LESSON PLAN

GEOGRAPHY

Topic: Mineral resources in Poland.


Date: 15th October 2019
The topic is provided for two 45-minute lessons.

Lesson aims:
The student knows:
- mineral resources extracted in Poland;
- names of raw materials in English;
- raw materials found in the immediate area;

The student explains:


- distribution of raw materials on the physical map of Poland:
- distribution of raw materials according to their intended use;

The student can:


- discuss the method of extracting raw materials, taking into account environmental hazards;
- demonstrate the impact of the exploitation of raw materials on the level of groundwater and
desertification of the region;
- argue their own position on the construction of a zinc and lead ore mine in the immediate area;

Introductory Phase:
1. Organizational activities.
2. The teacher introduces the class to the topic of the lesson. Attachment 2

Main phase:
3. The teacher divides students into groups of four.
4. Group members choose a leader who then receives from the teacher a set of cards in the form of
puzzles to solve. Attachment 1
5. The teacher asks students to open envelopes in which rectangles with pictures and captions in
English are prepared. Together with the whole class, he tries to put on the board (students in their
positions) the header of the diagram illustrating the distribution of raw materials occurring in Poland.
At the same time, he explains individual names when translating from English to Polish.
6. Students try to translate or guess based on the photo, the names of individual raw materials presented
in the attachments.
7. The students' task is to correctly classify individual cards into the group of raw materials.
8. Summary of this part of the lesson: the teacher rewrites the names of natural resources on the board
(or uses the appropriate slide in the presentation). He asks students to write a note in a notebook.
9. The teacher and students analyze the map showing the distribution of raw materials in Poland. He
especially pays attention to raw materials occurring near Zawiercie.
10. Analysis of the map showing the distribution of zinc and lead deposits under the city of Zawiercie.
11. Discussion of the pros and cons of the localed mine, and in particular its impact on groundwater
level (slide 7), threat of mining damage (slide 8) and changes in air and water quality in the region.

Summary phase:
12. The students together with the teacher analyze the pros and cons of the mine, and each of them has
the task to vote in support or opposition to the events.
13. Homework for volunteers: Write a leaflet expressing your support or opposition to building a mine
in Zawiercie.
