Recently, a worldwide has been suffered by coronavirus outbreak including our

country, Malaysia. All countries implement Movement Control Order (MCO) to prevent
the spread of coronavirus chain. Meanwhile, everything involves with economic activities
are stopped and it can be assumed that mostly countries in the recession circumstances.
Due to that, Malaysian people have been taught facing on the issue of high unemployment
rates among the local graduates. Besides of coronavirus pandemic, there is a thought that
unemployment today is caused by their own attitude. How does we agree with this
statement? I personally agree with this statement because before we suffered with
coronavirus pandemic, employment rates among local graduates in Malaysia has already
high and under control because of their own attitudes. The main reasons why I agree
is, graduates are expecting convenience where they want to wait the job close to home,
they are too choosy because wanting to work for a specific company, and being
demanding for salary, benefits or perk of the job.

First of all, if we’re talking about causes of unemployment, there many reasons that
this phenomenon occurred such as cyclical unemployment, frictional unemployment,
structural unemployment. But we want to focus on graduates attitude which is they want
the job close to their home. How does this situation happens? It starts when they finished
their studies. They don’t want to go out looking for job instead of waiting the job close to
their home. This situation is possible happen if you’re good enough with your result
during final examination or you got first class during the graduation day. However, not
all graduates are at that places. Everyone has their own sustenance but we also need to
have an effort for it. Also, this situation occurs when local graduates are passive in the
kind of looking for a job. They have to be very active to enter their field. There are many
ways to find a job but it depends on that particular graduates. To illustrate the point let’s
use fresh graduates from accounting field as an example, they are expecting convenience
that they will be offered to work directly in the accounting companies after finished the
studies. This mindset has to be changed unless as I said before if you’re good enough in
academic, it’s not possible if the company will send a formal letter to invite you to work
in their company. Therefore, this proves that one of the reasons why unemployment rates
in Malaysia among local graduates increasing year by year because of graduates attitudes
which is wanting the job close to their home instead of going out to find a job.

Secondly, being too choosy to work for a specific company is one of the reason why
unemployment occurs among the graduates. My personal view is that it’s totally true
because if graduates being picky in job selection, it takes a long to them to enter their
working field. They also cannot focus for a specific company only, meanwhile, they have
to open widely their scope to apply job for any companies regardless the amount of salary
or other benefits. Majority of them will compare of companies in the term of the salary
package, location, company working hours and office environment. I would say that there
is nothing is perfect, there is no one neither employees nor company can meet their
expectation. In such, they become too choosy about their first job, they demand high
salary, location that near to their current address, flexible working hours and no overtime
is required and comfortable job environment. It’s quite impossible to get first job with a
very comfortable job environment. If we take accounting graduates as an example, mostly
of them being picky of job selection where they just want to work in the accounting firm
only. I agree if people want to argue that accounting graduates should work in the
accounting field, but for me it doesn’t matter to work in whatever fields because it will
give them experience soon after if they want to apply another job. This clearly proves that
graduates attitude which is being choosy in job selection is a reason of unemployment.

Demanding a salary is a common issue when a fresh graduate applying any job at the
certain company. This issue is one of the reasons of graduates attitude contributes the
number of increasing in unemployment rates in Malaysia. How this issue can
be understood? Nowadays, a thousand fresh graduates revealed every year. Majority of
them have a mindset to have a good job with a good salary. They think that by having a
scroll of education certificate, diploma as an example, they can demand up to RM3,000
for their salary ? It’s impossible to get that salary because a company will accept the
application from fresh graduates with a lower salary. In my opionion, education level is
not a determination of salary. The important is, fresh graduates nowadays need to have
an experience of work before, a good in communication skills, and high level of
interpersonal skills. By having all of this, it’s logic for you to demand your salary from that
company. According to the study from Jobstreet Malaysia found; as much as 68 percent
employers filed complaints that fresh graduates are demanding too much. Major 75
percent graduates were reported to ask for starting salaries of RM2,400 while more than
half graduates asked for salaries of RM3,000 and above. However, Malaysian Employers
Federation (MEF) executive director Shamsuddin Bardan said that those starting
amounts of RM3,000 would be more suitable for those fresh graduates with a master’s
degree. To conclude this point, it shows that demanding a salary by fresh graduates
caused unemployment in Malaysia.

In conclusion, unemployment is not only caused by graduate attitudes which is

fractional unemployment. As I mentioned above, there are still many others causes that
unemployment rates increased. Fresh graduates also need to apply job search skills such
as traditional search skills, telephone cold calling, and walking into companies in order
to seek for a job. Fresh graduates nowadays should prepare with hard skills and soft skills
before they enter into the working life. Hard skills can be learned from the school,
training, or previous working experience. Meanwhile, soft skills are character traits and
interpersonal skills that enable someone to interact effectively and harmoniously with
other people. It’s very essential to have both of these skills before they apply for a
job. Government also need to play a role to overcome the jobless issue among local
graduates by measuring many approaches like fiscal policy and monetary policy.
