TWIST N TURNT

- Screw Fastener
All machines have an innate sense of responsibility.
- Henry Ford.
This comes from the man who revolutionized the production industry, widely regarded as
the father of modern assembly lines and mass production.
We ask you to develop one such machine which will make life in the manufacturing and
production industry easier.
We ask you to come up with a machine which is responsible.
We ask you to come, twist n turn!

Problem Statement :
Design an Unscrewing or unfastening mechanical model to complete the task.

EVENT FORMAT:
The bot has to have a basic mechanism to fasten and unfasten the screw. The arena will hold
screws which have to be unfastened and also nuts to which screws have to be fastened. The
screws may be placed both horizontally as well as vertically. The arena would have screws
placed at different vertical heights, hence the mechanism should be able to unfasten/fasten
them. The complexity of mechanism would score extra design points.

SPECIFICATIONS:
The participant can design a mechanical model within the following dimensions:
Length: 10’
Width: 8’

OTHER DETAILS:
The mechanism has to be completely mechanical. No automation and power supply of any
kind should be provided.
Example of complexity is as shown below by extending the no. of levers in between the
initial rotary motion given by the user to the final motion.
ROUNDS :

FIRST ROUND :
The model has to unfasten four thumb screws with bolts fixed on a steel plate within three
minutes to qualify and top ten teams would go to the next round.

SECOND ROUND :
 In this round the model has to unfasten variety of screws and finish the puzzle.
 The first phase has two flat machine head screws with bolts fixed on a steel
plate.
 The second phase has three wood screws fixed on wood plank of thickness
2.5cm.
 The third phase has two recessed head and machine slotted screws fixed on steel
plate.
 The fourth phase has one hex screw fixed on a wood plank.
 The final phase has four screws which is fixed in the vertical plate.
JUDGING CRITERIA:

K = ((A+B+C+D)/60) + ((D1+D2)/30)
 A – Time taken to complete I phase
 B – Time taken to complete II phase
 C – Time taken to complete III phase
 D – Time taken to complete IV phase
 D1 – Time taken to complete IV phase – 1st floor
 D2 – Time taken to complete IV phase – Ground floor
Lesser the K, higher is his rake in winning
The no. of joints also contributes to the rake.

RULES
1. Two tries to unfasten a screw would be given and the best time would be taken.
2. There is no case of half finish or irregular finish. The time calculated is noted only if
the screw is unfastened/fastened totally.
3. In case of a tie a tie breaker shall be initiated between the respective teams.
4. The judge’s decision will be final and binding.

FAQ’S:
1.Who is eligible to participate?
Any student studying engineering or science group is eligible to participate.
2.Do I need to submit any written document for the event?
No, register yourself, make the model and start screwing up...
