UNIT-I
1. a) Describe Michelson Interferometer with necessary theory 8
b) Michelson and Morley conducted experiments to detect ether.
The data of their interferometer experiments are as given below:
The distance between the partially reflecting mirror and either
of the two fully reflecting mirrors, d = 11 m.
The wavelength of the light,   5.9 107 m
The orbital speed of the Earth, u = 10-4c
Where c is the speed of light in free space
Find the expected maximum fringe shift when the interferometer
is rotated through 90o 4
