Preface
Thank you for choosing the product of Nanyang RG Petro-machinery (Group) Co. Ltd.
The operation instruction manual is programmed by the engineering technical personnel of
the technical center of the corporation according the product design and service experience
of the oil field.
To ensure the safe and reliable operation of the product, please read the manual and its
auxiliary documents carefully. There are many auxiliary parts for the drilling machine, and
the manual only covers the major ones. For the maintenance of those auxiliary parts that
have not been mentioned in this manual or only briefly introduced in the manual, please
refer to their respective operation manual for their structure, operation, maintenance and
repair, and special attention shall be given to the related items of safety warning.

Important safety statement


Any operation, management, maintenance and repair personnel of the product must know
very well of the relative content of the instruction and abide by the regulation related to
operation, management, maintenance and repair, especially for the content such as safety
warning and attention given by this instruction, as well as common-sense safety regulations
and matters needing attention prompted by national law, regulation, industrial regulation, so
as to avoid human injury and damage of the equipment.
The instruction could not list all safety warning information in details, so any method I is
selected for operation, it must be ensured that it will neither endanger the human safety nor
damage the equipment.
Correct maintenance is the key factor for safe and reliable operation of the product. The
maintenance personnel shall maintain the equipment according to the method introduced in
the instruction manual.
The correct repair of the product and replacement of the components manufactured by
origin factory are key factors for safe and reliable operation of the equipment. The user must
maintain and replace the component within the scope authorized by the manufacturer.
When the user has special requirement for the product, the configuration of the product may
differ from the instruction manual, and the actual configuration of the product shall govern.

Ⅰ、Technical specifications
1.1 Swivel function:
Swivel is one of the important equipment fittings for petroleum & natural gas drilling
and service operation. Its main functions are as fellows:
n Hang the rotary drilling string and support the most or all the weight of drilling
tools.
n Inject high pressure drilling fluid into rotary drilling string.

1.2 Feature:
Swivel is consist of rotary part、fixing part and support part. It is designed and
manufactured in accordance with SY/5210-91 and API Spec.8A.

1.3 Main parameters:


The main parameters of swivel are model、Max. rating load、working load、working
pressure、inner diameter of central pipe etc. As for the detailed parameters, please refer to
the table 1.

Ⅱ、Working principle and structure


Swivel is consists of rotary part, fixed part and support part. Rotary part consists of
central line and tie-in; Fixed part consists of shell, frame, lower bearing cover, gooseneck
and bail; Bearing part consists of main bearing, hold down bearing, alignment bearing, mud
pump seal and engine oil seal etc.(Fig.2)
The bail is connected with box by two bail’s pins; it makes the swivel hung up to the
hook. Main bearing which support all drilling string is fixed in the box, the support and the
alignment bearing are separately installed at upper and lower position of the box, the
anti-collision device is installed at outside, avoid hoisting ring strike the box during drilling
process.
The hold down bearing and two oil seals are installed inside the support, the mud saver
is installed at upon the bearing cover to avoid impurity and mud into inside, the oil ruler is
installed below support frame and upon flange, The air bleeder is installed at oil ruler, when
air pressure is produced inside the box, the air is exhausted from air bleeder automatically.
When the oil pointer is turned out, oil can be filled into swivel box. The goose tube is fixed
at the top of support frame of the flange, the top of goose tube is machined a threaded hole
(Z 3″), It is set up specialized for well logging.
Stem is a hollow part. Upper end is connected to packing, lower end to joint. Support
shoulder sits on the main bearing, support by rack and bearing. Add or reduce adjusting
gaskets between support and upper bearing cap can control stem, avoid it scurrying moving
along axial direction.
Packing (see Fig.2) is installed between stem and goose neck, connect upper end to
stem by upper press cap, lower end to goose neck by lower press cap, form a mud way.
Packing, which uses R-shaped self-sealing seal and quickly assembly & disassembly
structure, is a key sealing part for high-pressure mud. If washing pipe and packing needs to
be replaced because serious wear, only need to get down upper press cap and lower press
cap, no need to dismantle other parts. Replacement can do at will during drilling operation.

Ⅲ、Operation and regulations


Load test and water pressure test for swivel have been performed before the swivel
leaves the factory. No oil in swivel box when delivery.

3.1 The following operation should be done before use:


1. Get down oil-gauge stick, add industrial L-CKD extreme pressure gear oil (ISO 220)
till oil level meets the requirements. Gear oil should be clear.
2. Check the center pipe. The pipe shall be rotated smoothly with a chain tong that has
a one meter long handle.
3. Fill out the lubricant cup with lubricant gun. Inject ZL-3H lithium base grease
(SY1413-80) into each oil cup.
4. Check the packing device’s upper and lower press caps and the joints. Fasten them if
loosed.
5. Screw down the plug of gooseneck to avoid overflow of high pressure mud in course
of drilling.
6. Check each part of the swivel to see if there are factors that affect the overall
performance.

3.2 The following lubrication should be done in course of use:


1. The oil quantity in the swivel box must be checked every shift. The lubricant must be
replaced every 700 hours. The dirty oil in the new or refurbished swivel must be poured
out after the first 200 hours running. Remove the deposit with new oil. Add the clean
L-CKD heavy-duty industrial gear oil to the swivel box.
2. The elevator links pin, packing and the bearings are lubricated with ZL-3H lithium base
grease (SY1413-80) every 8 hours. The packing shall be lubricated with the grease
without the pumping press. The elevator link should be lubricated every 150 hours.

Ⅳ、Maintenance and troubleshooting


4.1 Packing device’s replacement
1.DISMANTLING:
When packing needs to be replaced, the swivel should be erect and stable, hammer
upper packing press cap and lower packing press cap to make their loosened till upper press
cap or lower press cap is aligned with washing pipe. So packing can be pulled out from one
side of support, and washing pipe from the packing box. Dismantle oil cup, and remove the

grease up and get the press ring, separating ring, packing and o-rings from the packing box.
Take out the wash pipe, upper press ring, packing and o seals from the upper press cap.(See
Fig.2 and Fig.3)

2.INSPECTION:
Inspect the lubricating, mud, filth and the wearing of each part. The parts need
replacing if they are worn out.
3.INSTALLATION:
(1) Clean all the parts
(2) Put the packing and the upper press ring into the upper packing device’s press cap
with grease on.
(3) Put the packing, oil cup, separating ring, packing, separating ring, packing and
lower press ring into the packing box with the stated order.
(4) After packing, separating ring, lower press ring are mounted on the packing box,
press washing pipe into packing box from above to below, then install the upper packing
press cap to the washing pipe.
(5) Install the upper and lower o- ring and the clip ring. Put the wash pipe and packing
to the middle of the center and the geese neck. Fasten the upper an lower press caps. Install
the grease cap.

4.2 Bearing’s replacement and maintenance


1.DISMANTLING:
When the bearing needs changing, swivel has to be hung up and make stable first with
a crane. Make the bearing cover of the lower end of the swivel box seated on a support
with hollow center. Loosen the screw and remove the press cover. Pull out the lifting pin
with a M30 x2 stud. The lifting ring can be removed.
Loosen the upper and lower press caps of the packing. Remove the packing unit out.
Remove the mud saver. Loosen the connecting bolt. Remove the swivel frame and bearing
cover. Take out the center pipe. Remove the main bearing, centralizing bearing and the
anti-jumping bearing.
Clean the bearings. Change the bearing if any defects on it are found.
2.INSTALLATION:
Before installation the bearings and other parts need cleaning and double check. The
bearing and seals have to be coated with grease.
(1) Put the seal into the bearing cover.
(2) Put the anti-jumping bearing into the installation hole.

(3) Put the main bearing’s lower support ring, the roller and the support into the swivel
box.
(4) Put the center pipe installed with main bearing’s upper ring support, lower
centralizing bearing’s inner ring support and the anti-jumping bearing’s inner ring support
into the main bearing’s lower ring support. Rotate the center pipe slowly to make sure the
main bearing installed to the position.
(5) Put the outer ring support of the centralizing bearing into the lower end of the
swivel box. Install the bearing cover with the seals in. Fasten the bolts.
(6) Install the frame to the swivel box and fasten the bolts. The differential of the
anti-jumping bearing shall be kept to 0.05mm-0.102mm through adjusting the gaskets’
thickness.

Caution:The bolts shall be coated with sealing glue to prevent the dirty outside and
grease inside from going out or in

3. Inspection and adjustment


Inspection and the adjustment are critical to the swivel service life. The inspection and
the adjustments shall abide by following procedures:
(1) The surface of the main bearing’s upper ring support and the end surface of the
center pipe shall be coincidental. No space shall be left.
⑵ The surface of the anti-bearing’s inner ring support and the end surface of the
center pipe shall be coincidental. No space shall be left.

4.3 Common Troubleshooting

4.4 Check and maintenance periods


The check and maintenance to swivel should according to the check and maintenance
procedure SY/T6357-1998 as well as operation and maintenance criterion SY/T6100-1994
for hoisting equipments.
The periodic check and maintenance should be done to the swivel that is being used
and keep the record.

Ⅴ、Storage and handling


Put swivel on stand when it has not been used for a long time. Apply a coat of Vaseline
on processed surface and add enough grease into oil cup, enough grease for every nipple.
Block up gooseneck pipe internal diameter with wood plug and wrap up tightly with plastic
cloth, match protecting screw cap with short joint.
When handling swivel, lift it up with hoisting ring, pull it on the floor is prohibited.

Caution:the swivel should be conveyed with bail and should not be pulled on the
floor.
