HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE
ON VERTICAL FORMS
z Freshly poured concrete exerts an equal
pressure in all directions just like water.
z The intensity of this pressure at any point is
equal to the depth of concrete poured
multiplied with its density.
z As soon as the concrete starts setting, the
lateral pressure on the side walls starts
reducing.
z The factors given on the next slide influence
the maximum lateral pressure acting on the
vertical forms.

d
Pmax = 3R + + 25 kN / m 2

Maximum value of d = 500 mm
γ c Rk
Pmax = + 15 kN / m 2

Where k is a correction factor for the concrete
temperature and workability and its value is
given in Table 15.1.
Prof. Dr. Zahid Ahmad Siddiqi
Example 15.1:
Solution:
The maximum hydrostatic pressure produced
by the wet concrete is the minimum of the
following three:
From Table 15.1, k = 1.60
Prof. Dr. Zahid Ahmad Siddiqi
γ H
Pmax = c + 10 kN / m 2
100
2400 × 4
= + 10 = 106.0 kN / m 2
100
d
Pmax = 3R + + 25 kN / m 2
10
400
= 3× 4 + + 25 = 77.0 kN / m 2
10
γ Rk
Pmax = c + 15 kN / m 2
100
2400 × 4 × 1.60
= + 15 = 138.6 kN / m 2
100
∴ Pmax = 77 kN/m2
