71-00-00-710-001-B - Dry Motoring Check

** ON A/C 051-100

TASK 71-00-00-710-001-B
Dry Motoring Check

WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT ALL ENGINE OPERATING AREAS ARE AS CLEAN AS POSSIBLE. ALL
RAMPS, TAXIWAYS, RUNWAYS AND OTHER OPERATING AREAS MUST BE VERY CLEAN
TO PREVENT BAD DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE, AIRCRAFT AND PERSONS IN THE AREA.

WARNING: DO NOT TRY TO STOP THE FAN FROM TURNING BY HAND. THIS CAN CAUSE INJURY TO
THE PERSONS AND DAMAGE TO THE EQUIPMENT.

WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT THE LANDING GEAR GROUND SAFETIES AND THE WHEEL CHOCKS
ARE IN POSITION. MOVEMENT OF THE AIRCRAFT CAN BE DANGEROUS.

WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT THE TRAVEL RANGES OF THE FLIGHT CONTROL SURFACES ARE
CLEAR BEFORE YOU MOTOR THE ENGINE. MOVEMENT OF THE FLIGHT CONTROL SUR-
FACES CAN BE DANGEROUS AND/OR CAUSE DAMAGE.

WARNING: DO NOT TOUCH THE PROBES DURING OR IMMEDIATELY AFTER THIS PROCEDURE. THE
PROBES WILL BE HOT AND CAN BURN YOU.

CAUTION: - SEE THE APPLICABLE FIGURE FOR WIND LIMIT RESTRICTIONS WHEN THE ENGINE OP-
ERATES.
- NATURAL WINDS AND IRREGULAR FORCES FROM SUDDEN GUSTS INCREASE THE
DANGEROUS AREA.
- DO NOT GO ABOVE OPEN COWLING LIMITATIONS WHEN YOU DO THE TESTS.
- THE OPERATOR MUST FULLY KNOW ALL THE OPERATING LIMITS AND PROCEDURES
BEFORE THE ENGINE OPERATES.

CAUTION: DO NOT REPLACE AN IDLE LEAK CHECK BY A MOTORING TEST. YOU CANNOT DETECT
POTENTIAL OIL LEAKS WITH A MOTORING TEST. IF YOU DO A MOTORING TEST INSTEAD
OF AN IDLE LEAK CHECK, YOU CAN CAUSE AN ENGINE SHUTDOWN.

CAUTION: MAKE SURE THAT THERE IS NO HYDRAULIC GROUND POWER SUPPLY CONNECTED TO
THE AIRCRAFT WHEN YOU DO THIS PROCEDURE. IF A HYDRAULIC GROUND POWER SUP-
PLY IS CONNECTED, THERE IS A RISK OF DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE PUMPS.

CAUTION: REMOVE THE PROTECTIVE COVERS FROM THE PROBES BEFORE YOU DO THIS PROCED-
URE.

1. Reason for the Job

It is necessary to do a dry motoring check during or after inspection or maintenance. The dry motoring check
makes sure that the engine will turn freely and that the instruments operate correctly, and that the operation of
the starter obeys the speed requirements for correct starts. You can use the dry motoring to dry the remaining
fuel that can collect in the combustion chamber or the lower section of the turbine casing.

A. Preparation for test
(1) Obey the wind limitations and safety precautions during engine ground operations
(Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-00-869-003) and (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-00-869-004) .
(2) Make sure that the engine inlet and exhaust covers are removed. Make sure that these areas are
clear of unwanted objects.
(3) Make a visual check of the temperature sensors, fan inlet, and exhaust areas. If snow or ice has
collected in the fan duct, make sure that the fan turns freely. Also, make sure that the engine inlet,
inlet lip, fan, spinner, and fan exhaust duct are clear of ice or snow. If the fan does not turn freely, you
must melt the snow or ice with hot air before an engine operation.
(4) Look at the general condition of the fan spinner and fan blades, core exhaust nozzle, LPT and
external surfaces of the cowls.
(5) Do a check of the oil quantity. Make a check of the drain ports for fuel, oil and hydraulic leaks
(Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-00-790-002) . Also make sure that fuel drained from the engine does not
cause a fire.

A. Do this test:

ACTION RESULT
1.Supply the engine with fuel.
NOTE: If the fuel line or fuel equipment has been
disconnected/removed dowstream of the LP
valve before the FADEC test with engine mo-
toring, start the fuel pumps and open the LP
valve.

A.On the HYD/FUEL panel 40VU: · The OFF legends of these pushbutton switches go
· Push all the FUEL/PUMPS pushbutton switches. off.
B.Open the circuit breaker 1KC1(2) to open the LP · On the upper ECAM display unit this message
valve. comes into view:
· ENG 1(2) LP VALVE OPEN
· The single chime operates.
· The MASTER CAUT light comes on.

NOTE: If there is an engine fire, the fire shut off valve

has an override function to close the pylon LP
valve if it was open.

2.Make sure that the throttle control lever of the en-

gine 1(2) is in the idle stop position (zero on the
graduated sector).
3.On the ENG panel 115VU:
· Set the ENG/MODE/CRANK/NORM/IGN/START On the lower ECAM display unit:
selector switch to CRANK. · The ENGINE page comes into view.
· Make sure that the available air pressure is
between 25 psi (1.7 bar) and 55 psi (3.8 bar).
· Make sure that the quantity of oil in the oil tank of
the engine 1(2) is correct.
· If necessary, fill the oil tank (Ref. AMM TASK 12-
13-79-610-002) (Ref. AMM TASK 12-13-79-610-

ACTION RESULT
· Push the ENG/MAN START/1(2) pushbutton
switch.
On the lower ECAM display unit, on the ENGINE
page:
· The symbol for the starter valve is in the open pos-
ition.
5.Motor the engine as long as it is necessary (in line
with the starter limits as given below).
6.Make sure that:
· The engine operates.
· The oil pressure indication is positive.

NOTE: During cold weather, large oil pressure

surges can occur.

NOTE: A pressure relief valve in the lubrication unit

limits the oil pressure to 305 psi (21 bar).

NOTE: The oil level in the oil tank can go down by

1.6 USgal (6 l) during start.

NOTE: If a starter air pressure is used that is less

than the recommended quantity, slow N2
acceleration and subsequent rpm stop can
occur.

NOTE: Make sure that you do not go over the

starter limits that follow:
- no engagement of the starter when the
core speed is above 20 percent.
- the acceptable duty cycles can be per-
formed by using one the three following
procedures:
- 4 consecutive cycles, each of 2
minutes duration with a 20 second
rest between 2 consecutive attempts.
After 4 cycles, wait 15 minutes to allow
starter to cool before you try a new start
or motoring.
- one 5 minute cycle followed by a cool-
ing period of 2 minutes after the first
motoring and a 10 minutes interval
between the following ones.
After 2 minutes, the fault message
"starter time exceeded" appears. Con-
tinue normal operation, ignore it.
- one 15 minute cycle followed by a 15
minute cooling period before you try a
new start or motoring.
It is recommended to use the 15 minute
cycle only for cooling the engine to do a
borescope inspection.
