Donning, Doffing: Spotters Checklist Information Sheet


The role of spotter may include:
• Monitoring and documenting in the log all staff and visitor entry and exit from an infected patient’s room
• Checking of donning and doffing of personal protective equipment (PPE)
• Ensuring transmission-based precautions (TBP) are adhered to
• Alerting staff to breaches in infection control procedure and providing assistance

Definitions
Clinically ill: severe symptoms suggestive of pneumonia, e.g. fever, breathing difficulty, or frequent, severe or
productive coughing episodes or critically ill
Aerosol Generating Procedures (AGPs): nasopharyngeal aspirate, endotracheal intubation, nebulized medication
administration, airway suctioning, bronchoscopy, diagnostic sputum induction, positive pressure ventilation via facemask
Donning Checklist 
Order of Donning
Bare below the elbows
1. Hand Hygiene Hand hygiene attended
2. Gown Don gown and ensure it is tied and covers the staff members back if able
3. Mask Don correct mask and fit check if required
4. Goggles • Airborne: P2/N95 mask for clinically ill patients (definition above), suspected or
5. Hand Hygiene confirmed with Aerosol Generating Procedures (definition above) Fit check required
6. Gloves • Droplet: Surgical mask for suspected or confirmed and clinically well patients.
Fit test not required
Don Goggles. Staff with glasses must wear goggles over glasses
Hand hygiene attended
Don gloves
Enter room, if door handle or curtains are touched remove gloves, attend hand hygiene and
reapply gloves
Attend to patient needs
Staff must remove gloves, attend to hand hygiene and redon gloves while in the patient’s
room as per normal 5 moments of hand hygiene principles
Doffing Checklist 
Order of Doffing
Inside the patient room/Ante room (If available)
1. Gloves Doff gloves
2. Hand Hygiene Hand hygiene attended
3. Gown Doff gown
4. Hand Hygiene Hand hygiene attended
5. Exit Room Exit room or remain in ante room (if available)
6. Hand Hygiene Hand hygiene attended
7. Goggles Doff goggles
8. Hand Hygiene Hand hygiene attended
9. Mask Doff mask- do not touch the front of the mask
10. Hand Hygiene Hand hygiene attended
If exiting an anteroom hand hygiene must be attended after exiting
Clean any equipment removed from patient’s room
Breach Examples
• Missed hand hygiene
• Not wearing all necessary PPE, Incorrect order of donning or doffing
• WOW’s taken into rooms or doorway of rooms, not cleaning equipment e.g. stethoscope, BGL machine
