B1425-2A-REMOTE RADIO SWITCH INPUT - STUCK

For a complete wiring diagram, refer to appropriate SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article .

THEORY OF OPERATION

The Remote Radio Switches are hardwired to the Right Steering Wheel Control Switch (Speed Control Switch).
The Right Steering Wheel Control Switch (Speed Control Switch) transmits Remote Radio Switch information
to the Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) (integral to the Steering Column Control Module) via the LIN Bus. The
SAS then converts this data to a CAN Bus signal and broadcasts the message to the corresponding module on
the bus.

WHEN MONITORED

Continuously with the ignition on.

SET CONDITION

The Steering Column Control Module senses that the Remote Radio Switches are in the Set position for greater
than 600 seconds.

POSSIBLE CAUSES

Possible Causes
STUCK REMOTE RADIO SWITCH

DIAGNOSTIC TEST

1. CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC

NOTE: Before proceeding with the diagnostic procedure, verify that the
connections are properly made, seated and verify proper pin terminal
tension. A loose connection at any of the SCCM connectors may cause the
DTC to set.

1. Turn the ignition on.


2. Press each Remote Radio Switch twice.
3. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

Does the scan tool display this DTC as active?

Yes

Go To 2

No

time. Using the wiring diagrams as a guide, check all related splices and connectors for signs
of water intrusion, corrosion, pushed out or bent terminals, and correct pin tension.
Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
2. LEFT OR RIGHT REMOTE RADIO SWITCH

NOTE: Check for a stuck Remote Radio Switch. Repair as necessary.

1. With the scan tool, view the switch status. Status can be viewed in the SCCM data display.

NOTE: With the switches not pressed, the value for the remote switches
should read "Released".

NOTE: Visually and physically inspect the wiring harness between the
Remote Radio Switch harness connectors and the Right Steering
Wheel Switch (Speed Control Switch) harness connector. Repair any
damaged wires, connectors, and open/spread terminals. If harness is
OK, proceed with test.

Replace the Remote Radio Switch that does not display the correct value in the data display.
Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .

B1504-2A-LEFT STEERING WHEEL CONTROL SWITCH - STUCK

For a complete wiring diagram, refer to appropriate SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article .

THEORY OF OPERATION

The Left Steering Wheel Control Switch is used to control the Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) in
the Cluster. The switch is hardwired to the Right Steering Wheel Control Switch (Speed Control Switch). The
Right Steering Wheel Control Switch (Speed Control Switch) transmits Left Steering Wheel Control Switch
information to the Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) (integral to the Steering Column Control Module) via the LIN
Bus. The SAS then converts this data to a CAN Bus signal and broadcasts the message to the corresponding
module on the bus.

WHEN MONITORED

Continuously with the ignition on.

SET CONDITION

The Steering Column Control Module (SCCM) senses that the Left Steering Wheel Control Switch is in the Set
position for greater than 20 seconds. Phone related switches have a set time of 600 seconds.

POSSIBLE CAUSES

CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC

NOTE: Before proceeding with the diagnostic procedure, verify that the connections

NOTE: Check for a stuck Left Steering Wheel Control Switch.

2. Press each switch on the Left Steering Wheel Switch assembly twice. (The scan tool can be used to
monitor switch status. Status can be viewed in the SCCM data display.)
3. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

Does the scan tool display this DTC as active?

Yes

WARNING: Turn the ignition off disconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two
minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may
result in possible serious or fatal injury.

WARNING: Do not place an intact non-deployed airbag face down on a hard


surface, the airbag propels into the air if accidentally deployed.
Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or
fatal injury.

NOTE: Visually and physically inspect the wiring harness between the Left
Steering Wheel Control Switch harness connector and the Right Steering
Wheel Control Switch (Speed Control Switch) harness connector. Repair
any damaged wires, connectors, and open/spread terminals. If harness is
OK, proceed with test.

Replace the Left Steering Wheel Control Switch in accordance with the Service Information. Refer
to SWITCH, EVIC CONTROL, REMOVAL .
Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .

THEORY OF OPERATION

The Wiper/Washer Switch is integral to the Multifunction Switch. The Multifunction Switch is connected to the
left side of the Clockspring/SAS. The Multifunction switch provides the primary controls for the front
wiper/rear wiper/washer systems, turn signals and for headlamp high beam selection. The Multifunction Switch

communicates with the Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) (integral to the Steering Column Control Module) via the
LIN Bus. The SAS then converts this data to a CAN Bus signal and broadcasts the message to the
corresponding module on the bus. Refer to SWITCH, MULTIFUNCTION, OPERATION .

WHEN MONITORED

With the ignition on.

SET CONDITION

The Steering Column Control Module (SCCM) detects the Washer Switch is active for greater than 20 seconds.

NOTE: Before proceeding with the diagnostic procedure, verify that the connections

1. Turn the ignition on.


2. Actuate the Front Washer Switch twice. (The scan tool can be used to monitor switch status. Status can be
viewed in the SCCM data display.)
3. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

Does the scan tool display this DTC as active?

Yes

Replace the Multifunction Switch in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to SWITCH,
MULTIFUNCTION, REMOVAL .
Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .

No

B232E-00-REAR WASHER SWITCH - STUCK

THEORY OF OPERATION

The Wiper/Washer Switch is integral to the Multifunction Switch. The Multifunction Switch is connected to the
left side of the Clockspring/SAS. The Multifunction switch provides the primary controls for the front
wiper/rear wiper/washer systems, turn signals and for headlamp high beam selection. The Multifunction Switch
communicates with the Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) (integral to the Steering Column Control Module) via the
LIN Bus. The SAS then converts this data to a CAN Bus signal and broadcasts the message to the
corresponding module on the bus. Refer to SWITCH, MULTIFUNCTION, OPERATION .

WHEN MONITORED

With the ignition on.

SET CONDITION

The Steering Column Control Module (SCCM) detects the Rear Washer Switch is active for greater than 20
seconds.

POSSIBLE CAUSES

Possible Causes
MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH

DIAGNOSTIC TEST

CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC

NOTE: Before proceeding with the diagnostic procedure, verify that the connections
are properly made, seated and verify proper pin terminal tension. A loose
connection at any of the SCCM connectors may cause the DTC to set.

1. Turn the ignition on.


2. Actuate the Rear Washer Switch twice. (The scan tool can be used to monitor switch status. Status can be
viewed in the SCCM data display.)
3. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

Does the scan tool display this DTC as active?

Yes

Replace the Multifunction Switch in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to SWITCH,
MULTIFUNCTION, REMOVAL .

THEORY OF OPERATION

The Horn Switch is hardwired to the Right Steering Wheel Control Switch (Speed Control Switch). The Right
Steering Wheel Control Switch (Speed Control Switch) transmits Horn Switch information to the Steering
Angle Sensor (SAS) (integral to the Steering Column Control Module) via the LIN Bus. The SAS then converts
this data to a CAN Bus signal and broadcasts the message to the corresponding module on the bus.

WHEN MONITORED

Continuously with the ignition on.

SET CONDITION

The Steering Column Control Module (SCCM) senses that the Horn Switch is pressed for greater than 45
seconds.

POSSIBLE CAUSES

Possible Causes
HORN SWITCH
RIGHT STEERING WHEEL SWITCH (SPEED CONTROL SWITCH)

DIAGNOSTIC TEST

CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC

NOTE: Before proceeding with the diagnostic procedure, verify that the connections
are properly made, seated and verify proper pin terminal tension. A loose
connection at any of the SCCM connectors may cause the DTC to set.

1. Turn the ignition on.


2. Press the Horn Switch twice. (The scan tool can be used to monitor switch status. Status can be viewed in
the SCCM data display.)

Does the scan tool display this DTC as active?

Yes

Replace the Horn Switch in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to SWITCH, HORN,
REMOVAL . Once the switch has been replaced, press it twice to initialize it. If problem still
persists, replace the Right Steering Wheel Switch (Speed Control Switch) in accordance with the
Service Information. Refer to SWITCH, SPEED CONTROL, REMOVAL .
Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .

The Flash to Pass/Optical Horn Switch for this vehicle is integral to the Multifunction Switch. The
Multifunction Switch is connected to the left side of the Clockspring/SAS. The Multifunction switch provides
the primary controls for the front and rear wiper and washer systems, turn signals and for headlamp high beam
selection. The Multifunction Switch communicates with the Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) (integral to the

(SAS) has been installed incorrectly, this DTC may set. Refer to the appropriate

Control Functions are resistor multiplexed and are hard wired inputs to the Steering Angle Sensor (SAS)
microprocessor. The switch also contains the circuitry of a Local Interface Network (LIN) slave node, which
provides source current for and communicates the switch or sensor states of the Electronic Vehicle Information
Center (EVIC) switches, the remote radio switches and the horn switch over the LIN data bus to the SAS, which
is also the LIN master node and a gateway to the Controller Area Network (CAN) data bus. Refer to SWITCH,
SPEED CONTROL, OPERATION .

provides source current for and communicates the switch or sensor states of the Electronic Vehicle Information
Center (EVIC) switches, the remote radio switches and the horn switch over the LIN data bus to the SAS, which

connectors, and open/spread terminals. If harness is OK, proceed
with test.

3. Turn the ignition on.


4. Measure the voltage of the (V71) S/C Switch Sense 1 circuit at the Right Steering Wheel Switch
(Speed Control Switch) harness connector.

Is the voltage present?

Yes

If battery voltage is present, repair the (V71) S/C Switch Sense 1 circuit for a short to
voltage.
If the voltage present is approximately 5.0 volts, Go To 6

No

Go To 3

connectors, and open/spread terminals. If harness is OK, proceed

4. Measure the voltage of the (V72) S/C Switch Sense 2 circuit at the Right Steering Wheel Switch
(Speed Control Switch) harness connector.

Is the voltage present?

Yes

If battery voltage is present, repair the (V72) S/C Switch Sense 2 circuit for a short to
voltage.
If the voltage present is approximately 5.0 volts, Go To 6

No

Go To 3
3. (V72) S/C SWITCH SENSE 2 CIRCUIT OPEN IN THE STEERING WHEEL HARNESS
1. Turn the ignition off.
2. Disconnect the SCM C6 harness connector.
3. Measure the resistance of the (V72) S/C Switch Sense 2 circuit between the Right Steering Wheel
Switch (Speed Control Switch) and SCM C6 harness connectors.

Is the resistance above 5.0 Ohms?

Yes

Repair the open in the (V72) S/C Switch Sense 2 circuit.


Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .

No

THEORY OF OPERATION

The Right Steering Wheel Control Switch (Speed Control Switch) includes the cruise control functions. Cruise
Control Functions are resistor multiplexed and are hard wired inputs to the Steering Angle Sensor (SAS)
microprocessor. The switch also contains the circuitry of a Local Interface Network (LIN) slave node, which
provides source current for and communicates the switch or sensor states of the Electronic Vehicle Information
Center (EVIC) switches, the remote radio switches and the horn switch over the LIN data bus to the SAS, which
is also the LIN master node and a gateway to the Controller Area Network (CAN) data bus. Refer to SWITCH,
SPEED CONTROL, OPERATION .

WHEN MONITORED

Continuously with the ignition on.

SET CONDITION

Fault signifies any Speed Control Switch is held/stuck for greater than 120 seconds.

Repair the open or short to ground on the (D507) LIN Bus circuit.
Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
7. CHECK THE VOLTAGE OF (A929) FUSED B (+) CIRCUIT AT THE RIGHT STEERING
WHEEL SWITCH (SPEED CONTROL SWITCH)
1. Measure the voltage of the (A929) Fused B (+) circuit at the Right Steering Wheel Switch (Speed
Control Switch) harness connector.

Is battery voltage present?

Yes

8. (A929) FUSED B (+) CIRCUIT OPEN BETWEEN THE RIGHT STEERING WHEEL SWITCH
(SPEED CONTROL SWITCH) AND CLOCKSPRING
1. Turn the ignition off.
2. Disconnect the SCM C6 harness connector.
3. Measure the resistance of the (A929) Fused B (+) circuit between the Right Steering Wheel Switch
(Speed Control Switch) and SCM C6 harness connectors.

Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms?

Yes

Go To 9

No

Repair the open in the (A929) Fused B (+) circuit.


Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
9. (A929) FUSED B (+) CIRCUIT SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN THE RIGHT STEERING
WHEEL SWITCH (SPEED CONTROL SWITCH) AND CLOCKSPRING
1. Measure the resistance between ground and the (A929) Fused B (+) circuit at the Right Steering
Wheel Switch (Speed Control Switch) harness connector.

Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms?

Yes

Repair the short to ground on the (A929) Fused B (+) circuit.


Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .

No

Go To 10
10. (A929) FUSED B (+) CIRCUIT OPEN BETWEEN THE CLOCKSPRING AND PDC
1. Turn the ignition off.
2. Disconnect the SCM C2 harness connector.
3. Turn the ignition on.
4. Measure the voltage of the (A929) Fused B (+) circuit at the SCM C2 harness connectors.

Yes

hard surface, the airbag propels into the air if accidentally
deployed. Failure to follow these instructions may result in
possible serious or fatal injury.

Replace the Clockspring in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to


CLOCKSPRING, REMOVAL .
Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .

No

Repair the open or short to ground on the (A929) Fused B (+) circuit.
Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
11. CHECK THE GROUND CIRCUIT AT THE RIGHT STEERING WHEEL SWITCH (SPEED
CONTROL SWITCH)
1. Turn the ignition off.
2. Measure the resistance between ground and the Ground circuit at the Right Steering Wheel Switch
(Speed Control Switch) harness connector.

Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms?

Yes

Replace the Right Steering Wheel Switch (Speed Control Switch) in accordance with the
Service Information. Refer to SWITCH, SPEED CONTROL, REMOVAL .
Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .

No

Go To 12
12. GROUND CIRCUIT OPEN BETWEEN THE RIGHT STEERING WHEEL SWITCH (SPEED
CONTROL SWITCH) AND CLOCKSPRING
1. Disconnect the SCM C6 harness connector.
2. Measure the resistance of the Ground circuit between the Right Steering Wheel Switch (Speed
Control Switch) and SCM C6 harness connectors.

Yes

Go To 13

No

Repair the open in the Ground circuit.

1. Disconnect the SCM C2 harness connector.
2. Measure the resistance between ground and the Ground circuit at the SCM C2 harness connector.

Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms?

Yes
