connector (at the top of BTS3812E cabinet) may be 20 W or 40 W when each
MTRU supports a single carrier. It can also be 15 W or 20 W when each MTRU
supports two carriers. BTS3812E supports special configurations under which the
number of carriers and transmit power can vary from sector to sector.
2) The transmit diversity mode is supported to enhance downlink demodulation
gains.
3) The cell breathing function is supported and the maximum cell breath gain
adjustment range is equal to or smaller than 10 dB.
4) RRU(Radio Remote Unit) connection is supported to deal with coverage in some
special regions.
5) The maximum search capability of baseband is 180 km. The maximum access
search radius is configurable.
6) The 1-way receiver sensitivity is better than –125 dBm.
7) The NodeB tower mounted amplifier module (TMA, optional) is supported. The
TMA can compensate for feeder loss. The TMA gain is 24dB or 12 dB.
8) Multiple receive diversity modes are supported, including 2-way receiver diversity,

the following aspects.

I. Smooth Evolution of Protocol Releases

The present BTS3812E is based on 3GPP R4/R5 protocol releases. It supports smooth
evolution to later 3GPP protocol release, for example, multimedia broadcast and
multicast service (MBMS) and high speed uplink packet access (HSUPA).
z To support MBMS, you only need to upgrade the software loaded to BTS3812E.
z To support HSUPA, you only need to add a HSUPA-supportive UL processing
board or replace the existing board with such a board, and then upgrade the
software loaded to BTS3812E.
See the following description of MBMS and HSUPA.
z MBMS: It is a point-to-multipoint technology introduced to WCDMA R6 release.
This technology can save resources over the air interface by broadcasting
multimedia services to the UEs of a cell over common channels or by sending
multicast services subscribed by UEs of a cell.
z HSUPA: It is a technology introduced to WCDMA R6 release, serving as a means
to enhance UL packet service processing capability. Specific techniques related to
HSUPA include 2ms frame, HARQ, and NodeB scheduling. HSUPA can enhance

Huawei Technologies Proprietary

2-3
Technical Manual – System Description
BTS3812E WCDMA NodeB Chapter 2 Key Benefits

system capacity by 50% to 70% and reduce time delay in packet services by 20%
to 55%. A single subscriber can enhance service rate by 50%.

II. Enhanced Functions and Technologies

1) The present BTS3812E supports three transmission modes, that is, E1, T1, and
STM-1. It will be able to support more transmission modes such as E3, T3, and
Ethernet.
2) Later versions of BTS3812E can be enhanced by some technologies, including:
z Smart antenna (SA): It performs formation and shaping for the received and
transmitted beams of the NodeB according to the spatial characteristics of signal
transmission and the digital signal processing technology. It can reduce
interference, multiply capacity, broaden coverage, enhance communication
quality and decrease costs of operators.
z Multi-user detection (MUD): Perform combined detection for multiple users to
limit the multiple access interference. It is a good solution to the near-far problem.
The technology lowers the requirements for power control precision, and therefore
can make better use of the spectrum resources and enhance system capacity and
coverage.

Huawei Technologies Proprietary

4-2
Technical Manual – System Description
BTS3812E WCDMA NodeB Chapter 4 Services and Functions

z Soft handover
z Softer handover
z Hard handover

I. Soft Handover

Soft handover takes place between intra-frequency neighboring cells within the same
UTRAN. Handover between intra-frequency neighboring cells of the same NodeB
might be soft handover or softer handover.

II. Softer Handover

Softer handover, a special kind of soft handover, takes place between intra-frequency
neighboring cells that belong to neighboring sectors of the same NodeB. During softer
handover, the UE sets up radio links with two cells of the same NodeB. In this case, the
NodeB merges the diversity signals the two cells receive from the UE. Generally the
communication quality in softer handover is better than that in soft handover.

III. Hard Handover

BTS3812E supports the following kinds of hard handover:

z Intra-frequency hard handover: takes place between intra-frequency cells under
RNCs not interconnected through the Iur interface
z Inter-frequency handover: takes place between cells at different frequencies
z Inter-core network (CN) handover
z Inter-system handover: BTS3812E supports seamless handover of dual-band
UEs between GSM and WCDMA systems.

4.4 Diversity

Huawei Technologies Proprietary

5-1
Technical Manual – System Description
BTS3812E WCDMA NodeB Chapter 5 Operation and Maintenance

z Near end maintenance: The maintenance engineer connects an LMT to

BTS3812E through a network cable and logs in to the NodeB to perform
maintenance.
z Far end maintenance: BTS3812E is generally seated in an unattended room.
The maintenance engineer logs in to BTS3812E over the IPoA channel to perform
maintenance on the NodeB through LMT or M2000.
z Automatic setup of default maintenance channel: When no data configuration
file is loaded to NodeB, the default IPoA maintenance channel can be
automatically set up between RNC and NodeB. Generally, BTS3812E only has
software loaded rather than data configuration file after hardware installation. With
this function, the maintenance personnel can load data and programs to the
NodeB at the far end. The automatic setup function of default maintenance
channel decreases the operation and maintenance costs and enhances network
maintainability and maintenance quality.

5.2 O&M Functions

BTS3812E puts great emphasis on operator-specific requirements in operation and

maintenance and offers the following effective functions.

I. Security Management

BTS3812E provides powerful security management functions to effectively manage

and control the system by authorizing maintenance engineers with layered operation
rights.

II. Alarm Management

and abnormality in real time. It can display alarm information and alarm handling
suggestions on the alarm management system of LMT or M2000. The alarm
management system of M2000 can connect to an alarm box through a serial port, and
supports audible and visible alarms. Customers may subscribe some specified alarms
and forward them to the handsets or pagers of maintenance engineers. The engineers
then can handle the faults and abnormalities as quick as possible.

III. Data Configuration

The O&M system of BTS3812E allows addition, deletion, modification and consistency
check of the NodeB data. It supports both online and offline data configurations.
z For online data configuration, the modified data takes effect at once.

Huawei Technologies Proprietary

5-3
Technical Manual – System Description
BTS3812E WCDMA NodeB Chapter 6 Reliability

Chapter 6 Reliability

6.1 System Reliability

BTS3812E is designed after overall analysis on system reliability. BTS3812E adopts

the following methods to enhance system maintainability:
z Active/standby mode
z load-sharing
z Redundant configuration
z Optimized fault detection of boards and system
z Optimized fault separation

I. Redundancy

Baseband boards (HULP and HDLP) adopt the resource pool architecture and work in
N+1 backup mode. Failure in part of the boards does not affect normal operation of the
NodeB. In addition, baseband processing capability is not affected when redundant
boards are configured.

The Iub interface boards can work in load-sharing mode. When a service link is broken
and the transmission capability deteriorates, the overloaded or faulty board can
transfer partial or all load to other available boards or links.

II. Active/Standby Mode

NBBI supports active and standby modes.

III. System Maintainability

BTS3812E can automatically detect and diagnose faults in hardware or software, and
report them as alarms. It can record and report fault information. It can also detect
environmental status and report the abnormality in time.

6.2 Hardware Reliability

I. Prevention against Mistakenly Inserted Boards

When a functional board is inserted into a wrong slot, it cannot get into full contact with
the backplane. This prevents the equipment from damage.

Huawei Technologies Proprietary

6-1
Technical Manual – System Description
BTS3812E WCDMA NodeB Chapter 6 Reliability

II. Speed Control and Redundancy Design of Fan Box

With system dissipation guaranteed, fan speed can be controlled to reduce equipment
noise and fan abrasion. In this way, both the service life and reliability of the heat
dissipation system can be greatly enhanced.

The redundancy design of the fan box ensures normal operation of the system even if
one of the fans gets faulty. Therefore, the system anti-fault capability and the system
reliability are enhanced.

III. Protection against Overtemperature and Over-Excitation of MTRU

When the temperature exceeds the specified limit, the system automatically lowers the
rated output power of MTRU or shuts down the MTRU and reports related alarms. In
this way, MTRU is under protection. Its service life and reliability cannot be affected.

MTRU also provides:

z Over-excitation protection
z Over reflected power protection

IV. Reliability Design for Power Supply

z The –48V input power supply is kept under detection. When the power voltage is
too low or too high, BTS3812E reports an alarm.
z The power supply has the lightning protection function and the protection function
against voltage dips and sags.
z BTS3812E provides the power failure protection for programs and data.
z The boards provide over-voltage, overcurrent and reverse-polarity-connection
protection.

6.3 Software Reliability

Software reliability is reflected in the powerful capability of error tolerance. The whole
system will not corrupt when the software fails. That is, the system has self-healing
capability. Error tolerance of BTS3812E is shown in the following aspects:

I. Regular Check on Key Resources

Seizure check is conducted on various software resources in the system. If resource

hang-up occurs due to software abnormality, it lasts only a short time because the
check mechanism can ensure the release of hung-up resources and the output of
related logs and alarms.

Huawei Technologies Proprietary

6-2
Technical Manual – System Description
BTS3812E WCDMA NodeB Chapter 6 Reliability

II. Task Monitoring

When the software is active, the task monitoring function can monitor any possible fault
in software or hardware. In addition, the detected fault can be reported. Task status and
system abnormalities can be monitored.

III. Storage Protection

The software system adopts the segment/page protection mechanism of CPU memory
management unit (MMU), implementing storage protection of codes and important data
segments.

IV. Data Check

The system is able to perform regular or event-driven check on data consistency,

restore the data consistency selectively or preferably and output related logs and
alarms.

V. Saving Operation Log Information

The system records user operations within a certain period and saves the recorded
information to the system operation log. The operation log can be used to locate the
error or exception due to incorrect operation so that the system can be restored to
normal state.

BTS3812E WCDMA NodeB Chapter 8 Installation

Chapter 8 Installation

BTS3812E features easy installation. BTS3812E can be placed against a wall, side by
side, or back to back. Therefore, less floor space is required. Before delivery, all internal
cabling of the NodeB is installed and debugged to meet customers’ requirements. The
field installation personnel only need to fix the cabinet, insert the boards, install the
external cables and download the data configuration file.

BTS3812E also facilitates equipment maintenance and future expansion. In the NodeB,
the cables supports frontal accessibility, specifically, cables connecting BTS3812E
baseband subrack and MTRU and those between MTRUs and MAFUs.

The external cables of BTS3812E are easy to install. Ports for the antenna jumpers,
power cables, transmission cables, and signal cables are all routed at the top of the
cabinet with corresponding silk-screens.

Automatic setup of default maintenance channel is supported. When no data

configuration file is loaded to NodeB, the default IPoA maintenance channel can be
automatically set up between RNC and NodeB. Generally, BTS3812E only has
software loaded rather than data configuration file after hardware installation. With this
function, the maintenance personnel can load data and programs to the NodeB at the
far end. The automatic setup function of default maintenance channel decreases the
operation and maintenance costs and enhances network maintainability and
maintenance quality.

BTS3812E features easier and faster installation of both software and hardware. This
ensures faster network deployment and rollout.
