Spring 2020: Assignment 3
Date: 04-02-2020 Date of Submission: 11-02-2020
Part – A: Hardcopy

1. Explain Short column effect? Explain it by taking one real example. [5]
2. Why bottom mass of the structure is not considered in seismic weight calculation? [5]
3. Explain the response reduction factor in detail. [10]
4. Perform Equivalent static analysis for the (G+4) RC residential building in Hyderabad as
shown in figure 1. Assume slab thickness as 150 mm, floor to floor height as 3.5 m,
column size as 350 x 350 mm, beam size as 230 x 300 mm and wall thickness as 230
mm. Material used for building are M25 grade of concrete and Fe 415 grade of steel.
Assume appropriate floor finishes and imposed load based on IS 875. State any
additional assumption clearly, (if any). [20]

5. Eccentricity and Torsion in a building
a. Find out the design eccentricity for any one floor for building mentioned in
question 4, if one of the slab panel has higher functional load (LL=4 kN/m2) as
shown in below figure 2. [5]

Figure 2: Plan with different LL in a particular slab

b. Also compute the additional forces on each frame for any one floor for Qi_x
based on Q4 and Q5.a. [5]
6. Consider Frame ‘C’ from Q4 (figure 1) and draw the bending moment and shear force
diagram using portal frame method. [10]

Part – B: Moodle

7. For a given SAP model applied all possible load combination for regular building with
uniform plan. Find out the demand in one beam and one column as per the format
given below. [10]
