Here are the Key Ideas in this module. Below we will use them in the Examples.
•An important example of straight-line motion with constant acceleration is that of an object rising or falling
freely near Earth's surface. The constant-acceleration equations describe this motion, but we make two
changes in notation: (1) we refer the motion to the vertical y axis with +y vertically up; (2) we replace a with

At t = 0, a baseball player tosses a baseball up along a y axis, with an initial speed of 12.0 m/s and then catches
it when it returns to the release level. We place a vertical y axis along the ball's path, with y0 = 0 at the release
level.
We want to calculate (1) the time when the ball is at maximum height, (2) the maximum height, and (3) the two
times when the ball is at height 5.00 m above its release point.
KEY IDEAS
1.Once the ball leaves the pitcher and before it is caught, its acceleration is the free-fall acceleration a = −g.
Because this acceleration is constant, the constant-acceleration equations apply to the motion. Here we will
use the symbol y instead of x, and in the calculations we will substitute −g for a:

2.The velocity v at maximum height is 0. On the way up, the speed decreases and the velocity becomes less
positive, until they are both zero. On the way down, the speed increases and the velocity becomes more
negative.

Assuming that we can neglect the effects of the air, once the ball leaves the blimp and before it is caught, its
acceleration is the free-fall acceleration a = −g. Because this acceleration is constant, the constant-acceleration
equations apply to the motion. Here we will use the symbol y instead of x, and in the calculations we will
substitute −g for a:

Neglecting the effects of air is actually unwarranted in such a long fall. If you included them, you would find
that the fall time was longer and the final speed was smaller than the values calculated here. Still, the speed
must have been considerable, because when Sprinz finally managed to get a ball in his glove (on his fifth
attempt) the impact slammed the glove and hand into his face, fracturing the upper jaw in 12 places, breaking
five teeth, and knocking him unconscious. And he dropped the ball.

Once the can is released, its acceleration is the free-fall acceleration a = −g. Because this acceleration is
constant, the constant-acceleration equations apply to the motion. Here we will use the symbol y instead of x,
and in the calculations we will substitute −g for a:

Calculation, first try. Let's place our usual vertical y axis along the can's path so that we can describe the can's
position, and let's define the ground to be at y = 0. Then when the can moves through the bottom half of its fall,
it moves from y = 2.00 m to y = 0. We want the time t2 required for that motion.
Calculation, second try. Let's use Eq. 2.4.2 twice, once to find the time t1 for the fall through the first half and
then again to find the time tfull for the entire fall.
