Semester: 5 Date of Performance: 26/08/20
Subject Name: Computer Networks Lab Subject Code: CSP-301

1. Aim/Overview of the practical:

To Implement Dynamic Routing using RIP (Routing Information Protocol).

2. Task to be done:
Implement the below Network using Dynamic Routing Protocol (RIP).

A)Find the Administrative Distance of RIP

b) Find out which protocol is being used while transfering the packets from one PC to Another PC.
3. Steps for experiment/practical:

● Open a new file in cisco packet tracer

● Click on connection devices icon and place 4 PT-routers

● Make Serial connections between routers

● Add PT-switches by clicking on switch icon

● Connect Switches to routers for FastEhternet connections

● Click on end devices icon and add end devices

● Connect end devices and Switches

● Network Information:

4. Observations/Discussions(For applied/experimental sciences/materials based labs):
To verify whether we have built the networks correctly, we can ping the end devices across different networks,
to verify if we have implemented the network correctly.

It is done as:
As we can see, the connection among devices has been successful. Thus, we have verified that the connection is
correct.

When we tried pinging a new device, it was observed that the 1st packet would always get lost in the
transmission, but if connection is okay, the rest of the packets will always be delivered perfectly. In all ping
attempts, packet loss was25%.

We also observed that each router has a specific routing database, in which information about all other networks
present in a system is stored. Generally, in RIP routing, networks keep updating after 30 seconds. But, in this
experiment, it took an individual router roughly 3 mins to get all updated information. We used a command:
show ip rip database, to see this information.

Router-1:

Router-3:

5. Result/Output/Writing Summary:
Rip routing protocol provides following avantages:

● In Static Routing, we used to feed remote networks, but here we feed close networks, rest of the
database gets automatically updated..
● Simpler to configure on larger networks
● It's a standardized protocol.
● Provides fast convergence.
● It sends triggered updates when the network changes.
Following are disadvantages of RIP routing protocol:

● RIP checks with its neighboring routers every 30 seconds, which increases network traffic.
● RIP has a maximum hop count of 15, which means that on large networks, other remote routers may not
be able to be reached..
● RIP only updates neighbors so the updates for non-neighboring routers are not first-hand information.

7. Learning outcomes (What I have learnt):

1. Learnt in depth about dynamic routing

2. Can perform dynamic routing with CLI and GUI modes
3. Learnt about new commands possible with router CLI
4. Can manage a fair number of routers using dynamic routing
5. Learnt about new cross-validation techniques for checking network performance
6. Learnt about connection of Server as an end device in a network
