Based on what I have read in 1896 Philippines: Racial Context of the Revolution, there
were a lot of racial and social classes in the population of the Philippines before and these are the
indios, mestizos, insulares, peninsulares and many more. Throughout the historical experience
during the late part of 19th century, the natives finally see themselves as Filipinos. It was the start
that the people in Philippine archipelago didn’t see Spain as their mother country which also began
the Philippine revolution. These revolutions were established by the different localities though,
they were only a small of size and was suppressed easily. It became the starting point that the
locals fought against the colonizers who were abusive in their ruling power. Also, during the late
19th century indios ordered that the Philippine representation should be granted in Cortes.

Besides, the revolt from the reformists embarked a threat to the colonial authorities as a
war of independence. At the event of the Cavite Mutiny, many indios and mestizos were
imprisoned which includes the GomBurZa priests when they were set through the court for
involving to rebellious activities and were punished to death. The execution of the friars was a
powerful and a life changing event for many indios including, Jose Rizal. Unknowingly, the
Spanish government changed the lives, the attitudes and the mindset of the people that made the
Philippine archipelago into a one geographical unit. In some extent, the racial discrimination and
social classes were ended and led the people to a common experience and education which enabled
the different groups to unite and communicate with each other. It gave rise to what we called
“nationalism” and it was because of the revolutions that were successful due to the loyalty towards
the country and the grievance experiences under the colonial rule of the Spaniards. Through the
success of the revolutions, the inhabitants of the Philippines emerged to what we called
“Filipinos”. Finally, the Philippines gained independence from Spain and people had seen our
nation as our motherland. Furthermore, it is a person’s national consciousness towards his or her
identity that could make a difference and a change.
