Introduction to Media
Lesson1. What is Media?

Lesson Description:
The course introduces the learners to the idea that the word media – which they may already

between a person or persons and their intended audience.

Lesson Objectives:
After this lesson, the students will be able to learn how to do the following:
1. Trace the communication process that happens with human being
2. Map out the system of information flow in the communication process
3. Differentiate the relevance and importance of each kind of media

Lecture:

Do you often watch films?

Do you listen to radio every day?

Do you send text messages to your friends using your Smartphone or a

mobile application (also known as “apps”)

Do you read newspapers online?

What does Media mean?
Media is the plural form of medium, which (broadly speaking) describes any channel of
communication. This can include anything from printed paper to digital data, and encompasses
art, news, educational content and numerous other forms of information.

Examples of media:
 The New Yorker magazine
 CDs and DVDs
 Newspapers, television, radio, printed matter, Internet information and advertising.

1. S - Source
The source in other words also called the sender is the one from whom the thought originates. He
is the one who transfers the information to the receiver after carefully putting his thoughts into words.

2. M - Message
When an individual converts his thoughts into words, a message is created. The process is also called as
Encoding.

3. C – Channel

Channel - Channel actually refers to the medium how the information flows from the sender to
the receiver.

How does one know what the other person is speaking? - Through Hearing.

How does one know whether the pasta he has ordered is made in white sauce or not? -
Through Tasting.

How does one know that there is a diversion ahead or it’s a no parking zone? - Through Seeing.

How will an individual come to know that the food is fresh or stale? How do we find out the
fragrance of a perfume? - Through Smelling.

How will you find out whether the milk is hot or not? - Through Touching.

All the five senses are the channels which help human beings to communicate with each other.

4. R - Receiver
When the message reaches the receiver, he tries to understand what the listener actually wants to
convey and then responds accordingly. This is also called as decoding.

SMCR communication model with implied feedback, 1960

FEEDBACK
the return of part of the output of an electronic circuit, device, or mechanical system to its input,
so modifying its characteristics.
In negative feedback a rise in output energy reduces the input energy; in positive feedback an
increase in output energy reinforces the input energy

DO THIS!
Based on my understanding, this photo highlights the difference between traditional and

digital media. It states here that the process of traditional media is very different from digital media,
because traditional media is a form of communication that was used before the advancement of
technology. Meaning that digital media is more advanced than the traditional. And it also shows that
when you use digital media, you are more capable of providing and obtaining information easily. While
the traditional media, its job is to be able to deliver information to many audiences. Meaning that in
traditional media, you can only get information.
