Canada students have to bring with them visa form which is available in our website www.windsor.edu in
student downloads along with required attachments. This is required for obtaining student visa. For all
other international students they have to send passport with visa form and other requirements to st kitts
before coming. For more information and guide lines please call st kitts office 610 871 0049 or email to

Time Zone:
St. Kitts and Nevis follow Atlantic Standard Time. The islands are 4 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time
(GMT), or 4 hours behind London and Paris, 13 hours behind Tokyo, 14 hours behind Sydney, 1 hour
behind Sao Paulo and 1 hour ahead of New York and Montreal.

Business Hours:
Banking hours are 8 AM-3 PM Monday-Thursday, 8 AM-5 PM Friday, and 8:30-11 AM Saturday. Shopping
hours are generally 8 AM-4 PM Monday- Saturday (some shops close early on Thursday).

There are several duty-free shops on the islands, selling a range of goods including perfumes, textiles,
clothing, porcelain, crystal, and jewelry. Prices tend to be even lower than the duty-free prices on other
Caribbean islands.

Driving:
If you plan on driving in St. Kitts or Nevis, you will need a local temporary driver's license, which can be
obtained from the Police Traffic Department by presenting a national driver's license or international driving
permit and a fee of EC$30. The license is valid for a year.
Phones:Cable & Wireless serves 17, 000 telephone lines in St. Kitts & Nevis. Direct Dialing, Leased
Circuits, Internet, Class Services, Voice Mail, Caller ID and other features are currently offered. ISDN and
DSL services are also available. The area code for St. Kitts is 869.

Electricity:The domestic market is served by a 230-volt single-phase supply. However, a 117-volt supply is
available in most hotels.

Water:The water is of good quality and suitable for drinking. It is collected from direct precipitation, mountain
springs and wells, and is chemically treated for purification. Locally bottled water is also available.
Health:There are no particular health concerns associated with St. Kitts. Therefore special vaccines are
usually not required. Modern ambulatory services are available and there are specialists in most fields of
medicine. A state of the art hospital is currently under construction and emergency 911 services are
available
All students are expected to have their own student health Insurance. St Kitts has all
Health care facilities with both in patient and Outpatient services

Clothing:Jeans, shorts, shirts and T-shirts are standard wear here. Temperature ranges from 30-37
degrees centigrade. Cotton shirts, trousers, etc get what you feel comfortable in. We have intermittent rains
here so it is advisable to bring a raincoat and an umbrella along.

Footwear: Sneakers, good formal leather shoes, sandals, again depending upon what you feel comfortable
in.
Linen: 2 single bed size bed sheets, a couple of pillow covers and a light blanket (the blanket can be left if
space or weight is a consideration). Do not get too much of linins.
Cosmetics: Tooth and paste, comb/brush, twin blade based shaving kit, nail cutter, sunscreen lotion,
lipsticks, powders make up kit, etc. Shampoos and deodorants can be purchased here but are a little bit
expensive.
Medicines: Your favorite medicines for minor ailments like fever, cold, cough, stomach- ache, etc and any
other personal medication, antiseptic cream. If you need corrective vision bring 2 to 4 spare pairs of glasses
or contact lenses as the case might be, is strongly recommended. A doctor’s prescription is required to buy
spectacles and contact lenses here, and the Doctor’s fees are exorbitant and the insurance does not cover
the eyesight. So get your eyes checked before leaving.
Get a complete medical check- up before you leave.
Utensils: Almost all graduate students cook in their apartment, therefore you would need all the basic stuff
for cooking. There is a lot of non-stick cookware available here. Consider getting whatever you feel required.
Foodstuffs: Spices
Others: For entertainment you could bring a mini tape recorder, CD player or whatever you feel convenient
Domestic voltage supply here in ST Kitts is 110 V, 60Hz and 220V, 50Hz. So sometimes you may require a
converter for your shaver, flow drier (hair drier).
In summary we would recommend that you concentrate on your choice of books,
clothing and some utensils. However please remember that these are only suggestions to help you make
informed decisions on your packing. In the end trust your mom’s (and your own) judgment and
commonsense.
Religion:The predominant religion is the Christian faith. However, there are small Rastafarian, Muslim and
other communities.

WEATHER: Sunny days and cool nights are terms used to describe the weather in St. Kitts. The climate is
tropical. Temperatures average 81 degrees Fahrenheit (27 degrees Celsius) with steady, cooling breezes
throughout most of the year. There is no Rainy season as such. Average annual rainfall is 58 inches.

GETTING AROUND AND AIRLINES:Travel to St Kitts is very easy. Almost all-major airlines fly to
Puerto Rico, which is a hub for all the destinations in the Caribbean. Major Airlines fly out of Miami, New
York, Toronto, Fort Lauderdale, Baltimore, Chicago and Washington DC to Puerto Rico. From Puerto Rico
American Airlines goes into St Kitts and is only 40 minutes flight.

Airlines like American, Spirit, Pan-American will offer good price to Puerto Rico from USA.

Canada Students only - on sharing basis and subject to availability. Students have to bear the charges for
utilities like water, electricity, phone etc.,
In general, the students stay by sharing an apartment with fellow students. There are quite a few university
approved housing facilities. Check with the administration regarding your accommodation. Students have to
bear the charges of utilities like water, cooking gas and electricity.

In general, the rent of a 2 bedroom apartment is around US$ 700- US$1000 per month. Efficiencies, which
are meant for single person, range around US$300.

For housing you would be required to pay an initial deposit (1

months rent at least) in advance. Plus you would have initial
expenses in settling down. This can all add up to US$700-
US$1000 and minimal safe amount to bring is about US$1000 to
US$2000. Traveler’s checks and personal drafts are easy to use
and should cause no problems at all.

ANATOMY COURSE WORK CAN BE DONE AT ST KITTS OR ASSOCIATED UNITED STATES MEDICAL
SCHOOL

1. BOOKS AND INSTRUMENT LIST:

Textbooks are really expensive here and may not get them immediately. So buy all books that
you think you need to study here. Get all general reference books (Board revive series, national
medical series), (All us and Canada students coming under us fee structure need not buy books
as Windsor will provide required books while studying at the campus.)
Optional: - cookbooks, medical dictionary etc.
Books unfortunately will also be the heaviest part of your luggage, so choose wisely.
[WUSM, ST.Kitts have pretty good library with all required reference books, library is open till
2300hrs during weekdays so can consider studying at library]
