Seminar on
TRT, A Seismic Reflector Tracing System to Estimate Geological
Condition Ahead of the Tunnel Heading
Abstract
Three-dimensional Seismic Reflector Tracing System (TRT) was co-developed by Kajima Corporation and C-
Thru Ground, Inc., which can three-dimensionally predict geological conditions such as faults, fractured zones
and geological boundaries ahead of a tunnel face using reflected seismic waves. Its applicability and accuracy
have been validated by comparing with actual geological conditions confirmed by geologists and/or drill-logging
system. After the survey, TRT can give us a 3-D isometric map of geological structures 100-150m ahead of a
tunnel face and up to 30m around a tunnel alignment. The TRT survey is so quick that it does not much prevent
tunnel excavation.
Kajima has applied TRT to about 100 times since its first introduction in February 1999. A lot of geological
images obtained from TRT have been satisfactorily used to manage the risk caused by encountering unforeseen
geological conditions. TRT has been practically improved since it was first used. It is now equipped with wireless
data acquisition system and non-explosive vibrating system. The seminar presentation will give basic principles,
recent improvements and actual survey results of the system.
Speaker
Mr. Yasuhiro Yokota is currently a Senior Research Engineer of Kajima Technical Research Institute in Japan.
He obtained his Master of Engineering in 2006 at Kobe University. After graduation, he began to work at Kajima
Technical Research Institute. He is responsible for researching the latest technology about rock mechanics and
tunnel engineering and giving technical supports to various tunnel construction sites. In addition, he experienced
a construction of large road NATM tunnel as a technical manager for 2 years. He and his colleagues received the
technical award from Japanese Committee for Rock Mechanics in 2009 for this TRT technology.
