This brochure will provide you with important information regarding admission to a
bachelor degree program or diploma degree program of study on the basis of
international academic qualifications.

1. Fields of study

The JKU Linz offers a range of academic degree programs in the fields of Medicine,
Natural Sciences, Engineering, Education, Social Sciences, Business and Law. More

2. Admission requirements for degree-seeking applicants with international


academic qualifications

2.1. Enrollment Procedure

Students wishing to enroll in certain bachelor degree programs have to do an additional


enrollment procedure. For detailed information about the enrollment procedure, please

2.2. Applying for Admission

Applicants with international (non-Austrian) academic qualifications and certification


seeking admission to the Johannes Kepler University must submit following
documents:
• completed and signed form „application for admission“

• high school diploma and transcript of records

• if applicable, proof of completed university qualifying examinations

• if applicable, proof of a completed study program (grades awarded,


diploma/degree certificate)

• current confirmation (not older than three months), issued by a recognized


university in the country where the secondary school was finished, which confirms
that the applicant is eligible to start the same or a similar bachelor or diploma
degree program there (directly and without any entrance examinations)
(This does NOT have to be handed in if the applicant’s citizenship is from an
EU or EEA country!)

• passport copy, including a photo and a signature


(in certain cases, a certified copy will also be required)
• proof of proficiency in German for German-language academic degree programs
(see 2.5.) or proof of proficiency in English for English-language academic degree
programs

Due to current restrictions caused by Covid19 applications including documents can


be filed electronically via e-mail for now (admission@jku.at). Please make sure to
enclose only one pdf with all the required documents to your e-mail. You will receive a
confirmation of reception from the admissions office via e-mail. In case you wish to add
missing documents, please reply to this confirmation of reception without exception.

The application form must be filled out personally and signed by the applicant
and under no circumstances by another person. Applications prepared by agencies
are prohibited by law and will not be accepted.

2.3. German Translations

Foreign language documents (if not issued in German or English) must be submitted
along with a German translation issued by a Translator/Interpreter certified in
Austria. If the documents have been translated outside of Austria, applicants must
submit documents using the same verification procedure as with other foreign
documents (see 2.4.).

2.4. Document Authentication and Verification

International documents have to be authenticated by the responsible authorities in the


most cases.

Bilateral Agreements
Due to bilateral agreements verifying the authenticity of documents, the submission of
international documents as mentioned above does not apply to documents issued from
the following countries (however, documents must be submitted as original or as a
notarized, verified copy):

Hague Apostille Agreement
Documents issues by members states that have signed the Hague Apostille
Agreement must be verified with an “APOSTILLE” issued by the respective domestic
authorities of the issuing country. The documents and the Apostille must be submitted

Complete Verification and Authentication
If there is no bilateral agreement between Austria and the applicant’s home country –
meaning not included in the list above – all submitted documentation must be verified
for its authenticity by the responsible authorities of the issuing country
(Ministry of Foreign Affairs) as well as the Austrian authorities located in the issuing
country (Austrian Embassy/Consulate). The documents must be submitted in
original.

2.5. Language Skills

If applying as a degree-seeking student for an academic degree program in German,


please provide proof of language proficiency in German.

Applicants are required to submit proof of proficiency in German at minimum A2 level


under the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages as outlined by
the European Council to be admitted as a non-regular student. For the regular study
program, students need to provide German proficiency at B2 or C1 level, depending
on the study program.

If applicants are interested in English taught study programs, proof of language


proficiency in English is required. Depending on the study program, the required level
needs to be minimum B2 or C1.

2.6. Tuition Fees

Students enrolled as regular students, who are citizens of an EU or EEA country


are not subject to paying tuition fees during the minimum length of the degree program
(+ two additional semester). However, the payment of the Austria Student Union fee
in the amount of € 20,20 per semester is mandatory.

Regular students who are NOT from an EU or EEA country are subject to paying
tuition fees in the amount of € 726,72 per semester, plus the mandatory Austrian
Student Union fee of € 20,20.

Students enrolled with the status non-degree student (“außerordentliche/r


Studierende/r”) are subject to paying tuition fees despite bilateral agreements with the
applicant’s home country. Tuition fees are € 363,36 per semester, plus the
mandatory Austrian Student Union fee of € 20,20.

Students who are required to pay tuition fees have to do this within the general
admission period. Tuition fees paid during the grace period until November 30th
regarding the winter semester and until April 30th regarding the summer semester) will
be raised by 10%.

!!! IMPORTANT !!!

Admission to studies will be null and void if applicants do not pay the
required tuition fees (in compliance with personal notification), plus/or the
mandatory Austrian Student Union fee on time!

3. General Information

3.1. Procedures

After submitting all required documents to the Admissions Office at the Johannes
Kepler University Linz, the application will be reviewed according to content and formal
criteria. There is no application fee. Please note that applications prepared by agencies
are prohibited by law and will not be accepted. You will be notified of admission by
letter.

If your application is approved, you will receive an acceptance letter which could also
require taking supplementary examination(s). If your first language is not German and
you are unable to submit sufficient proof of proficiency in German in order to be
admitted to a regular study program, the acceptance letter will list any supplementary
examination(s) you will be required to take and pass.

If your university entrance qualifications (school leaving certificate) are deemed


incomparable to an Austrian school-leaving certificate, depending on your major you
may be required to take additional supplementary examinations.

If you are required to take supplementary examinations, you will be enrolled in a


preparation program until you have passed the required examinations. Students who
are not subject to supplementary examinations will be admitted to the regular study
program.

To register in person, please come to the Admissions Office during the corresponding
admission period. Please bring the following documents with you:

• valid passport
• acceptance Letter (in the original)
• if applicable, a social insurance number (such as your Austrian E-card)
• confirmation of registration: https://www.jku.at/en/degree-programs/prospective-
students/start-your-studies/registration
• if applicable, documents if transferring from another Austrian university

Once all admission procedures have been completed, students will receive a student
ID card, the JKU Card (https://www.jku.at/en/degree-programs/prospective-
students/start-your-studies/get-your-jku-card/).

Students will also be required to pay any tuition fees (see 2.6) by the end of the
corresponding grace period (https://www.jku.at/en/studying/studies-from-a-z/dates-
deadline/).

Students will also be eligible to register for courses during the course registration
period (https://www.jku.at/en/studying/studies-from-a-z/dates-deadline/).

3.2. The Academic Year

The winter semester starts at October 1st and concludes at February 28th. The summer
semester starts at March 1st and concludes at September 30th.
Students may register for classes via KUSSS by going to www.kusss.jku.at. The
course registration takes place before the beginning of each semester
(https://www.jku.at/en/studying/studies-from-a-z/dates-deadline/).

3.3. Grants and Scholarships

Austrian universities do not have the authority to award grants and scholarships to
students. International students must apply for scholarships directly at an official
Austrian Agency (Embassy or Consulate located in the applicant’s home country), to
then be submitted to the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy
for consideration and review. Scholarships are awarded in only very few cases and
only under certain conditions and circumstances. Austrian students can get information
on scholarships and grants at the Study Grant Authority.

3.4. Visa Regulations

To legally enter Austria, international students who are not EU or EEA citizens will
require a valid visa. Moreover, these students will need to apply for a residence permit.
For more information regarding current visa and residence laws, please contact the
Austrian Embassy or Consulate in your home country.

3.5. Health Insurance

Students who live and study in Austria but are not insured in Austria or in another EU
country may opt to purchase special student health insurance coverage (= self-
insurance) valid in Austria during their stay.

3.6. Accommodations

We strongly advise students to secure accommodations in Linz before studies begin.


The JKU Linz does not make accommodation arrangements for international students.
