1 – first, necessity of constant effort to learn…to become virtuous is to have a constant desire to
learn more….we are formed through our close relationships with others…natural thoughts to have about
how people feel when friends come to visit or when learning, so too is it in the junzi’s nature not to
anger when people do not acknowledge him

Book 1.6 – proper moral development begins with filial piety and then extends that attitude to ever-
larger groups of people ; the development of one’s proper relationship with one’s parents and others
around him/her is fundamental in life
