CHAPTER ONE
Who Am I
"
A person’s value isn’t measured by awards, wealth, status , sexual orientation nor his or her race
but by empathy and the quality of service to others
- Komana Tembo -.
"
How many times have you ever asked yourself, ‘Who am I ?’ Am I a father or mother, a husband or a wife, a friend, a doctor, a passenger or a patient? The unhidden truth is that you are a son/daughter because you have a father/mother. You are a husband because you have a wife, a mother because you have children and a family to take care of. An explorer because you are on a journey. All your identities, everything you believe yourself to be, are all dependent on something else. So then, who are you? A father, a husband or a traveler?
By not knowing the answer to the question, 'Who am I?,' you keep on creating new identities of yourself, consequently going farther away from your true Self. All the suffering in life is because of not knowing your identity. Until you realize your true Self, you’ll believe yourself to be the same. that has been given and entitled to you.
So who are you? In actuality, you are a perpetual Soul. For an infinite past, the Soul has been hidden beneath a veil of ignorance. Due to this, we have been unable to experience the true Self.
No one really has any suspicions or doubts regarding the issue of, ‘Who am I?’ However, that suspicion does not arise in the first place! On the contrary, we strengthen our ignorance of our identity and because of that, anger-pride-attachment-greed remains intact. One has held on to the non-truth, this has caused an awareness of this non-truth to be the truth. If one hangs on to the non-truth for a long period, that non-truth becomes the truth for him. If the non-truth becomes deeply ingrained in his belief, it becomes the truth and then he will never come to the realization that it is the non-truth; it will always be the truth for him.
Hence, anger-pride-attachment-greediness will go away if suspicions about ones identity arises, but such suspicions never go. How would they? Who would help you in doing so? Man has been suspicion-free about his real identity for endless past lives, who can create suspicion in this matter? Whatever name one has been given in any life, he or she assumed it to be the truth. Suspicion has
