ACTIVITY & ASSIGNMENT 1

Search the answers the following questions:

1. What are the importance of research according to Creswell?

According to Creswell (2012) “research is important for three reasons. Firstly, research
adds to our knowledge. He postulated that “educators undertake research to contribute to existing
information about issues.”(ibid). Secondly, research improves practice. According to Creswell
(2012), “[researchers,] teachers and other educators become more effective professionals”.
Lastly, research informs policy debates. The product of this endeavor, “provides information to
policy makers when they research and debate educational topics.”

Creswell, John W. (2012). Educational research planning, conducting, and evaluating

quantitative and qualitative research. 4th ed. New Jersey: Pearson Prentice Hall.

2. Briefly explain the etymology of research.

Research came “from Old French recercher "seek out, search closely," from re-, intensive
prefix (see re-), + cercher "to seek for," from Latin circare "go about, wander, traverse," in Late
Latin "to wander hither and thither," from circus "circle" (see circus)”

3. Define research according to the following:

a) Chrissie Oldfield

In her article entitled: “Another look at research,” Oldfield (2015) postulated that
research is to develop new knowledge which comprises studious investigation and a quest for
new theories in order to contribute to a current academic wealth of knowledge.

Oldfield, C. (2015). Another look at research. Teaching Public Administration,

34(1), 40–53. https://doi.org/10.1177/0144739415597971

b) Robert Burns
c) Frederick Kerlinger

According to Kerlinger (1973). “Research is a systematic controlled, empirical and

critical investigation of hypothetical propositions about the presumed relations among natural
phenomena.”

Kelinger, F. (1973) as cited from Mchuchuri, I. Meaning of research according to various

scholars/ Authors. http://learningtz.blogspot.com/2017/03/meaning-of-research-according-
to.html.

4. What is the essence of research?

According to James Hayton (2015) “The essence of academic research is not just to push the
boundaries of knowledge, but to break free from limiting personal beliefs about the way things
should be.”

Hayton, J. (2015, November 10). The essence of academic research: James Hayton's PhD
advice website. James Hayton, PhD. https://jameshaytonphd.com/quick-tips/the-
essence-of-academic-research.

5. What are the characteristics of research?

Excellent research works have some characteristics in common. And these are some of
them. First, Research must is based on direct experience or observation by the researcher, in
other words, Empirical. Second, research is based on valid procedures and principles, and so
must be Logical. Third, research is a Cyclical process because it starts with a problem and ends
with a problem. Fourth, research utilizes proven analytical procedures in gathering the data,
whether historical, descriptive, experimental and case study, therefore, Analytical. Fifth,
research exhibits careful and precise judgment and be Critical. Sixth Research is conducted in a
Methodical manner without bias using systematic method and procedures. Seventh, research
design and procedures are Replicable or repeated to enable the researcher to arrive at valid and
conclusive results.

ASSIGNMENT 1
Formulate your own definition of research in a single paragraph. Support your definition
with a brief explanation of the major concepts used in the definition.

Research is a scientific and systematic study of data gathered that aims at expounding
existing knowledge, giving solutions to problems, discovering modern innovations that are
geared towards improvement of life.
In this definition, research is identified as an academic and systematic study, for
researchers follow through a distinct set of steps in their undertaking. These steps were identified
as the “scientific method” of inquiry (Kerlinger, 1972, as cited from Creswell (2012)).
Furthermore, data is an important part of research. Since the aim of any research is to test
hypotheses, then data must be collected. Once acquired, these data must be examined. Once
examined, data must be reported. The product of this research will help greatly with expounding
existing knowledge (Creswell, 2012); give solutions to problems (Waltz and Bausell, 1981; cited
from Zazzy, 2015); discovering innovations that leads to improvement of life.
