 List at least five (5) things to make grammar test increase student’s motivation.

The five (5) things to make grammar test increase student’s motivation are Gap
filling, Multiple choice test, Transformation, Clause Combining, and Making up
sentences from the given words.

Gap filling (initial form given or a choice of forms offered), this is easy to make-
up and check, develops automatisms. Multiple choice test (choosing a morphological
form, syntactic structure or word order), this is easy to check and develops
automatisms. Transformation (person, number, tense, voice, mood, degrees of
compassion, statement – question), this is easy to make up, develops both
automatisms and cognitive skills. Clause combining (accompanied or not accompanied
by transformation), this is easy to make up and check, develops speaking/writing
strategies. And lastly, Making up sentences from the given words (accompanied or not
accompanied by grammatical transformation), this is easy to make up and check, and
also develops speaking/writing strategies. These five things will surely increase
student’s motivation in making grammar test because in each and every students view,
it is easy to fulfill and understand.

 List at least five (5) things you should never do to make grammar test non-
threatening
The five (5) things that I should never do to make grammar test non-threatening
are Error identification, Error correction, Choosing or independent sentence
interpretation, based on the grammatical form/structure, Text-based gap filling, and
Grammatical games.

Error identification, it is mechanical, a high probability to guess the correct


answer by chance, may cause error fossilization and dull, uncommunicative, difficult
and often confusing. Error correction, it also may cause error fossilization and it is too
difficult, often the meaning of the sentence, due to the error, and it is obscure.
Choosing or independent sentence interpretation, based on the grammatical
form/structure (while listening or reading), it is difficult to make up, the choosing is
mechanical, there is a high probability to guess the correct answer by chance,
independent interpretation is difficult to assess, and it demands high level of analytic
skills. Text-based gap filling (and probably the situation is described), it is difficult to
find authentic texts containing many target forms. And lastly, Grammatical games, in
this case, students may not concentrate attention on grammar. These five things that
were mentioned should never do to make grammar test non-threatening.
