2. GAMBA History, Qualifications or process of
selecting GAMBA National Artists, National Artists and Their Contribution 01 ARTIST Artists are defined as people who are engaged in an activities that are related to creating art, practicing art, or demonstrating art
They are able to portray
current social issues through their art. 02 ART AGENT any professional who works on behalf of an artist to represent, promote, and sell their work. They get commissions from selling art works Art agents look for artists with unique talent and sees if the artists work is marketable 03 ART DEALER Middleman between the artists and people negotiates the prices and delivery Looks for art throughout searching and networking Could also act as a consultant for their clients 04 ART VALUER Also called an Art Appraiser Determines the value and authenticity of art pieces 05 GALLERY OWNER Also called “Gallerist” Someone who starts or buys an art gallery for the purpose of business Choose art to be presented in a gallery and when it will be shown 06 CURATOR Curators are in charge of a collection of exhibits in a museum or art gallery. Their job is to build up collections, often in specialist areas. Curators are responsible for maintaining collections by evaluating and analyzing their cultural and monetary value, conditions of preservation, and authenticity, which requires a great deal of insight and knowledge. They also interpret various works of art to find sufficient pieces to plan art exhibitions of any scale. 07 ART CONSERVATORS Art conservator strives to retain as much original material as possible and to employ the best quality materials and the most carefully considered methods available. Professional art conservators provide services related to preservation issues including display methods, archival quality storage solutions, environmental condition challenges, pest management, and packing for transportation. 08 ART HISTORIANS An art historian researches to find the history of a piece of artwork, artifact, recording their findings to share with others. Giorgio Visari Giorgio Vasari (1511-1574) was an Italian Renaissance/Mannerist artist, architect, courtier, and he was the first one to be an art historian. More importantly, Vasari is widely considered to be the father of art history. 09 ART CRITIC Art critic’s main duties is to interpret the meaning of works of art. Typically an art critic will attend a cultural event, such as an exhibition, and will then write an article about it in an interesting and engaging way. By doing so, the art critic’s objective is to popularize art to a wider audience. GAMABA NATIONAL ARTISTS History of GAMABA GAMABA also known as Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan or the National Living Award. It was institutionalized through Republic Act No. 7355 in 1992. Handled by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts. The award itself was tied with the obligation to transfer their set of skill for the new generations and promote their craft locally and internationally. The Senate of the Philippines in 2014 embraces the Senate Resolution No. (SRN) 765, that aims to acknowledge the works and accomplishment of the living treasure. The GAMABA has its roots in 1988 before it was been under the R.A. 7355, the award was called as the National Folk Artist Award that was organized by the Rotary Club of Makati-Ayala. First award was given to three artist in music and poetry in 1993. QUALIFICATION ON SELECTING GAMABA AND NATIONAL ARTISTS. GAMABA Artists Should be a Filipino citizen or group of Filipino citizen that belongs to an indigenous or traditional community here in the Philippines. Must be involved in a Filipino traditional art e.g (Folk architecture, Maritime transport, weaving, carving, literature, graphic and plastic arts, performing arts, ornaments, etc). Should be engage in the tradition and craft for at least 50 years. Produced and performed of artistic and distinctive in a superior quality. Possessed mastery of tools and materials. Should have passed and teach the skill and traditional crafts to other members of the community. If incapable to teach a candidate due to age or infirmity He/she should have been recognized as a master of their craft and admire for their character and integrity by the people of community Should have played a role in preservation and of revitalization of the tradition in the community Should have created a significant body of work and they contributed to development of their tradition and craft FIlipino National Artists Must be a Filipino citizen Their works should have a contribution in building our nation Distinctive and pioneering works or style should have impact in the future generation of artist Excellence and have mastery in their practice of art that enriches their style. Should been recognize nationally and internationally BENEFITS AND PRIVILEGES OF AN AWARDEE GAMABA Artist The award will be given by the President of the Philippines Gold plated medallion minted by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas and plaque if by group. Lifetime emolument, materials and physical benefits that can be compared to the highest officer of the land 200 thousand pesos net of taxes Lifetime monthly fixed allowance of 50 thousand (minimum) Yearly medical and hospitalization benefits worth 750 thousand (not exceeding) A state funeral expensed by the government A place of honor NATIONAL ARTIST The award will be given by the President of the Philippines Rank and title of national artist Gold plated medallion minted by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Lifetime emolument, materials and physical benefits that can be compared to the highest officer of the land 200 thousand pesos net of taxes (150k minimum) Lifetime monthly fixed allowance of 30 thousand (minimum) Life insurance, a state funeral not exceeding 500 thousand A place of honor GAMABA artist and their work Ginaw Bilog Poet, member of Hanunuo Mangyan tribe of Panaytayan, Oriental Mindoro. One of the first three awardees of GAMABA. Ambahan – a kind of poem that consist of 7 syllables lines that contains message of love and friendship. Masino Intaray He is a musician as well as a poet from Brookes point Palawan. One of the first three awardees of GAMABA Expertise in Basal(gong), kulilal(song), and bagit(Vocal Music) The basal enlivens the night long fast of drinking rice wine, bringing people together about one hundred or more guests under the roof of a kolon banwa (big house). Basal ensemble playing as an accurate and wonderful metaphor for the basic custom of sharing among the people of Palawan and the Palawan itself Sumaon Sulaiman A musician from Mamasa Pano, Maguindanao. One of the first three awardees of GAMABA. Master of playing a kutyapi – A two stringed lute. Kutyapi is one of the most difficult Filipino indigenous instrument to master Magindanao kutyapi music is rich in melodic and rhythmic invention, explores a wide range of timbres and sound phenomena. Magdalena Gamayo Textile weaver from Pinili, Ilocos Norte. Abel – is a kind of textile weaving from ilocos that uses cotton and other fibers Magdalena taught herself the traditional patterns of Binakol and Inuritan (geometric design), Kusikos (Spiral form that is similar to orange), Sinan-sabong (flowers) Eduardo Mutuc A kapampangan metal smith from Apalit, Pampanga. Known for creating religious and secular art made in silver, bronze and wood His complicated detailed retablos, mirrors, altars, and carosas are in placed in some churches and private collections. A number of these works are quite large, some works are exceeding forty feet, while some of his works were very small and yet still feature very fine and delicate craftsmanship. Alonzo Saclag A musician and dancer from Lubugan, Kalinga. He is a master in performing arts and mastered the dance patterns and movements that is also connected to their ritual dance He is also the founder of the Kalinga Budong Dance troupe that ensures to that their dance and music will be passed to the future generation. Haja Amina Appi A mat weaver from Sama Tandubas, Tawi-Tawi Their mat weaving is one of most treasured tradition of the people of Sama Their mat is made of Pandan leaves that undergoes to a lot of processes from stripping, to dying it in the sun, to dyeing of colors and to weaving. Teofilo Garcia He is a casque maker from San Quintin, Abra He is known for making hats out of vegetables He handcrafted and wear his Tambungaw hat made out of gourd Lang Dulay A T’Boli from Lake Sebu, South Cotabato Known for her T’nalak cloth designs that are made our of one abaca fibers Her T’nalak designs reflects the struggles and stories of her people Salinta Monon A Textile weaver from Bansalan, Davao Del Sur had an interest in weaving at the age of 12 and asked her mother to teach her to weave Isolates herself from her family so that she could focus on her art is at the stage where she could set her own price for her work but still admits that she still feels underpaid Federico Caballero An Epic chanter from Calinog, Iloilo Learned about epics from his mother and his grandmother Worked with Bureau of Nonformal Education, travelling from barangay to barangay, trying to convince the older folk of the necessity and benefits of learning to read and write. Uwang Ahadas Folk musician of the Yakan people He was taught to play Yakan traditional instruments at the age of Five His music resonated with the Yakan people because it was both related to the agricultural cycle and the social realm Darhata Sawabi Textile weaver from Parang, Sulu Darhata Sawabi is one of those who took the art of pis syabit making to heart. Weaving is her only possible source of income. The money she earns from making the colorful squares of cloth has enabled her to become self-sufficient and less dependent on her nephews and nieces Ambalang Austin Textile Weaver, 2016 The Yakan of Basilan are known to be among the finest weavers in the Southern Philippines. They create eye-catching and colorful textiles with tiny motifs, and possess techniques wielded only by seasoned weavers accomplishing designs restricted for utilization within a certain weaving category only. Apuh Ambalang, as she is called by her community of weavers, is highly esteemed in all of Lamitan. Her skill is deemed incomparable: she is able to bring forth all designs and actualize all textile categories typical to the Yakan. Estelita Bantilan A Mat weaver from Malapatan, Sarangani. Estelita has her nickname “Princess”. This endearment is spoken with the lightness of heart; and also with genuine respect, especially from the other mat weavers of Upper Lasang Estelita’s mat works is made of thin strips of the pandanus romblon(species of pandan) matrixed through deft fingers performing a personal rhythm, the beat seemingly guided by her eyes. Yabing Masalon Dulo A Blaan Ikat weaver from Mount Matutum, Polomolok, South Cotabato. She is recognized for her commitment for the safeguarding and promotion of the Blaan mabal tabih (ikat weaving) tradition. "Blaan Tabih: reserve dyeing (warp – ikat); Weaving (plain); Accessorizing (applique, embroidery, added objects and braiding/twining). The Blaan Tabih is a reserve-dyed plain woven abaca." - Marian Pastor Roces National artist and their work FERNANDO AMORSOLO National artist for painting. Developed the use of light in the background of the paintings JUAN F. NAKPIL National artist for architecture. Innovates the Philippine architecture and proposed that there’s such thing as Philippine achitetcure N.V.M Gonzalez National artist for literature Uses English language to express, reflect and shape Philippine culture and Philippine sensibility. Levi Celerio National artist for music and literature Known for being a leaf-player and been recognize in the Guinness book of world records Wrote over 4,000 song to his credit Fernando Amorsolo (1892-1972) Labelled the country’s first National Artist in 1972 by then President Marcos, Fernando Amorsolo is often known as the ‘Grand Old Man of Philippine Art’. (1931-1995) media painter José Joya uses bold and vibrant colours with a variety of painting techniques, layering, loose impasto strokes and controlled drips. His harmonious colours are influenced by Philippine landscapes and tropical wildlife. His mastery lies in gestural paintings, where the paint is applied spontaneously on canvas, sometimes directly out of the tube or through the use of broad strokes with brushes. BENEDICTO CABRERA (1942- PRESENT) Fondly known as ‘BenCab’ in the Philippines, Cabrera is the best-selling commercial painter of his generation and a prominent head of the local contemporary art scene. He studied under José Joya at the University of the Philippines and received his degree in Fine Arts in 1963. His fruitful career has spanned five decades, where his paintings, etchings, sketches, and prints have been exhibited across Asia, Europe, and the US. Mother and Child Vicente Silva Manansala (1910-1981) He was a Filipino artist known for his Cubist paintings and prints. Through his depictions of contemporary Filipino life, Manansala addressed issues of intimacy, poverty, and culture. His melding of social commentary with painting had a profound influence on the younger Filipino artists of his generation, such as Angelito Antonio and Manuel Baldemor. Luksong-tinik Carlos V. Francisco (1912-1969) Popularly known as "Botong", was a distinguished muralist from and best known for his historical pieces. Also known as the Poet of Angono, Rizal he single- handedly brought back the art of mural painting in Philippines. He was one of the of the modernist artists together with Galo Ocampo and Victorio Edades known as " The Triumvirate" who broke away from romanticism style of Fernando Amorsolo's Philippine Scenes.
