Syllabus Design
➢ One of the most widely used syllabus models is one that integrates aspect of all three, a
variable focus (Allen, 1984) or proportional (Yalden, 1987).
➢ Allen’s three components in the variable focus syllabus which includes all levels, all the time,
but the emphasis changes at different stages of learning:
___Office hours.
___Are they at a place and time that is convenient to both you and your students?
___Have you met the department’s expectations for number of office hours per week?
___Are you able to be flexible, according to student need (ex: a big assignment is coming due; a student
can’t make your regular hours)?
___Attendance.
___Will you grade for attendance?
___How will you keep records?
___Will students be able to make up missed days?
___How late may a student come and still be counted?
___Have you made a policy about medical absences (number permitted; types of documentation
required)?
___Late work.
___Will there be penalties for late work? How severe. and how administered?
___Statements of plagiarism
___Have you stated your I the department’s policy on your syllabus?
___Have you broken lengthier assignments down into steps to minimize plagiarism?
___Availability of readings.
___Where should students buy the class texts? Are there enough copies on the shell?
___Where should students pick up the course reader?
___At which libraries have you placed materials on reserve?
___Grade Determination
___Have you indicated on your syllabus how the final grade for your course will be determined either in
percentages or accumulation of points?
