This course is intended for undergraduates, who have little or no background in
networking. It introduces the concepts clearly first. And the explanation of how the underlying
communication component works, fundamental of packet switching, basic principles of various
Internet protocols including Protocols such as IP, TCP, ICMP, ARP etc. will be covered. Finally,
it examines network applications. The coverage is quite broad. It includes a discussion of both
general principles and specific applications on client-server model, socket API, DNS, e-mail file
transfer, Web browsing. The course involves lecture, reading/discussion and homework. The
important part of this lecture is the “Practice”. It includes network programing on various
aspects of protocols, applications, TCP/IP and router handling.
