Title of Artwork: [you fit into me]

Artist: Margarent Atwood
Year (Created/Published/Performed): 1971
Category of Art: Poetry
Medium, if available (ex: oil on canvas, modern dance, one-act play): Free-verse

[you fit into me]

you fit into me

like a hook into an eye

a fish hook
an open eye

Elements of the Artform:

Rhyme It follows an AB-CB rhyme scheme. The second line and fourth line rhymes.
Meter There is no metrical focus provided. This is a free verse.
Line/Form The poem has two stanzas. Each stanza has four lines.
Diction The second stanza is an irony to the first stanza. The “fit in to me” statement implies
that the persona of the poem is in a satisfying relationship, but the second stanza
(“open hook” and “open eye” shows that it is not necessarily a good relationship.
Theme Atwood's poem might be viewed as paralleling the experience of many women in
intimate relationships. A love that once seemed so perfect and promising begins to
feel, for whatever reasons, like an overwhelming deception seemingly impossible to
break free of.

Characters Principal Character: Kim, Christopher "Chris" Scott, The Engineer, Ellen, John Thomas,
Thuy, Gigi Van Tranh, Tam
Setting Saigon, Vietnam
Plot tells the tragic tale of a doomed romance involving an Asian woman abandoned by
her American lover. The setting of the plot is relocated to 1970s Saigon during the
Vietnam War with a romance between a United States Marine and a seventeen-year-
old South Vietnamese bargirl.
Music "The Heat is On in Saigon", "Sun and Moon", "Last Night of the World"
(Songs)
Theme Beyond the specifics of Vietnam, the theme of Miss Saigon is corruption American
style: the central character, a Eurasian pimp called the Engineer, sings about the
"American dream" as a venal, greedy, reckless self-indulgence thrust on the world by
America's corporate conquerors.
