Argumentations About The Effects of Ciu Sale for Sukoharjo
Since in the Dutch colonial era, Sukoharjo has been known as the city of Ciu. In
Sukoharjo, there was a sub-district that called Bekonang, that has been known as the central
producer of Ciu. Ciu Bekonang, the public said, is liquor produced from sugar cane drops or
badeg distillation for five days to seven days. The alcohol content in ciu is around 25 per
cent to 35 per cent. Ciu is freely sold by the surrounding community in grocery stalls in an
area of 321 hectares. The existence of Ciu makes Bekonang known to the community in the
Sukoharjo and surrounding areas. The existence of Ciu makes Bekonang known to the
community in the Sukoharjo and surrounding areas. Currently, the number of artisans who
produce Ciu is more than those who produce alcohol. The comparison is 70:30. The
production of Ciu per craftsman is around 90-100 litres per day. For outside of Mojolaban,
alcohol and ciu are also produced in Polokarto District. At least, Ciu is produced in the
villages of Ngombakan, Bugel, Bakalan, and Karangwuni. This activity brings many effects
such as increasing regional revenue, bringing a lot of employment oportunities, and being
the icon of Sukoharjo. I disagree with those effects because ; (1) prohibition on selling ciu (2)
making people lazy for doing another job (3) making the name ‘Sukoharjo’ become worse.

The first reason is prohibition on selling ciu. Prohibition of traders and people selling
this Ciu contained in articles 17 and 18. While the matter of sanctions has been explained in
article 32. In this draft law, sanctions are quite severe, both imprisonment and fines. The
maximum penalty for the seller is IDR 50 million. Meanwhile, they can be put in jail with a
maximum sentence of 6 months. Initially, the local government only gave permission to
produce alcohol however, not all crafters want to do this and choose CIU production
because it is more profitable. law enforcement officers carry out intensive action. Alcoholic
raids, especially ciu, are routinely held because they are also sent outside the area and
become the basis for mixed alcohol. If they are caught, the evidence will be destroyed and
The seller or dealer who was hit by the raid will also be processed by law.
The second reason is it makes people lazy for doing another job. Selling ciu is
forbidden because ciu is alchoholic drink that can lead people to get many bad effects such
as brain disorders, liver disorders, lung damage, even death. People are continously
breaking up the law because they want a shortcut to get a lot of money. Although there are
regulations, many of them don’t concern about that. In the past 10 years, the number of
ethanol or alcohol crafters in Bekonang Village increased significantly. Currently, the
number of alcoholic crafters is around 115-130 people. Most of them interested in
producing ciu because of its large profits. In this era they should get another job that better
than producing ciu because there are a lot of employment opportunities out there that
doesn’t break the law.

The third reason is it makes the name ‘Sukoharjo’ become worse.

Sukoharjo has been known as a city of herbal medicine, but not a few people also have
known Sukoharjo as Ciu City. this can be negatif effect for sukoharjo because ciu has been
known as a forbbiden beverage. When we hear about ciu we must be thinking about
something negatif isn’t it? It’s because the bad connotation of ciu. Although the original
place of ciu production is in Bekonang but Sukoharjo still get the bad name effect because
actually Bekonang is a pace inside Sukoharjo regency.

In conclusion ciu production in Bekonang affects several things in Sukoharjo even it

affects Sukoharjo itself. I disagree with the positive effects that have been mentioned in the
first paragraph because ciu production and sale will mainly bring negative effects for
Sukoharjo.
