1. Wet leather with 15 % wt H2O is dried to 7 % wt H2O under the following conditions: Fresh air is mixed
with recycled air and is blown over the solid. The fresh air contains 0.01 lb H 2O per lb dry air and the
recycled air, which is part of the air leaving the drier, contains 0.1 lb H2O per lb air. The proportions of
fresh and recycled air are adjusted so that the mixture entering the drier contains 0.03 lb H 2O per lb air.
Starting with 100 lbs of wet leather, calculate the following
a) How many pounds of water are removed from the wet leather?
b) How many pounds of dried leather were produced from the drier?
c) Copy the table in your answer sheet. Show your complete solution.

2. Blue vitriol, CuSO4·5H2O (249.55 g/mol), is obtained from an evaporator-crystallizer-drier process from an
aqueous solution of this salt. The fresh feed (F) to the process contains 15% wt CuSO4. A fraction of the
mother liquor produced from the crystallizer (R) is recycled to join the fresh feed while the wet crop (WC)
contains blue vitriol and some adhering solution. The fresh feed (F) and the recycled (R) solution from the
crystallizer are mixed to form the feed to the evaporator (M) containing 14% wt CuSO 4. This mixture is
then concentrated by removing some of the solvent (W1) thus producing a thick liquor (T) containing 20%
wt CuSO4. This thick liquor from the evaporator is then fed to the crystallizer operating at 0C. The wet
crop (WC) from the crystallizer is finally sent to a drier to remove some adsorbed moisture (W2) and obtain
blue vitriol (P). The solubility of the CuSO4 (159.55 g/mol) at 0C is 12 kg in 100 kg solution. Determine
the following:
a) Draw and label completely the process diagram described
b) Weight of blue vitriol, CuSO45H2O (P) obtained from 100 kg of the fresh feed (F)
c) Weight of solution fed to the evaporator (M) and the recycle stream (R)
d) Amount of water in kilogram removed in the evaporator (W1)
e) Kilogram of blue vitriol per kilogram of adhering solution in the wet crop (WC)
Express answers in two (2) decimal places.

3. (NH4)2C2O4 is soluble to the extent of 4.4 kg per 100 kg of water. A slurry containing 20 kg of salt in 100
kg of water was filtered. Ninety-seven kg of filtrate is collected and the wet filter cake is dried to form
anhydrous salt. Calculate the amount of water evaporated from the cake and anhydrous salt formed.
Express answers in two (2) decimal places.
4. The air in a room is at 37.8°C and total pressure of 101.3 kPa abs containing water vapor with a dew point
temperature of 81°F. Using Form 2 of the Antoine Equation calculate:
a) Molal humidity
b) Absolute humidity
c) Percentage humidity
d) Relative humidity
Express answers in two (2) decimal places
5. To feel comfortable, the air inside buildings must not only be at a proper temperature but also have the
humidity level properly adjusted. The usual procedure is to take outside air and reduce its temperature in a
chiller to condense some of the water vapor so that the desired humidity level is reached then increase the
temperature in a heater, with no change in the absolute humidity, to the desired temperature level. If the
outside air is at 35°C, 1 atm (absolute) and 85% relative humidity and you desire to provide air to the inside
of the building at 22°C, 1 atm (absolute), and 30% relative humidity,
a) What should the temperature of the air be leaving the chiller in order to obtain the proper
humidity level? (Assume that the air leaving the cooling unit is in equilibrium with the water
that is condensed out of the air stream.)
b) What fraction of the water in the outside air is removed in order to obtain the desired humidity
level?
Express answers in two (2) decimal places
6. An absorption-distillation two-unit process as shown in the diagram below is used to recover acetone from
an acetone-air mixture (gas). In the absorber column, acetone in the gas mixture is absorbed by water which
flows downward. The water-acetone mixture (liquid) from the absorber is then fed to the distillation
column to separate acetone and water. All the concentrations shown in the diagram are % wt. Determine
the flow rates (kg/hr) of W, A, F, B and D if G = 48 kmol/h. Express answers in two (2) decimal places.
