Basic Concepts and Core Competencies of Computer
System Servicing
1. Knowledge in technical specifications – is the most
basic concept that one must know before engaging into
a CHS business. This is concerned with knowing how
to check the qualities of a hardware component. This is
vital in determining the components that will be needed
based on specific job requirements.
2. Networking theories – refers to the knowledge
needed to understand how a computer network works.
Without these theories, accomplishing a task that
requires the interconnection of computer systems will
be hard or even impossible to do. File and resource
sharing is one of the basic networking theories.
3. Installation of computer systems and networks – a
competency required when putting together the
hardware components needed in a computer system or
networks. This includes the actual handling and
mounting of components needed to accomplish a task.
4. Configuration of computer systems and networks –
is a skill needed once the installation has been
completed. Configuring the installed computer systems
and networks is needed so that they will function
specifically for the job requirements they are designed
to complete. Failure to properly configure a computer
system or network will result in erroneous or incomplete
outputs.
5. Diagnosing and troubleshooting of computer
systems and networks –is a proficiency concerned
with checking the integrity of computer systems and
networks by running a series of physical and software
testing. Diagnosing means determining any faults while
troubleshooting is applying the appropriate actions to
correct the discovered faults so that proper operations
can resume.
6. Maintaining of computer systems and networks – is
a know-how that refers to the needs to keep the
computer systems in proper operating conditions at all
times. It can be preventive, one in which maintenance
is conducted even when no fault has been detected
yet; or reactive, one in which maintenance procedures
are conducted when faults are already experienced.

Learning Experiences:
1. Mr. Tucker opened a computer shop without any
knowledge of the basic concepts of CSS. What will be
the success rate of his business? Why?
