Bumble Bee Sanctuary

Year 5

There has been a massive hotel that is under construction and with the construction it has
taken out a huge chunk of flowers. There are not enough flowers for the bees to use. There
needs to be a bee sanctuary set in place. Year 5’s can you help?

Your Task
Your task is that you are in small groups and
need to create a bee sanctuary that is sustainable
and is able to help the plants and flowers to grow
for the bees to collect the pollen.
This sanctuary needs to block off access to the
public
but is still visible for everyone to see and the
weather
can still reach.

Generate Your Ideas

You need to research your ideas on the
structure of the sanctuary, looking at
diagrams of sanctuary’s and different
types of sanctuary’s.
You need to then look at what materials
would work best to be durable in all
forms of weather and is sturdy enough
to stay up on its own.

Project Specification
Students must work collaboratively in their groups. The sanctuary must be able to
stand up on its own and must be able to fit three different types of flowers.
Project Management
Lessons 1 Students will be introduced to the design brief and will be
researching different types of plant sanctuary’s, how they can
be sustainable, how there is a no public access and how they
are durable during the different weather seasons.

Lesson 2 Students will be continuing on with their research but will be

researching how different sanctuary’s stand up on their own and what
sort or sustainable materials they can be made of.

Lesson 3 Students will now have their ideas and will be beginning their
production with their group, but first students must figure out a
production process and a plan on what job roles each group member
will have.

Lesson 4 Students will continue on their product making sure they are staying on
track with time. Students will also need to trial and error with how the
sanctuary can stand up on its own with a secure base.

Lesson 5 Students will be finishing and finalising off all the aspects of the
design brief and still maintaining the trial and error process, alongside
keeping in mind the requirements that the sanctuary needs to have and
be able to do.

Lesson 6 Students in their groups will be presenting their product to the class
explaining how their sanctuary can be durable during all season and
what sustainable materials it is made out of. Student’s product must be
able to stand up on its own and must create a no public access.

Evaluation
The sanctuary must be able to stand up on its own and must be able to be durable during
rain and sunshine.

Presentation
Students are to present their product to the class and explain why these chose the
materials they chose, what is sustainable about it and how does it block off access to
the public, how it is visible for everyone to see and how the weather can still reach
it.
