring all the elements of this game together in a big win.

I hope you can share some of the excitement the three of us had through these recordings. And I
hope it brings you some pleasure, as it surely did me.

My sincere thanks to Christian, Brian and Gayle and to the production and management team that
helped me create this slice of life for you all.

My thanks also to our mentors who helped us form ourselves as musicians: especially Bud Powell,
Ahmad Jamal and Miles Davis.
