PHILIPPINE LITERATURE IN MIDDLE PERIOD

It is said that Philippine’s Literature is a combination of its rich past and diversity.

It happened that even before the colonizers came, our country already had our kind of

literature. This period has demonstrated the rapid improvement of Philippine literature in

English especially in the areas of essay. Writers of essay had stressed social consciousness

and awareness. We had been discussing about the Philippine Literature for weeks now, if

we may notice despite all the sacrifices and hardships of our ancestors had exerted for our

country, many of us are still ungrateful and do not know to value the idea that we had been

freed by those courageous people in the past. They even offered their lives for us. As we can

see, Philippine literature had been interrupted in its development when we were conquered

by other countries. Every time that we discuss about the different period of the past, I

realize that Philippine Literature and our culture can be traced by how the writers of those

times handed down to us their thoughts through writings. It somehow has given us more

pride. The awareness of the Literature is the manifestation of our concern towards the

country. I noticed that the Literature of the Modern Period was the beginning when the

Filipino writers had added wider vision and greater depth in writing poetry in English.

This period had been affecting us since even without us knowing. The particular

thing that the period had brought to us is the fact that we learned how to fight for what we

think is just and right for us. Filipinos had learned to express their ideas freely through

their writings. In our present time, it is glaring to see that most of us do express whatever

we think and feel in all platforms. Many could have been affected and damaged by the

comings of our conquerors yet we can’t deny the fact that those bitter days had brought us

the sweetness of life that Filipinos of today are experiencing. I, personally as a Filipino will

be forever grateful of these since I am still benefitting from it. Because of them, I can be

free. I can be worthy and have the sense of being responsible for everyone’s sake. The

passage of time may not be erased in history yet I believe the memory of those battle’s

sweet success will linger forever. The success of the past is also the success of who we are

today. Their works (writers), the wars and even the endless cry of the past are the jewels of

the rich diversity in the Philippine History and Literature. All we have to do right now is to

decide on what to do with gift of NOW that was given to us by our fellow Filipinos of the

past which was their YESTERDAY’s dream..
