Objectives
1. This course will illustrate the students in the concepts of Linear Algebra and calculus.
2. To equip the students with standard concepts like differentiation, integration at an
intermediate to advanced level of mathematics to develop the confidence and ability among
the students to handle various applications in their respective core subjects.

Unit I - Linear Algebra (Matrices and Solution of equations)


Basic definitions of matrices Rank of a matrix by echelon form, Normal form, Normal form of
PAQ, solving system of homogeneous and non-homogeneous equations linear equations, Eigen
values and Eigen vectors and their properties.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this unit, the student will be able to
1. Determine the rank of a matrix
2. Solving systems of non-homogeneous linear equations
3. Solving systems of homogeneous linear equations
4. Eigen values and eigenvectors

Unit II - Linear Algebra (Inverse of Matrix and reduction into various forms)
Cayley-Hamilton theorem (without proof), finding inverse and power of a matrix by Cayley-
Hamilton theorem, Diagonalization of a matrix, quadratic forms and nature of the quadratic forms,
reduction of quadratic form to canonical forms by orthogonal transformation.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this unit, the student will be able to
1. Diagonal form and different factorizations of a matrix; (L3)
2. Identify special properties of a matrix, such as positive definite, etc.
3. Use this information to facilitate the calculation of matrix characteristics; (L3)
4. Understand quadratic forms and their conversions by orthogonal transformation

Unit III - Differential Equations (First order and First degree)


Formation of differential equations, Differential equations of 1st order and 1st degree-variable
separable, Homogeneous equations and equations reducible to homogeneous, Exact, Non-exact,
Linear and Bernoulli’s equations. Applications of Differential equations of 1st order and 1st
degree- Newton’s law of cooling, Law of Natural growth and decay, Orthogonal trajectories.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this unit, the student will be able to
1. Form the differential equations from the given situations
2. Solve the differential equations of first order and first degree
3. Understand the applications of differential equations
Unit IV - Differential Equations (Second and higher order)
Non-Homogeneous linear differential equations of second and higher order with constant co-
efficient with RHS term of the type 𝑒 𝑎𝑥 , sin 𝑎𝑥 , cos 𝑎𝑥, polynomials in 𝑥, 𝑒 𝑎𝑥 𝑉(𝑥), 𝑥𝑉(𝑥).
Method of variation of parameters, Cauchy’s and Legendre’s linear equations, Applications to L-
C-R Circuit problems and Deflection of Beams.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this unit, the student will be able to
1. Identify the essential characteristics of linear differential equations with constant
coefficients
2. Solve the linear differential equations with constant coefficients by appropriate method
3. Classify and interpret the solutions of linear differential equations
4. Formulate and solve the higher order differential equation by analyzing physical
situations

Unit V - Multiple Integrals


Double integrals, change of order of integration, double integration in polar coordinates, areas
enclosed by plane curves. Evaluation of triple integrals, change of variables between Cartesian,
cylindrical and spherical polar co-ordinates

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this unit, the student will be able to
1. Evaluate double integrals of functions of several variables in two dimensions using
Cartesian and polar coordinates
2. Apply double integration techniques in evaluating areas bounded by region
3. Evaluate multiple integrals in Cartesian, cylindrical and spherical geometries

Unit I - Water Technology


Introduction –Soft Water and hardness of water, Problems on harness, Estimation of hardness of
water by EDTA Method - Estimation of dissolved oxygen, Alkalinity, acidity, Water treatment
for domestic purpose (Chlorination, bleaching powder, ozonisation), Boiler troubles - scale and
sludge, Priming and Foaming, Caustic Embrittlement and Boiler Corrosion. External Treatment:
zeolite and ion-exchange processes - desalination of brackish water, reverse osmosis (RO) and
electro dialysis.

At the end of Unit, students will be able to
1. List the differences between temporary and permanent hardness of water
2. Explain the principles of reverse osmosis and electro dialysis.
3. Illustrate problems associated with hard water - scale and sludge.
4. Explain the working principles of different Industrial water treatment processes.

Unit II - Electrochemistry and Corrosion


Electrodes – concepts, electrochemical cell, Nernst equation, cell potential calculations. Primary
cells –Leclanche cell, Li Battery Secondary cells – lead acid, and lithium ion batteries- working
of the batteries including cell reactions.
Fuel cells- Basic Principles and Working Principles of hydrogen-oxygen, methanol fuel cell
Corrosion: Introduction to corrosion, electrochemical theory of corrosion, differential aeration
cell corrosion, galvanic corrosion, metal oxide formation by dry electrochemical corrosion, Pilling
Bedworth ratios and uses, Factors affecting the corrosion, cathodic and anodic protection,
electroplating and electro less plating (Nickel and Copper).

1. Apply Nernst equation for calculating electrode and cell potentials
2. Apply Pilling Bedworth rule for corrosion and corrosion prevention

Unit III - Polymers and Fuel Chemistry


Introduction to polymers, functionality of monomers, Mechanism of chain growth, step growth
and coordination polymerization, Thermoplastics and Thermo-setting plastics-: Preparation,
properties and applications of PVC and Bakelite. Elastomers – Preparation, properties and
applications of Buna S, Buna N, Thiokol
Fuels – Types of fuels, calorific value, Combustion: Basic principles and numerical problems.
Analysis of coal, Liquid Fuels refining of petroleum, knocking and anti-knock agents, Octane and
Cetane values, cracking of oils. Preparation, composition and applications of Gaseous Fuels:
Natural gas, Producer gas, Water gas, Coal gas.

1. Explain different types of polymers and their applications
2. Solve the numerical problems based on Calorific value
3. Select suitable fuels for IC engines
4. Explain calorific values, octane number, refining of petroleum and cracking of oils

Unit IV - Advanced Engineering Materials


Refractories- Classification, Properties and Applications of refractories.
Lubricants- Classification, Functions of lubricants, Mechanism, Properties of lubricating oils
and Applications
Building materials- Composition, preparation of Portland cement (Dry and Wet processes),
Setting and Hardening of cement.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of Unit, students will be able to
1. Identify the factors affecting the refractory material
2. Illustrate the functions and properties of lubricants
3. Demonstrate the phases and reactivity of concrete formation
4. Identify the constituents of Portland cement
5. Enumerate the reactions at setting and hardening of the cement

Unit V - Surface Chemistry and Applications


Introduction to surface chemistry, colloids, micelle formation, synthesis of colloids (any two
methods with examples), chemical and electrochemical methods (not more than two methods) of
preparation of nano metals and metal oxides, stabilization of colloids and nano materials by
stabilizing agents, solid-gas interface, solid-liquid interface, applications of colloids and nano
materials – catalysis, medicine, sensors.

2. Outline the preparation of nano materials and metal oxides

Unit II - Basics of C Programming, Input and output and Control Flow


Variable names, data types and sizes, constants, declarations, arithmetic operators, relational and logical
operators, type conversions, increment and decrement operators, bitwise operators, assignment operators
and expressions, conditional expressions precedence and order of evaluation.
Standard input and output, formatted output-printf, formatted input-scanf.
Statements and blocks, if else, else-if, switch, Loops-while and for, Loops-Do- while, break and continue,
Goto and Labels.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of unit, students will be able to

1. Recognize the elements of C Programming language.


2. Recognize the formatted input/output functions for I/O operations.

Unit III - Functions and Program Structure, Factoring methods


Functions and Program Structure: Basics of functions, functions returning non-integers, external
variables, scope variables, header variables, register variables, block structure, initialization, recursion,
the C processor.
Finding the square root of a number, the smallest divisor of a number, the greatest common divisor of two
integers, generating prime numbers.

At the end of unit, students will be able to

Unit IV - Arrays , Strings & Pointers

1. Setting out of a building: The student should set out a building (single room only) as per the
given building plan using tape only.
2. Setting out of a building: The student should set out a building (single room only) as per the
given building plan using tape and cross staff.
3. Construct a wall of height 50 cm and wall thickness 1½ bricks using English bond (No mortar
required) - corner portion – length of side walls 60 cm.
4. Construct a wall of height 50 cm and wall thickness 2 bricks using English bond (No mortar
required) - corner portion – length of side walls 60 cm.
5. Computation of Centre of gravity and Moment of inertia of a given rolled steel section by
actual measurements.
6. Installation of plumbing and fixtures like Tap, T-Joint, Elbow, Bend, Threading etc;
7. Plastering and Finishing of wall
8. Application of wall putty and painting a wall
9. Application of base coat and laying of Tile flooring of one square meter
